Buying into the "Walled garden == Security" philosophy doesn't cut it because you have no way to VERIFY things haven't been tampered with. You just "believe" they haven't been. You might as well just use cyanogen, root it, get an sha1sum of everything on the device and have a way to track changes. In the end, the easiest thing is to pay a one-time fee of $99 to MS and have them sign a mini-bootloader that can start up grub. That doesn't sound like such a big deal to me.

Also, many of the products containing corn syrup are made from extracts of the same corn used for large scale meat production; engineered to put on lots of pounds quickly. Corn syrup (and many corn products) are simply a blatant disregard for people's health in many ways.

Teachers rely pretty heavily on Unions to make their jobs worth the pay. Tea Party is putting an end to the unions, so don't count on good teachers being available any time soon.

It's not that diabolical. The press is just magnifying the generalized "shruggs" of the industry when the subject of RIM comes up. RIM has waited far too long to try and resuscitate their potential. They've been very adamant about any kind of radical change and seem convinced they can continue to do foolish things (releasing their fondleslab and *then* nixing it's Android support) and remain on life support with tax dollars from government contracts. In the end, they will probably file chapter 11 and leave the debt with the US taxpayers.
Just a guess, but this may indeed foster a fair amount of distaste for RIM.

That's a typical misconception. Apple puts together a very pretty package and basically dictates what you will run, how you will run it, what you can do with it, and where you can do it. There are a whole new set of problems with mac, and if you are quite limited as to what you can do software-wise. You will still have software problems. You still have viruses. You still have software problems with upgrades. People still need to search some forum from time-to-time to figure out how to fix some strange new issue. Ever try and build something from Ports only to have it *not* friggin work when you upgrade? Yeah, same issues. It's not a perfect world that everyone seems to imply. Don't get me wrong, Apple has gone to great lengths to make the use experienced top-notch, but it still has it's problems just like Windows, Linux and FreeBSD. I get really tired of people making it out to be some trouble-free system when it's not.

For corporate traffic, Don't put a box in between that traffic. If it fails, everything is down. Get a TAP, as you hinted, but make sure to get one that fails 'open'. Then, run Ntop off the TAP port. If the TAP burns up, or port goes bad, you still have network access.
It sounds like your "client" is just wanting to basically monitor on his family, so in that case, get a 10/100 HUB (not a switch) to stick downstream of your modem. Plug in your linux box on port 1, and the router/modem into port 2. Don't put anything else on it because.. it's a hub. Run Ntop on the linux box.

Some of, but not all of, Chrome is open-source. You really want that transparency in a web browser these days. Use Chromium instead.
