    I moved into a house previously owned by a smoker. Almost got nicotine poisoning just from touching the wallpaper...

    A house or car is something different than a computer, I think. But when you buy a house, you should have smelled it before you signed the contract. A car can be horrible. But a computer??? I mean, it smells yeah, but there is no smoke involved here. At least, not until the thing goes up into flames.

    Set up one computer as a master repository and do everything over SVN+SSH.

    Read before you post! He is already using SVN. And I think it goes without saying that he knows about SSH.

    These people have not been part of the "world" (or society) for about 20 years. And yeah I know that prison is part of the world and society, but they totally missed the whole internet thing, so it's not surprising that they think this can be done. On the other hand, his lawyers should have adviced them better.

    People already install the Flash plugin to get their IE working with YouTube. Why can't they install some HTML5 video support plugin?

    Because that makes the whole idea useless. The purpose is to have browsers support this natively without using plugins. HTML5 is a good step in that direction I think, although we have to wait and see how MS implements that video tag.

    Sadly, this will do nothing but make Apple more sure that they should not open up the iPhone platform more.

    ...which is complete BS! Whether Apple opens up the platform or not will not depend on an issue like this. It will depend on their vision on how to make money and keep it selling. If they allow an ssh-server in the future, knowing this, they will force the user to change the password to something else.

    I don't know what devices you have, but I don't have a badge on my chest that can communicate with a ship in outer space with no amplifiers or transmitters inbetween.

    Other than the detectors it's just software.

    You can't possibly be serious. You can rent one for a day at a time if you can find an available one. But, the best I've ever heard of is a 1-week timeshare, but you'll never get the week you want.

    You mean you can do this without using the ethernet port? I can only use either the ethernet or airport connection for just one connection. So airport is either hotspot (server) for receiving connections from other devices, or it connects as client.

    When I setup my macbook as hotspot, the internet connection gets lost. So the network is only local, unless I use the ethernet port to connect via cable.

    Yeah but when you do you cannot connect to another hotspot anymore. And that's what this is about. And this is currently not possible in OSX, and probably not in OS9 (I cannot check that).

    technology. For example, Clippy and Microsoft Bob.

    For the sake of all the paperclips in the world, whether they're not yet made, holding tight in sea containers to be shipped off into a new future, being used in office for good or bad, and even the rusty ones waiting to be dissolved in stinky sewers - STOP BASHING CLIPPY!

    He was the first paperclip to make it into the real world, even though he was not real. For paperclips, he is like Nelson Mandela or Gandhi. He gave them a voice. He gave them a face and a very friendly one. Have mercy. I say no more.

    Your immune system responds better if there are constant challenges to it, which is what a diversified ecosystem does.

    Lots of sex.

    Without condoms (and with swallowing). Regular exchange of bodily fluids also keeps your immune system ticking over. Regular sex might help morale as well.

    My first reaction to seeing this article was how long it will take for Fox News and friends to declare open source software as socialist and how comrade Obama has taken jobs away from hard working capitalist programmers. It's really not a stretch given their track record.

    Take a look at the drupal logo. I think this calls for a big investigation to confirm that Obama is an alien!

    I thought a Dutch Delete only applied to torrents?

    No no! The Dutch Police used to share all phone taps via torrents, and now they don't know how to delete those. That's the real reason why The Pirate Bay should be shut down.

    It's called a Dutch Delete. It helps deleting the case by messing up the evidence.

    In the Netherlands you can deposit the design at a local tax office. Yes you read that correct. They will file it for you, and it can be used as official proof in a court case. It costs about $50. This is not a patent, but it could protect you against one. Possibly other countries offer a similar service.
