My father works as a manager for the systems programmers for a bank (I work there as a DBA intern). The bank recently migrated Lotus from a bunch of small servers to a mainframe, and he says that the company is saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year now. On the other hand, you have a fine example of companies migrating from mainframes to servers to save tons of money. I brought this up to him, and he was baffled by how this company could save money on the deal. So I am undecided as to the superiority of either the little server cluster or the mainframe monolith.
Personally, I'm a Linux guy and I like servers, but after reading this article I'm thinking about heading into the profession that my father got into!
This has nothing to do with 'irresponsible' organizations. You weren't suggesting that Google may lose user data like banks have been recently, you were suggesting that Google would malevolently abuse the information given to them for their own gain, without any evidence to suggest this could be true except your gut feeling that 'this could be abused...'. Paranoia.
So can cars, computers, airplanes, etc. Are you suggesting we forget about using anything that might possibly have a chance of being abused? Seriously, the paranoid people around here on/. need to return to reality. Do you people enjoy living in fear of everything and everybody around you?
Google is a leader that continues to lead by making the non-executives happy and economically secure, something that other companies either couldn't do or didn't want to do. Why pay your people well when you can make more money by driving them like slaves and paying less money? Why hire PhDs? Why give them decent working environments when you can give them cookiecutter cubes and pointy-haired bosses to contend with, which all make you more money?
And on top of that, they make "free" software that people like. Their software isn't only better functionality-wise, but interface-wise. Google serves ads in a decent manner without intruding on my website/email/IM viewing experience. Yahoo serves me a stupid ad every time I startup Yahoo Messenger that gets in my way every single time. It's large, flashy, and intrusive. If Google can give me IM with less ads, why not? Google got big because it gave people what they wanted. Companies that are pissed at Google AREN'T giving people what they want. I think it is time for companies to conform to Google, not the other way around. And you certainly can't call Google evil or bad because they piss off those CEOs that lose money because of Google's business model.
It's funny to see all the overreacting going on with this article. It's almost like people don't actually know what they're talking about, but just want to sound insightful for karma's sake. Now, if only we could get the mods to mod down all the +5 insightful comments that are completely wrong to -1 overrated, we'd be in good shape.
I don't agree with the use of DRM at all, and I certainly won't use anything with DRM attached to it. I'd sooner give up movies and television than to use DRM and promote such corporate policies.
But, I also know I'm going to be a minority. So for those that don't do as I do, open DRM is the next best thing. I hate it, but it seems necessary for the ignorant users out there.
And if you call now you will also receive an Omniscient Hard Disk Drive Solution(R) from Infinium Labs(TM) which will hold 5 PB of data for eternity absolutely free! This OHDDS can withstand obuse from nuclear attacks, millions of computer viruses and worms, hellfire and brimstone, submersion in server administrator urine, and even volcanic eruptions! Order Now!
You're an exceptional child indeed! Kids break things, and are more likely to break things that they didn't have to pay for. My cousin broke my uncle's laptop monitor by closing the laptop while a book was on the keyboard (no joke). This goes against all logic, but it happens. Personally, I treat everything my parents give me with respect and care, but I suppose I understand the value of what they give me and am thankful for it. I can't expect the same out of other kids.
Wonder what would happen if we eliminated 'overpopulation' of the human species? Perhaps the lack of oxygen consuming beings would cause an ice age? Would that be a kicker.
If I have a brick and mortar store and an unsatisfied customer enters my store and begins passing out fliers and berating my business with a megaphone, INSIDE MY STORE, do you think that's acceptable?
Should I even permit him to do the same thing in at the entrance door or even in the parking lot??
What about on the sidewalk across the street?
Where is the line drawn?
That's a good question, where is the line drawn? Should I now not criticize a company because it may make them unhappy if I do so?
Imagine you are using your laptop on, you guessed it, your lap. Apple was kind enough to install a mousepad on the underside of the laptop. The problem I pose is how to actually "utilize" that mousepad. "Which digit" I asked.
Quick, get Thomas Jefferson on the phone! John Adams has killed free speech! Our freedoms are being trampled while big corporations get bigger and richer and more powerful! This is a heinous crime against humanity and it must be stopped!
The US is going down the tubes, the book 1784 was right! It was just 14 years late...

It's important because now we can generate enough power...er, current, to power a graphics card powerful enough to run Long...er, Windows Vista.
We can also fight back when there is a thunderstorm around. Before, Thor was able to torch us at will with no fear of return fire. Now we can stand every whory hair on his wrinkled body on end.
Stop it, you're not allowed to bring up important information like that so soon after someone's blog rantings are posted on the /. front page!

That only counts for 3 of the 11 anti-viruses, and that doesn't include BitDefender which get all 6 viruses without signatures.

Sorry, but I'm keeping my browser, thanks. RSS feeds are nice, but they don't replace a genuine web browser for me.

I don't think the problem is how people view predators, per se, but how predators view people.
Why didn't you just say it like this:
"Go to my website http://herogames.com/Products/TE.htm
It has a galaxy in it, so that makes this sort of on-topic."
Since when did West Point start hiring EA employees as teachers?
I think there might be some hidden message that, I just can't find it. Any hints?
Slashdot doesn't need anymore catchphrases you insensitive clod!
Very interesting to hear these sort of details. *NO WONDER* record companies are so scared.

Allow me to give you a hint.

The ladies probably won't understand.
Now all they have to do is make the button-bar underneath...the PowerBooks be touch sensitive to allow for multibutton there too.
And which digit do you plan on using to press those buttons? I'm afraid to ask about double-clicking...
Ever consider that your choice of browser is the problem?
