However the only reason to upgrade from XP is to get support for more ram or get trim support for a SDD. Basically the only reason to ever upgrade your OS is to enable new hardware. The applications that run on the OS is what should be kept current.
If you think obsoleting windows xp was hard...I can't imagine what it will take to obsolete windows 7.
Given Apple's recent lackluster announcement, I have a feeling this device will cannibalize Ipad and Ipod touch sales. The only thing the touch has going for it, is the portability. However is that worth the expense?
Ordered mine day one. It has 85% of the functionality of the Ipad at 40% of the cost. Its a trade off I am happy to live with
I continue to use Windows 8 on a Netbook that I have. I do this so microsoft can gain the usage statistics that, instead of bowing to the Metro Design, I just found a way to work around it. When I log in I immediately hit -D. takes me to the desktop, and then I created a shortcut that takes me to folder where the start menu icons are still located. I have effectively trained myself to never use the start menu for anything and to basically acomplish everything with shortcuts. In fact when shuting down the computer I simply hit -I and a side bar scrolls from the right and there is an option to shut the computer down.
I never use the start menu and it is horrible for installing legacy applications. I just dock icons and use desktop shortcuts. If more people do the same, I would think microsoft will get the measurements through the usage statistics that people dont like it and therefore its usage will plummet further.
Look at the front of your meter and read the name plate. It will have a bunch of gibberish like meter class, meter form, service voltages and something called Kh with a number beside it. It will most commonly have a 1.0, 7.2, 14.4, 21.6, or 10.0. This number is representative that each time the disk turns that number of watt hours has been registered. If you meter is solid state there is a test led either on the top of the meter or in the hog nose (but not limited too) that flashes infared when it registers that number of watt hours.
All you need to do is count the pulses or turns of the disk. This tells you in a Wh resolution how much energy you are consuming. This is way better because with that resolution you can record things such as load profile and demand and analyze your energy usage throughout the day.
All you need is a pin diode to detect these pulses.
This is a much much easier solution than messing with image processing and trying to control the lighting on your meter that most likely resides outside in the sunlight. And it allows you to read your meter at night.
slightly off topic.
But does anyone have any benchmark data to show whether Google Desktop is faster than Microsoft Desktop search? My personal experience is that GDS slowed my system to a crawl. I uninstalled and thought about installing Microsoft's Desktop search. It is now on my system , and before i go into a ti raid and uninstall it.... is it any faster?
I am all for improving the environment, but this is only going to come at the cost of public. The power companies are only going to have to install more equipment to filter emissions, in drastic cases they will have to spend lots of capital to implement renewable technologies. This will result in the PUC authorizing a rate increase, because lets face it, This stuff isn't free. In the end, the average joe will pay for higher power.
Since everyone shares the same goal of reducing carbon emissions i doubt anyone will complain/sarcasm
This is just the hardware designer in me, but.... I doubt seriously microsoft is to blame if this patent infringement is legitament. They proball purchased a driver or uprocessor, or some dsp chip that has the mpeg decoding capability. Or they paid IBM to integrate it into the die. The point is, Microsoft probally didnt violate the patent, probally IBM, Analog devices, TI or however supplied the part. This is assuming that MPEG2 decoding is done in hardware. Which i assume is correct because this patent was filed in 1991. I doubt they were decoding MPEG2 in software then.
This goes to show that you shouldnt be able to patent ideas, but root implementations. I shouldnt be able to patent the right click or x in the corner. But things like ASCII, MPEG2, and the way i implement the right click.
no your not the only crazy. I like it too. I think it is a great idea to have all the search results scrollable. It makes searching through tons of pages faster. I actually like it. The hypocrasy of the whole matter is that if google had done it..o slashdot would bow down and worship. But the interesting thing is the maps section although little buggy, is actually much better than google maps. I can see road names of subdivision streets. That beats google maps hands down. At least in my local.
Huge firms: Custom-modified OOo tailored to their needs. (after all, it's open source. You can't modify MSO because you don't have the sources.----------
The only problem is then when a new version of OO is released the firm has to reapply those updates to the new release. This causes uneccesary costs to consultants as they have to update the modifications. Furthermore you are paying for the upkeep of now your island release. Going with a Corporate alternative such as MSoffice. They do this for you. Of course provided that MSoffice meets your needs in the first place.
This is all smoke an mirrors. EU is trying to prop up OSS and European businesses because they dont like the idea that an American Company is the only productive option. I say productive because there are competing products to each microsoft product. But only microsoft..and Apple products seem to result in a productive user. Yes yes before i get flamed, i know linux has its place. But honeslty i have only seen people be productive with Linux in delevoper and server applicaitons. Try and write a wordprocessing document, or do any spreadsheet work. you are flat hosed. Yes..WEbsurfing and email there are some nice solutions. not perfect but nice. Evolution, thunderbird, and firefox all are attractive. However, just try and do basic documentation and other office remedeal tasks linux and oss are just about worthless. I am just not a fan of the Open office suit. I rely heavily on Spreadsheet and wordprocessing applications and Open Office is an imature suit. It has come a long way since its 1.0 days but stil remains to be immature. And this long rant has led me to this point. The reason microsoft is at 90% market share in office and os markets is because of quality. Yes we laugh at blue screens of death and security woes but they amount to nuances. Its not how stable there products are. Its what you can do with them and yes features mater! When a OO advocate trys to convice me that i dont need all the features of MSOffice. Its the same as a carsales man trying to sell me a car with "i dont need a radio or airconditioning..i just need 4 wheels". There is plenty of competition, and choices. But microsoft products allow you to get the most done. As a result, well see a quick influx of alternatives but they will all die out because Microsoft continues to inovate..abiet at a slow pace. But they inovaten non the less.
Now i will sit back and watch the flaming begin because i...gasp... defended an evil american corporation Microsoft on slashdot...what the hell was i thinking.
Freedom of speech is an illusion your audiance gives. You can only freely say what they want to hear or they will string you up denounce you for having opposing views.
I suppose i am going to get flamed, but OO will always be second place, not because of the products quality, but because of its marketing. The average computer user doesnt know what OO is. If you stick it on a store shelf for 5 bucks, next to Microsoft Office then average soccer mom, or college student will be intriqued. Not to mention if its in a Box and comes from a name brand store than it will have a little more prestigue. I think firfox could sweep the market if they did the same thing. The problem is that the idea that software should be free gets in the way. Because to place things in a store, someone has to manufacture it, also the store has to make a profit off it. Yes the interent is great, and you can find both of these products for free. But does the average user no where to find them. Does the average user have any idea what they are? And when looking at the websites for these products, does the average user see anything that makes them scream i must have it and wait it looks like a secure product. Marketing is everything and for open source to become big they have to break away from the idea that the interenet is there only distribution source.
Ok, after about 2 weeks of this i have had about enough. As an Electrical Engineer i am furious that geeks everywhere are irate about power supply issues. Now correct me if i am wrong but isn't it standard practice to give electronic components plenty of ventilation. I mean i knew this when i was little. I use to put clothes on top of my component stero because it was convient. Low and Behold months later the stereo become hot and died. Didnt take a Genius to figure out what the cooling slots were for. Dont all you geeks run zalman coolers on your processors, and create water cooled wind tunnels for your computers! I mean did you expect a 3.2Ghz processor to just consume a measly 100mw ? We shove 500 W power supplies in our computers and still complain about not having enough power. Nvidia and ATI require extra 12V power connectors because they chew so much. yet we didn't go on a suing band wagon when pc's crashed because they overstressed power supplies.
Now about the PSU. yes it shouldn't overheat, but as it is becoming obvious there are various suppliers and other distributors of this psu. Wouldn't it be reasonable to suspect that the design was fine in testing but a batch of bad parts is the cause and not the design itself! You geeks kill me. As soon as something crashes you criticize it because it doesn't run linux or some OSS software. Then you go on a tirade about the design being flawed and if you were the engineer you would have considered such things. As an engineer i have seen products fail hundreds of times not because the design is flawed, but because some part distributor supplied a bad batch of parts. In a power supply it just takes one diode or a bad inductor or even a faulty cap, and then you get motorboating and unstable voltages, and guess what happens when that occurs. Yes you guessed it lots of HEAT! And that assumes if the device even powers on.
Now this doesn't absolve Microsoft from responsibility. They still need to replace the faulty units / or power supplies. However, this doesn't warrant a lawsuit. Especially when the manual warns you to place in a ventilated area. I am sick and tired of companies getting sued because end users are not reading the frickin manual!
I wonder if this can be considered illegal because it causes destruction and harm to a computer network. I mean tall those 9/11 related computer laws have to be good for something.
The basic argument that they are only providing access or links is not entirely a weak argument. There is already case precedent with the Grokster vs RIAA case that Kazaa or whatever can not be held responsible for the actions of its users. If they show that they offer disclaimers and show that there site exists on other reasons as to distribute OSS or Linux or whatever they may get a ruling in there favor. Plus this case based on the letter looks like will be filed in Texas. Not the *AA controlled ninth circuit. It will be a tough case but hey no one knows until they try. they will have fresh judges and maybe they will side with the rights of the user. I think they maybe able to say that people are downloading because they are trying to obtain an archival copy. Since we cant legally copy them to backup why cant we download and get a backup. The user is entitled to that. And Bit torrent is designed to share until you finish the download unless you host the tracker. Bit torrent wasn't intended to be a infringing network. I think some one should stand up just to keep the **AA. If we don't do anything they will just role all over things. Realistically i think there chances are slim to none. But there are arguments to make and case precedent that does side with them a little.
However the only reason to upgrade from XP is to get support for more ram or get trim support for a SDD. Basically the only reason to ever upgrade your OS is to enable new hardware. i it gives you an informational panel and one option is to shut down.

It so bothers me to see the level of work conditions that these people endure. Sent from my Ipad
I guess speech is no longer free.
