Sorry to be malcontent, but why should I care whether or not apple uses ibm or intel inside their computers. Will it effect the outcome of apple's computing might in the near future? Doubtful. Additionally the manner in which apple operates supposes that the end interface and integrity of their computers will change very little. Perhaps the only difference will be an ugly sticker on the case that says "Intel Inside". Perhaps apple will ritz that up also...
* Windows versus Linux - Applications and Utilities
I save a lot of time thanks to Windows XP, which brings me to another area where Linux is lacking. As I am sitting here writing this column, my computer is busily defragging my hard drive, running my virus scanner, and I'm being shown a list of all the latest MS security patches that are being remotely installed on my machine today. Why doesn't Linux come with any defragmenting tools or virus scanners or Active Backdoor Update like you get with Windows? These are all must-have features for me. Linux is seriously lacking in Internet utilities as well. No way would I run a Linux operating system if it means I can't connect to America Online. Also, where is Microsoft Office for Linux, Windows Media Player for Linux and Outlook Express for Linux? Nowhere to be found. If I can't type a letter, make a spreadsheet, or email anyone with Linux, why on earth would I ever put it on my desktop?
Guess I won't be listening to music when root anymore. In fact I am sound proofing my room to keep the noises from infiltrating my microphone and causing me to accidently delete/home
now if I get stranded on a deserted isle with only my ipod equipped with its super-nuclear battery I will always have music to listen to; at least until my ears rot off from radiation exposure.
alcohol often slows down response times. maybe you should give your monitor a sobriety test. mine passed with flying colors last night and my mouse shows no lag when I move it across my screen.
I dislike generalization like this. It is neither correct or incorrect, but somewhere in between. In generalizing you can predict or explain some aspects of the object in questing, yet the little details that are just as important slip through the cracks of the generalization and mess up the whole model you built. Sure you can describe computer viruses with biological terms and arguments; however, you will never be 100% correct.
I don't know whether this is good or bad. I could possibly gain security from the gov't's attempts to stop users from using WHOIS records falesly...ie. they might be using my name or phone number or etc. to do something devious. Or, will I be losing privacy because internet anonymity is slowly becoming illegal?
Once I stepped off of that jingling merry-go-round called Windows and started playing on tux's swingset, I realized that Microsoft was stabalizing the software world. At first glance that looks like a good thing...and it was. But the stabilization hasn't stopped and we are fast approaching the doldrums of computer operating systems if Microsoft continues in its monstrous stride towards a single imperfect operating system. For that will be the result if windows remains king. One OS shall rule them all. And Frodo (played by Linus or whoever creates the best OS) will have to smite the Window in Mordor, under the Eye of Sauron (played by Billy G).
And then there will be much rejoicing.
