I'm Spanish, but I've lived in LA, NYC and SF. While NYC and SF are definitely nicer places to visit, I prefer LA to live. For once, people in LA generally acknowledge that their city is ugly, trashy, fake and decadent. Because of that, they don't tend to engage in futile arguments about which city's sights, food, lifestyle and cultural offerings are superior. Sure, there are those people but they'll rarely venture out of Santa Monica or "The Valley (TM)". On the other hand, when I go to a home party in SF, I keep hearing comments that make me cringe. Like this fucking hipster whose puppy fell from a bunk bed (yes..) and broke two legs: "Thank GOD we live in the city and I could find a 24h pet hospital!". Anyway, I won't comment on NYC since you're in Chicago and are probably familiar :).

My point: Ok, go Chicago! I like my cities cheap and uncouth.

The 2-3 good enough candidates that we met went to other "cooler" companies. This is considering H1b candidates, so I can't imagine how hard it would be to get by doing business without them. The problem is not the idea, it's the implementation of the visa program, which should really be oriented to specialists, not code monkeys for consulting companies.

That's actually a great analogy. I'm afraid Apple might be repeating the same error they made in the 80s by becoming self centered and ignoring the world of openness that was happening around them. Then it was the PC, not it might be Android that puts them back in a small, but admittedly very profitable corner of the market.

I'm Spanish and I believe this to be true. The last published surveys (it is now allowed to publish them too close to election day) gave a slight advantage to the conservative party (PP), but the vote count showed the socialist party (PSOE) ahead by a decent leap. The only significant event to take place in the lapse was the terrorist attack and the ensuing unrest. How exactly did this affect the results? Well, conservatives blame the left for trying to appease the terrorists by voting out a party that strongly opposed them. Liberals argue that it was the terrible handling of the situation by the government that gave the opposition the final advantage. My take: It was the government's fault. If they had handled it with care they could have pushed further ahead in the vote, just like we so often see (also in Spain) that a fearful enemy unifies people around their leaders. Instead, they were quick to blame the wrong guys (ETA, the Basque terrorist organization), which in turn made them look like they were manipulating the events in their profit.

I have no sympathy for the socialist party (much less after 6 years in power), but the conservatives made too many mistakes stupid mistakes in just 3 days, and they're still paying for it. I'm afraid the incompetence of the main parties is going to let fringe groups start crippling in the institutions. May you live interesting times :).

In Spain, many (good) religious schools that get government money are like public schools on paper, but then use loopholes like demanding a really steep PTA fee from all parents, which in effect turns them into schools for the rich. Still, I don't think these are unsolvable issues. In places like Sweden (of all places), they're being used with great success.

The decision to redirect google.cn to the HK version came a few weeks after the initial announcement, but exactly the day after the passing of the health care bill. This would certainly distract some attention away from the right wing scaremongers at FOX and others, which would in turn help the democrats. The timing is just too neat to be casual. Is it?
