Gamers in America (and possibly Europe) have tragically limited tastes in the kinds of games they would like to play.

And the Japanese don't? Considering the most popular games are the RPGS, 90% of which have exactly the same mechanics as Dragon Warrior did 20 years ago, I don't think it's just those stupid gaijin you despise who have limited taste. Ever seen the figures for sales of Western games in Japan?

I've got political friends who've had their closed email lists monitored by police after the heinous crimes of organising benefit gigs and leafletting GAP. They've been stopped by police photographers in London who knew their names, the group they were with, the colleges they went to and the pub they'd be going to after the demonstration. Don't think you have to be a terrorist to get on a state list and be monitored-ANY kind of attention will get you on there, and once you're on, you'll stay on.

Hate him if you want, but there's no denying that Bill Gates made PCs mainstream and accessible-with Windows 95 onwards, anyone could use a PC-no need to muck about with a terminal, or config.sys, or compile your own kernel.

I personally think this is part of the reason for the hatred by the Open Source movement-I'm old enough to remember having to actually learn to use an OS to use a PC, and I think many geeks hate him for demystifying computer use-suddenly, their skills were obsolete in the face of Plug and Play

  17. Bad idea for several reasons on Video-Game Publishers Outsource Development · · Score: 2, Informative

1)Cultural differences. A culture founded on Confuscian ideals has few reference points with one founded on Hellenistic ones, for example. This pretty much ensures you can't outsource design. It also introduces communication difficulties between designers and coders.
2)Work ethic. Missed deadlines, shoddy work etc are mentioned in the article. What isn't mentioned is the shit approach to aftersales-Eastern European games are notorious for never being patched.

Essentially, the only real part that can be outsourced well is the art. This has already been going on for years, and it's only a logical step now to use the company in Saigon rather than the one in London-right up till Kinetix questions how the people you hired could afford the site licenses.
