"the best case scenario of alien contact would be us ending up as their pets"
The two dogs and one cat who I cohabit with have their meals prepared and served on time, daily. They sleep as often as they want, and are completely sheltered from the evils of the world. I would say that so long as my new alien overload refrains from habitually beating me, I'm good.
"He is a lifelong professional politician. " - not true at all. I'm not a fan either, just someone pointing out that you're giving +4 insightful to an idiot calling people idiots on baseless hyperbole.
She runs around the country "endorsing" people she agrees with, most of whom are either completely uninformed, completely dishonest, or complete lunatics.
She along with Jim DeMint and a few others are co opting the Republican party to gain power for themselves. And like clockwork the masses are falling for it... YET AGAIN!!!
MOST (I almost want to say all at this point) of these people want more power, and YOUR money, and that's about it...
I shrank the standard font to a size 6 courier font, then printed to bitmap, re sized the bitmap, lather rinse repeat. I ended up getting 8 standard 8x11 sheets onto a single 8x11 front and back.
This plus a magnifying lens and voila...
Of course, the real lesson here is that by the time you get done doing all this work, you have pretty much spent enough time around the material to soak it in such that you really do not need it anyway.
Suppose a GOD truly exists as you describe as a "psychopath".
Why would anyone with any soul at all ever worship a deity proclaiming his/her intent to cast so many righteous individuals (in terms of their own belief system, right or wrong) to an eternity in hell because they worshiped the wrong way?
"they choose to do the "right" thing because it is right, not because someone else said it was right and threatened them with torture if they disobeyed."
I call it individualized social-humanistic morality [link], where "right" is self-determined based on the awareness of the potential of human society.
The act of constructing the Klingon language was itself an aid in understanding how other languages were constructed, and perhaps even contributed to understanding "dead" languages?
While I have no evidence to support the claim, it certainly made sense to me when I heard it.
"teachings don't tell you to go about doing that. People decided to go about it."
I think you are proving his point for him...
People, with their own independent thought processes, are capable and most often willing to allow for interpretation to suit their needs, whatever those needs may be, up to and including killing their neighbor because he/she doesn't "believe".
Religion is not the enemy per se, it is a human being's BELIEF in a religion that is the real problem.
IF Rick were involved, I'd imagine him wearing a black helmet and flying around in a huge steamer mop with Mel Brooks, sucking the water vapor from helpless planetoids.
There are plenty of Certs for programmers, just as there are plenty of Certs for engineers.
That makes no real difference as a Cert is a piece of paper, and in the end no real reflection on the quality of work that can be or will be performed by an individual at any point in time. Even the best programmer or engineer in the world can have a bad day.
The answer is NOT in Certs. The answer is in proper regression and systems testing, code and design reviews, and consistent QA. All of that is expensive, which is why it is rarely if ever done correctly.
I got nearly 2/3 the way through the comments before I saw blamed laid at the feet of those responsible.
The Microsoft OS does not come preloaded with Trojans in so far as I am aware.
Blame the guy who wrote the Trojan? - Definitely! Blame the PHB who put a less secure OS on a mission critical machine? - Debatable. Blame the OS manufacture when the product is used in ways never intended? - Sorry, can't see it.
When I first read MMO I envisioned one huge HUGE map with hundreds of players simultaneously controlling small little armies of little dudes running around with hammers and ballistas and siege-craft of every color imaginable crawling across the map annihilating each other...
Now THAT would be cool enough to warrant tolerating GFWL

"And every president since has been more showman than leader."
Yes, but not Mr. Reagan... a man who spent the entirety of his life making films in Hollywood. No sir, not a showman at all.
+4 Insightful?!? Really? C'mon mods...
"He is a lifelong professional politician. " - not true at all. I'm not a fan either, just someone pointing out that you're giving +4 insightful to an idiot calling people idiots on baseless hyperbole.
Oh please... cry me a river.

+1 best new word of the (day/week/month/year)
link
Probably better than most news broadcasts these days...
" Dear Slashdot, I'm killing myself. My wife left me today. Go to hell, J.S. "
You first!
The omission was intentional, and also irrelevant to the point.
For the sake of argument, I'll assume I'm "much" older than you.
My value of life was never tied to the existence of TV. Would life be different? Surely. Still worth living? Need I really answer?
"life without wi-fi is not worth living"
That is one of the saddest comments I have ever read.
"If you're considering becoming a christian, please do it now. There's not much time left."
How much time is left? I want to mark it on the calendar with a reminder to post back to you just before the end, thanking your for the warning.

Or perhaps they all exist! And each of us have to serve our respective eternities with each in turn, before arriving at our predisposed choice?
Something to think about...
The act of constructing the Klingon language was itself an aid in understanding how other languages were constructed, and perhaps even contributed to understanding "dead" languages?
While I have no evidence to support the claim, it certainly made sense to me when I heard it.
I get the Futurama reference, but I'm afraid I don't see the "joke".
Have you worked with the younger generation? Some of them actually spew this nonsense and mean it!
Who exactly do you think originated concepts such as worker threads and local storage?
*sigh*
Come on mods... +5 interesting?!?
The GP was not saying he chained his kids to the front of the TV/Computer 24/7 here..
Surely we are not saying there is no place for a kid on a computer or in front of a TV at all?!?
Stupid modding at it finest.
While I agree with what you are saying, you're missing the point.
The network was not fined because a nipple was shown or because kids may have been harmed.
The network was fined because the FCC could fine them for and incident in-congruent with stated law.
Its equivalent to someone standing in front of you waving a $20 bill and saying "here take it"... what do you expect?
Law exists to:
(1) Grant or repeal power from an entity
(2) Displace monies from one entity to another
(3) Promote or suppress the political agenda of an entity
All the rest is just fluff...

On Slashdot?!@!? Surely you jest...
