But you have to remember something. The way the US treated the political class of both Britain and France after world war two, your two best buddies in the whole wide world at the time, directly resulted in them developing independent nuclear deterrents.

Even you have to admit that insulting the British foreign minister to the point where a generally anti-nuclear democratic socialist cabinet will spend a significant portion of a wreaked economy by going for the bomb takes some doing.

Enought moaning about this. There are people with a few brain cells to spare here, why not come up with an idea or two on how to stop this happening instead of complaining.

Why not put a fine nylon net over the fuel tank to prevent the larger chunks of foam from hitting the shuttle?

While I'm sure they have a lot of guys working on this problem, I have no reason to suspect that this wouldn't work. It would also be fairly cheap, light, and would not require a complete redesign.

What do you think? Any other ideas?

While the NASA robots have done a good job in the "Hummm thats interesting" way of Geology, if Beagle 2 had landed, we would know if life had existed in that area of Mars. Indeed, the head of the Beagle project has critised the two NASA rovers for lacking anything to conduct any real science.

It is reasons like this that we need to send more robots. Beagle 2 cost a mere fraction of either of the two NASA rovers and they in turn cost a hell of a lot less than a manned mission.

Until money is not an object (ie like in the original space race, aka "beat the commies/capitalist pig dogs"), a manned mission won't happen. This is the next best thing.

Instead, they will try and argue the point of view they have already taken on the issue, why its right and why you are wrong. From skate parks to rubbish collection to education policy to software patents, they don't listen they tell you have to say, they tell you what they think and why they are right.

"Cancellation is likely to help sales of Boeing's Apache helicopters, which cost about $25 million each and were used successfully in Afghanistan and Iraq" I find this bit of the artical a little strange, it was my understanding that the Apache took a bit of a mawling in Iraq. While in the main operation they took part in they only lost two helicopters, the rest of the squadron was effectively put out of service for the rest of the war by men armed with AK47's and RPG's. Maybe this cancelation reflects this, it might be all fine and dandy to have electronic jamming for this that and the next thing, but it's not worth much if it can be taken down with massed machine gun fire as the Apaches were subjected to.
