Unacceptable in concept and practice. Mod parent up!
On a slightly different subject: I heard about a system which detects email spams, rejects them, but ask for something like a re-send from the spamming server but.... 1 char by 1 char accepted only at the rate of 1 per second ! This is the same concept (so not acceptable), but at least you overburden the server and not the network.

I have got just a few transactions, but some with rather big money + international shipment & payment. No way I go for that if I don't have individual bank account details. It does not solve the problem. But if something goes wrong I know where to start. Ebay is out of the loop. And the end seller (thieve) knows I'll be able to track things down.
This is a hassely solution in order to initiate a payment, but it's more peaceful. That's a big peace of mind.)
Well, so it looks I am more than late. Tells you how often I focus on... advertisement and Google.:-) Just I did not see clever-ish adv system before today. Z.
Well, I went through a bit of basic digging. See the google adsense quick quick tour
My first move was obviously again some highly intrusive, content distortion, un-fair adv system. Well... it does not not look like that at all. I am surprised. I believe their system could be fair, and provide adv while not ruining pages showing up adv. A while ago I read about systems adding links into web content on the client side. Just imagine an email from your best friend, viewed through an internet browser, polluted with random links! I mean in the text of the email not around. Maddening. So I was concerned about this AdSense being similar.
It looks like eventually some advertisers get the point that web adv can be not more than a text link. No pics, no flash, no pop up... At least AdSense looks like that from snapshot: only text. From an end user point of view I say: well if it's clearly identified as ad, and indeed non obtrusive (i.e. on the side not flashy) I could think about accepting the idea.
Summary: for the first time I have the feeling this could respect all users, be fair, be efficient... Wow !
Personally, first thing I de-activated, carefully, thoroughly. We have got enough proof that too "good" integration by a single producer is the shortest way to doom.

As a reminder, the ALICE experiment at CERN will produce per year 1 PB ( Peta Byte ) of _raw_ data. This is only _one_ experiment out of _four_. Add DB overhead and you start getting the picture. And no: there won't be backups: too big.
The nature of particle physics is to be statistics. The search is for slight deviations from what is predicted. So the amount of raw data is huge. It is also that the amount of (raw) data per second produced will be in some case magnitude of order bigger.
It is thought that some data will not be stored at all at CERN, but sent straight to remote storage farm. Too much data to be stored localy.
The people analysing those data will be scattered over the planet, involving indeed the need of big transfers.
Ha ha ha: is this needed ? Hi hi let's think about it... Please dump all the crap data you pretend to need and ask again the question.
FYI. This quote is often misinterpreted as something like "be as violent to your enemy as he was with you." The saying actually aims at expressing right the opposite view which is 'be measured enough to get only an eye or a teeth, if that's all what your enemy "got" from you'.
In other words, applying the 'eye for an eye' would lead to what you suggest: not jailing a man for 9 years for a few (feekin #*%$! aaaarg I hate them) millions spam, when a killer could be jailed for 5 years only.
When you put a current through a piezoelectric material (e.g. Quartz), it vibrates.
As far as I remember a detail is: when you apply _variable_ current, piezoelectric material will vibrate.
I worked during a training period with accelerometers. Basically those are a bit of piezoelectric material connected to an oscilloscope (to make it simple). The sensitivity of those devices is quite simply mind blowing. Put 10 m between you and your experiment table, just move you arm and observe the plot on the oscilloscope !
Applications of piezo accelerometers can be vibration-signature analysis. Any engine (motor, heater...) vibrate. So you can benchmark "normal" vibrating and pre-failure signature... Provides ways of forecasting failures on planes, factories...
