    Don't scoff at the wonkyness of the medium too quickly. It certainly has merit, where else can you find 10 Gigs of mass storage that cheap? Just the right size for storing those deeveedee pir8 copies. And its alternative use as an adhesive prevents the MPAA from taxing it heavily. Or will we see "denaturated" scotch tape, just as we have "denaturated" alcool (for non-drinking usage) now?

    ... that logs the decoded data stream to disk in addition to displaying it. Such drivers ("DVD rippers") have been available for Windows for a long time, for this express purpose, and nobody seems to have bothered.

    So far for "no decrypted signal to digital output": from the point of view of the player software, the video board *is* a digital output...

    Speaking of Omens: does anybody chance a guess what this eclipse will do the stock markets, and to Linux stocks in particular? The solar eclipse was a boon (RHAT IPO), the "extrabright" full moon of December 22nd was a catastrophe (CORL 4th quarter losses preannouncement), now what kind of news will the lunar eclipse bring?

    ... however, due to timezone difference, the eclipse happens late evening 20th January in North America, but in the wee morning 21st January in Europe. Hence American calendars show the full moon on 20th, whereas European ones show it on 21st.

    VA Linux' S-1 is significantly different from Red Hat's, whereas Linux One's is almost a word for word copy.

    Btw, this incident reminds me of that story of Bill Gates' grocery coupon:
    At the checkout line, Bill Gates started nervously searching his wallets, his pockets, for a rebate coupon of 50 cents that he though he had with him. But alas, he couldn't find it. In the meantime, a huge queue built up behind him. But he continued searching, until somebody waiting in the queue behind him just tossed him two quarters...

    One way to partake would be to short it just after its issue. Chances are it will open at more than 5 times its issue price, but then depreciate rather rapidly. If you short it, you can cash in big. However, unfortunately some brokerages might not allow to short stocks right after the IPO.

    Nobody said that the headlights were causing the traffic jams. Actually the traffic jams were probably caused by the many bozos looking at the sun. And the headlights by a darker-than-usual sun. Anyways, there must be great astrologers working for Red Hat (... or, for Goldman Sachs...)

    Strange that you mention this. During the solar eclipse last summer, there was that bizarre cult built around a strange piece of computer software. The members of this cult did exactly that: many signed away most of their life savings to an obscure startup in North Carolina. Some even got upset when said startup wouldn't accept their pagan gifts.

    Reminds of the Red Hat IPO last summer. On that day, people around here drove with their headlights on at noon, in order to celebrate this earthshaking event. No accidents though, but quite a few traffic jams.
