  1. Hard to believe. on Children Help Their Mothers for Decades · · Score: 0

This doesn't make much sense. From my minimal knowledge of biology, during development the baby is separated from the mother by the placenta, for several reasons. One of the more important is that the baby's tissue provokes the response of the mother's immune system. If there's any residual tissue within the mother, the immune system would respond, and attack that tissue.

That's what Limited corporations are all about. If a corporation gets sued, shareholders are not liable for any action of the company, be it illegal or not. Actually that works for management too.

  8. It's been going on for ages on Who Will Pay For Open Access? · · Score: 1

xxx.arxiv.org arXiv has been funded almost exclusively by Los Alamos National Laboratory. There are mirrors all arround the world provided by various universities. Authors do the formatting in latex, and the papers get compiled and downloaded automatically. What is missing in this case is quality control, which again could be done by authors of other papers, as is the case with susbscription journals. An automatic peer review system could be a good solution to this problem. I'm sure that funding for this kind of project can be found, either from universities or directly from government grants.

...which is why open source works. The philosophy of OSS apps has always been to make small programs that do one thing very well, then join them together to get good funcionality for more complex tasks. And not through specific design, but throught adaptation and tinkering. ...yeah yeah preaching to the converted and all that...

It's a great publicity stunt, just cos it's quirky. Look, it's even made it on /. Similar thing happened with the "Milka" cows in Switzerland. They painted cows with a variety of adverts (for a reasonable fee) and let the cows graze close to the railways in Switzerland. But most of the influence was due to people telling other people about the idea, because they found it interesting. An example of memes in action.

Hmm. How bloated a system is, is also down to the user. In the case of a Debian installation (as an example of a modular distro, other examples are Slackware, Gentoo and the like), you can have a base installation and any number of combinations of software on top of that. What you install is totally up to you... In the case of windows however, you're screwed either way.
