Yup, move to New Zealand if you dislike the smug mac character :)

I do believe I've Apple ads on tv ONCE or TWICE over a few years, such as when the iPhone came here (iPhone 3G), I dont even remember what the ad was, but it wasnt a massive thing. In large cities, Apple might have a billboard or two, and maybe skins on buses, but outside of America, I'd be willing to bet that Apple does not market anywhere near as much as people on /. suggest. I am very jealous of the Apple Stores, as I myself am a "fan boi", typing this on a apple keyboard, with apple mouse, Apple Cinema HD Display, PowerMac G5, Airport router..... :)

Just want to make it clear: I hear that Apple is some sort of ultra present company in America? This isnt so in most countries worldwide, Apple is sold based on its apparent quality ("a 5K laptop you have to order? must be special!"/ "Macs are used by A list celebrities, people who live in cardboard boxes use HP/Dell computers, every A list celeb/audio producer/graphic artist/movie producer uses a Mac so they must be good". Often new features are added, many of which I couldnt live without! I see no problem with Apple charging for full updates, 10.5, 10.6, more commonly known under their names "you need to run Tiger for this program". What, you want Apple to instead have "Mac OS 11", OS12, OS13 each year? Sounds pretty stupid.

There are generally fairly large additions of new programs you might fall in love with, as well as general bug fixing and performance increases, basically every new version of OSX will give you a performance boost, even on elderly hardware!

I actually have started buying music from iTunes, in NZ its 1.79 for most songs (like the american 99c songs), our 1.79 is about 1.17 us, so we are basically another 20 american cents more expensive per song. Our iTunes store came online around 2006 or so I think? It seems "recent" and yet far away whenever it were.

I feel guilty stealing music, so I will buy music assuming its a fair price. I dont mind paying basically 2 bucks for a song I cant get out of my head, but I've never bought a full album (about 20 nzd, only 2 dollars or so cheaper than a cd from a cheap store).

I always encode my own cd rips at 320 AAC, I sometimes feel I can notice the difference between that and lower formats, I dont think I've ever felt an honest difference listening to an unlossy copy before, and also it makes a "lag" when you play it back on an iPod etc, the loading times are longer per track? I would guess battery life takes a hit, which when you listen to music for a few hours a day, would add up, it could be majorly annoying on a long trip for example, without power, it DOES happen, imagine being the only one in a group of friends without music (the horror!) "because I can hear the difference between lossless and lossy audio compression...", my friends would say "enjoy your silence loser".

Do you have a good new format that Apple should use on the iTunes store? Apple Lossless is sort of Apple only isnt it, in that only Apple would use it, if Microsoft sold music, they wouldnt use that format. So, Apple should sell .ogg format or something? What would be the absolute best audio quality, to buy and listen to for decades to come? Perhaps if you have a realistic option (good quality AAC) and then something out there (metre wide vinyl records, half a track per side).

Personally, I wish Apple would rip high quality masters into different levels, and people could pick which version they wanted based on space (and possibly battery life) vs sound quality. I use archive.org to host my podcast, and it automatically encodes down (and up!?!?) my AAC files into wave, ogg, VBR mp3 etc, it is quite doable on a large scale apparently. Under my proposed system, if you wanted a higher, or lower copy, then you could redownload it, for free, you would essentially own that song forever, with no need to rebuy. A bit of a pipe dream eh?

The thing at the bottom of OS X is called "the dock", you can keep programs, folders on it, to be opened by being clicked, or else it adds new icons when you open something. I've dragged my Application folder to it, so it works almost exactly like the start bar on a Windows operating system, I click the Application folder and a list of my apps appear, to be scrolled through.

Theres not much "flashy" about OS X, it does have high resolution icons etc, and the 10.5 doc does "reflections", if I drag a window close to the dock it accurately reflects the window above for example. But there are no fireworks etc :)

I cannot stand the Vista start bar, that blue orb thing? That thing makes me angry just looking at it! Also, now looking at XP makes my eyes bleed with the bright blue and green of Luna. I'm so used to OS X which is generally a brushed metal type look, with high quality, high resolution colours for icons and their like. There are no attempts at extravagance !

Not sure what you meant about things minimising, and you can just use Command + Tab to switch applications that are open. Of course, there is Expose which is somewhat uniquely mac, although Vista attempted to one up it. Expose is a godsend, I couldnt live without it. Just hit one button on an Apple keyboard and you can rearrange all open windows etc in many different ways, hold down command etc and it can do many different operations.

Hope you can try OSX sometime.

MS tries to compete on price, they say "the macs too expensive for you!" in their ads, they dont advertise any unique features, Windows Movie Maker vs iMovie, Windows Media Player vs iTunes etc. That sort of admits that the PC is "less", if its only selling point is "cheaper than X" doesnt it? I wouldnt buy an american car even if it were cheaper than a reliable Toyota, which they are not! She paid about $600 american for a 6 month old iPhone, sold exclusively by Vodafone NZ, put her new Telecom XT (other carrier's new GSM network) sim card in...it just works! No hacking needed, most phones worldwide are not locked to a carrier like in the US market.

Have you played around with an iPhone before? If you are dead against an iPhone and love your Blackberry, thats cool, maybe think about an iPod Touch then, you can probably get most of the cool things of the iPhone on that, no GPS tracking your every move, no data plan/carriers to worry about ... :)

Ridiculously Expensive? How much is a new Pearl? And a new iPhone, if you bought them brand new and "unsubsidised" or whatever you might call it where you live. Here in NZ I never see people with BlackBerries, and they often cost more than the iPhone does outright! Checking vodafone NZ here, a brand new out of stock (maybe not on sale here yet?) iPhone 3GS 32GB is ....1320 NZD, a standard Blackberry Bold is 1200, the Pearl (its called the 8110) is 900, so 400 dollars more for a top of the line iPhone, the 32GB most expensive one, than the cheapest, not so new Blackberry. The cheapest iPhone 3G (8GB) is basically 980 NZ. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/iphone/8gb-iphone-3g.jsp

For all the cool features, the sex appeal, the apps, you wouldnt pay an extra 80 NZD (probably about $50 american) for an iPhone? 50 american dollars, my guess, is really not that much money if you really want the iPhone.

If people want to steal iPhones, its because they are so cool! Nobody goes "oh man, lets steal a 30GB brown Zune!" do they? They want something cool! You really consider "mass appeal", "coolness" to be a negative thing?!

As I said, I got an iPhone that never came out in my country, naturally my iPhone thats sitting on the desk in front of me, it wanted to connect to Cingular/AT&T, it was basically saying "hey, cant find AT&T, so emergency calls only". I updated to 3.0 recently and found it did that until re-jailbroken with QuickPWN. It wouldnt do anything but ask me to activate it (to AT&T which I cant do obviously) in different languages on the screen, and it showed "no sim" with my Vodafone NZ sim inside.

Jailbreak it, 20 minutes or so later, and its up and running on Vodafone. Switching carriers for a phone? Thats only in America! Seriously!

Buy an iPhone online, get a secondhand one if you cant find them easily new, although you should be able to, pay "500 bucks" or whatever, and the phone is yours. You can put any sim on it, you could put a sim card from a chinese network in it, anything. Thats what unlocking is, it was part of the Jailbreak that I did, jailbreak and unlock.

If you want an iPhone, really want one, you can get around "no removable battery and waaa I have to change carriers". Just jailbreak and unlock, and try living without multiple batteries, Im sure you can do it :) Good luck Amigo.
