  1. Re:Relevant laws on EB Demands Payment From Victim of Theft · · Score: 3, Interesting
The relevant laws seem to be Chapter 538 of the Florida Statutes.. (they're actually sort of an interesting read.
(2)When the lawful owner recovers stolen property from a secondhand dealer and the person who sold or pledged the stolen property to the secondhand dealer is convicted of theft, a violation of this section, or dealing in stolen property, the court shall order the defendant to make restitution to the secondhand dealer pursuant to s. 775.089.

    - Being that the guy who stole the stuff confessed to the cops, it seems he would have to make restitution to EB.

It doesn't really seem to address the issue of what happens when the stuff is already sold and no longer in posession of the dealer. But it does provide a fill-in-the-blank petition for return of property if the dealer won't return it to you...

Michelle Doganis should find a lawyer (and IANAL, but I play can one on slashdot)
  2. Sequence is an issue on Super Tuesday Not So Super For Electronic Voting · · Score: 2, Insightful

The reason that a sequential transaction log would not be good is that by reviewing the voting logs or observing the machine, someone could then figure out who voted for what.

However an internal log which separated the paper into a bin after each entry would not necessarily be a bad thing (akin to the voter-verified ballot behind plexiglass mentioned elsewhere)

Well, you can buy certain new releases and "Hear it now" (get an electronic delivery of music. You can also get E-Books and E-Documents from Amazon.... This will be interesting in how it affects the various online music-for-download stores..

  6. Applications.. on Cell Phone with Camera = Scanner · · Score: 1
    Another application is Fingerprint Mosaicking.
It has been observed that the reduced contact area offered by solid-state fingerprint sensors do not provide sufficient information (e.g., number of minutiae) for high accuracy user verification. Further, multiple impressions of the same finger acquired by these sensors, may have only a small region of overlap thereby affecting the matching performance of the verification system.
See this paper for some details: A. K. Jain and A. Ross, " Fingerprint Mosaicking", Proc. of IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) , Orlando, Florida, May 13 - 17, 2002.

On the other hand the author, while making a few glaring errors, does a fairly decent job of dumbing down all the tech for the average reader to understand while still getting the gist correct, which is a nice change
I have to agree completely with this; it was reasonably accurate and "dumbed down" enough that even my mom got the fundamental ideas, and we were able to have a (much better than I would have anticipated) discussion on cryptography after she read it.
  8. Piano Humidity Control on The Self-Tuning Guitar · · Score: 1

Well, many pianos already take quite a bit of electricity (and regular watering) to run, as they are outfitted with a Humidty Control System; often this works by having two heating elements, one in the piano, and one below, in a tank of water.
Too much humidty, and the top heating rod gets warm, helping dry the piano. Too little, and the water tank gets heated to help evaporate the water.
The automated piano tuner that works with heat could work in conjunction with a dehumidier system, too.

  12. Re:I got a solution... on What Kind of Tablet PC to Buy? · · Score: 2, Interesting

A notepad and paper are less distraction-inducing. Especially with wireless networks.

I have my own laptop, and I also was given a tablet for a few weeks to test out. I was really glad that I hadn't paid for the tablet, because I found it cumbersome and after a day of showing it off (well, a few days), I barely used it. I continued to use my laptop in seminar classes, for access to information for use in the discussion, as well as taking notes.

My laptop was faster (and it's an old 500Mhz iBook) and more comfortable to use; the graphics-drawing ability of the tablet was highly overrated, and the handwriting recognition was not very good (then again, my handwriting is not too legible).

But overall, I'm still a fan of the pencil and paper.
