I have been without cable or satelite for a year now. I have MythTV setup with dual tuner which captures OTA programs. After the shows get recorded an automated process converts the mpeg2 files into mpeg4 for lower file size and easy to stream in home network format. On the front end I have 4 apple TV connected to 4 TVs in different rooms. Each of them is running XBMC on it which streams the recorded programs from MythTV. My network is a mix of WIFI G and ethernet over power line. Works fairly well. Only problem is I can't watch live tv on the Apple TV because uncompressed mpeg2 is too much to stream. And the Apple TV are too underpowered to decode it properly.
I get channel lineup information from schedulesdirect on yearly subscription. Anything I missed? My only gripe is not having sports access. This year missed NBA completely.:(
Nobody is talking about Drug Patent here. This is related to software patent. Especially the ones which the patent hold never implemente nor has any plan to implement. Those patents stifle competition and innovation. Kapeesh?
The only problem is, if it is released for general hardware, it may not do much better than M$ windows. Hardware drivers are the main culprits for instability in any OS
No Suse is. Atleast in my books. Suse 10.1 installed out of the box on my Dell dimension 9150 without any tweaking. Before Suse I tried to install Ubuntu and could not get the graphics card to recognize nor the wifi will work.
Try Suse. I must say I was way more impressed with Suse/OpenSuse 10.1 than Ubuntu dapper. My video card worked out of the box. USB wireless adapter worked almost, needed a bit of tweaking. But with Ubuntu I had a dreadful time just getting it to install (mainly because of the ATI video card that came with Dimension 9150)
It is super fast to load and run. I remember buying and running it long time ago in mid 90s. Liked it quite a bit. Then in next couple of years came StarOffice (now OpenOffice). Which was bloated, slow but feature rich. Anyway, it is interesting to see that Applixware is still hanging out there.
You use your cell phone. In all likelihood you have more than one cell phone in the home

They have an increasing losses due to marketing. Some people have been frowning upon that, but I think so early in business it is important to capture the market. As much as possible. So I would think they are on right track. Also their service is pretty good. I have them for over an year now and quite happy.
So they pre emptively deciding on a release date of a patch/pack in anticipation of finding much bugs in the current system which have not been discovered yet?
Or, do they already have the bug list and they will just get to it by 2007?
This story made me a bit sad. In the 80s Minolta was the pioneer in SLR business with their innovative autofocus system. The 7000, 7000i(I used to own one) was quite advanced. I still have a Maxxum 5 that I bought few years ago. But truth be told once I moved to dSLR with Nikon D70 I have not taken any picture with my Minolta. I wonder if they had released their 7D when market was not that saturated they may have had survived. But from what I understand Minolta never wanted to get into digital SLR. Only after merging with Konica they came up with their 7D.
O well lets see how sony handles this. Maybe a good thing for the consumers.
Debian 3.1 is really great. True, they have taken a long time to make this release but as I see it it is a great OS for the server. I am running it on my server and very happy with almost no fiddling I had to do with it. However, trying to run it on my workstation was a different story. Mainly because of all the wifi issues I ran into. But that is not solely debian's problem. Fedora had the same issue. So if you are looking for something rock solid for your server, go with debian. If you want something on your workstation supporting tons of new new hardware and offer opportunity for endless finddling, go with Fedora Core 4. Just my 2 cents.
Are you serious? Why would I want require a video card on my server? Or are you talking about the workstations?
CD/DVD drives are only needed if you do not insta/boot from network. Most of the shops using sparcs already have process to handle netboot/installation and do not need a dvd/cd drive.
If I remember correctly "Maya" is the rendering software that most movie studios use. Titanic was rendered on a linux farm. That was what... 5+ years ago?
The cities/municipals are doing the right thing by taking this initiative. This brings every Joe user to the reach of boradband at a much faster rate than the one set by the telephone and cable companies. The idea that the contents coming over these pipes will be limited/restricted is simply ridiculous.
Maybe second or third. In all likelihood people will be using IPTV for various other things. One of which maybe watching TV on your pc. But I see IPTV gathering momentum in terms of security business and other usage. For example, in a gas station nowdays video surveillance is done on old vhs cassettes which are prone to bad quality. If streaming video along with IPTV is used, a security guard in one central location can monitor and call necessary folks for help if a situation arises. The streaming video can also be recorded and stored in digital format without loss of quality over time.

Why is this a surprise to anyone? It was expected from day one of the announcement. Atleast from my perspective.
We compile and install our own perl and the needed modules. We do not depend on the vendor.

No DVD Image? Or that is not needed? Sorry newbie to Ubuntu.

Why is Novell choosing Gnome over KDE? Not trying to start a war, but looking for objective answers.

Lack of pure built in clustering or proven replication support keeps me away from Postgres. Any idea when it will be part of the actual DBMS?
Dog ate it...

What about usb wifi devices? Notably linksys instant wireless 802.11b ones?

It is a big deal. The whole point of the article wast to find out how the said os performs on legacy hardware.
I thought the article/excerpt/review was pretty good and very timely. I especially liked the several ways to sa "No" section. Very good read.
