Imagine the number of "click here to remove your virus" programs Iran has downloaded trying to remove Stuxnet/Flame before they knew what it was. They've probably got so many backdoors on their network now they'll never get it totally clean.
When your a corporate CEO billionaire and need to lay off people in order to buy your own friggin hawaiian island and then come back and bitch and whine that you can't find "talented people" something is fishy.
Like it or not, the iPad is a fad. Most people buy it because it's a visually pleasing piece of hardware. Some state their two year old picked it up and "learned it in two minutes!". News for you people: Any kid who can pick their nose and wipe it on their pants has just learned how to pick an icon and swipe the screen. It's not rocket science. Your kid's not a genius. Apple isn't magic.
These "trends" in hardware and software go away after awhile. Everyone used to piss themselves like an overly-excited puppy whenever the latest version of Windows would draw nigh. That went on for about 20 years until Vista. People started moving to alternatives. The iPad will go the same way because the exact same functionality can be had for half the price or less. You can already see Apple getting worried with all of their legal wrangling with the Galaxy III.
I haven't had an NVIDIA driver work the same in Linux as it does in windows. Ever. Random screen blanking (nouveau driver), weird X errors (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error) and re-compiles every time there is a system kernel update. In comparison, all you need to do in Windows to get the NVIDIA driver working is hold down the enter key with a stapler while it's installing. Accept all the defaults. reboot. it's working.
At "the end of the day" this is not consistency, it's crapsistency.
Kids don't have any reason to learn how to use their brains or learn any skills. What would they need them for? We've managed to offshore just about every profession requiring either.
I take back every nasty thing I ever said about Comcast.
Don't hold your breath. Comcast is not doing this because they are on your side. As soon as the RI/MP AA coughs up some more money to cover Comcast's troubles, they will be back to business as usual.
I'm mystified what the motivation would be to work on something like that
Meh... The BSD crowd is a bit like the whiny younger brother who never seems to get enough attention. They get to feeling a little inadequate once-in-a-while and come out with their own bootable iscsi target on CD, or update some long forgotton arcane network drivers. After they get some cred for a few weeks they crawl back under the bed. Don't get me wrong, BSD is a great OS, but it suffers from the same growing pains Linux went through 10 years ago.
I can remember a day when geeks would have been hopping-mad about a computer which comes with a feature to "forget about replacing or upgrading any component". Apple seems to exist for the sole purpose of seeing how much abuse it can inflict on it's user base - and the userbase seem to love them for it. Very odd.
Corporate culture almost demands that you spend at least enough money each year to not shock the hell out of the boss
This is the kind of mentality that makes management keep cutting IT staff, and budget, annually. If you're dumb enough to let one person "jerry-rig a mess" that's the fault of management.
Always, always have at least two people on a project. Documentation should be reviewed for accuracy on a regular basis. Have people design a plan on paper first before any hardware purchasing happens. Have them stick to it so you have an idea what's going on. If they need to change paths, the paper plan should be updated first.
You don't need to run to EMC everytime somone needs a bigger hard drive or test server.
..and switched to LXDE. Simple reason, KDE started getting toooooo much garbage. The last straw was Akonadi. There was no way to completely disable it and it would randomly pop-up error messages even after tic'ing the checkbox to "disable" it.
I don't care much about what Desktop I use, I'm just glad there are alternatives so when the one I'm using starts to suck ass, I can easily find something else. You can't do that with Windows or Macintosh.
Wrong. The bottom line for any job is at least somewhat enjoying what you're doing there. If you do not enjoy what you are doing, you end up being a prick manager or a really difficult co-worker and generally a miserable person to get along with. People who work "for the money" just make a lot of extra work for everyone else.
Money is a consideration that needs to be balanced as any other pro/con of a job (Benefits, Vacation, Overtime, Job Duties, Reporting Manager, etc.). If you work just for the money, it leads to a really bleak future both at work and away from it.
If only we could get quality people of this caliber to choose from. It would put an air of confidence around the future of the US instead of the corporate-sponsored Reality TV show it's turned into.

Can anything stop the all conquering iPad?"

You'd have better luck waiting for Duke Nuke- ...er..wait.. guess we can't use that one anymore.
Shh.... if they all run Linux we'll have no Apple users to laugh at.
Just like the serial number. Locks and serial numbers only keep honest people honest. This is just stupid legislation.

I'll bet Hallmark is just as thrilled.

Those scientists killed themselves and Stuxnet and Flame were actually created by Iran in an incredibly convoluted attempt to gain world sympathy.
