well essentially this relaunch broke their product versioning. windows has always followed a strict versioning procedure, until it was discovered that vista was like George W Bush, nobody wanted to be his friend. The number "7" was to basically deceive everyone into thinking that this was a different code base.

The media is unfair? If I was running a campaign I'd say stuff that was newsworthy. My opponent makes a point, I make a counter point, and then some. I'd lead the conversation, not get play catch-up and still trail behind. And I certainly wouldn't make decisions I'd have to defend over and over instead of ones that my opponent would have to beat. Like say, choice of running mate.
News sources aren't obliged to report articles tit for tat, that's the job of the campaign manager to keep the competition on it's toes.

Specifically, they were trying to turn their problem - which was a lack of awareness that they were being observed keying in the number, into his problem, which is being a busybody. One is a disciplinary offense, the other is just bullshit. But if they can make everyone feel that he has done something heinously wrong (and consequently that they have done nothing wrong themselves), they can hide the severity of their own errors in a shroud of fud. Which matters when evaluation time comes around and you're looking forward to that bonus. Nobody cares, you see, that it is instilling into people the apathy that could allow another 9/11 to happen, they're looking at goals closer to home.
