  1. In the jungle and in a taxi on Ask Slashdot: Where's the Most Unusual Place You've Written a Program From? · · Score: 1

    1. In a small hut in the jungle of Malaysia, programming an Electronic Health Records System for a government mobile clinic. The electricity was provided by a petrol generator set that ran out of fuel around midnight. I had to tap power by joining to the wires of the lights. My laptop was also literally full of bugs, since the insects were attracted by the only source of light in the jungle.

Since when has Debian been positioned as the distro for the general public? It is up to Debian derivatives like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc. to make things simpler for the average user. It is the distros like these that will be judged by the public whether Linux is ready for the mainstream, not Debian.

You can install a completely FOSS stack by running VistA on http://www.geocities.com/kdtop3/GT.M on top of Linux. The only issue is that GUI part, i.e. CPRS only runs on Windows. Modifying it to run on Wine is still incomplete.

  15. Re:Wait a sec! on Office Delayed, Too · · Score: 1

I believe OOo stores native documents in compressed form. If your document is mainly text, then 10MB contains A LOT OF TEXT to expand. If the 10MB file is mainly graphic objects then there would be less objects to uncompress, hence less time required.

  16. Lack of manuals on OpenOffice 2.0 vs. Microsoft Office · · Score: 2, Insightful

There is still the lack of uptodate printed manuals and dummy books that the new user could handily refer to, when it comes to OOo, whereas MS-Office had numerous books since the earliest versions.

This might have been suggested before: A few respected stocks analyst should study the SCO cases carefully - reviewing all the facts and discussions here, groklaw, etc. (Anyone close enough to these people to explain it gently to them?) If they can see the reality instead of the FUD, then they should recommend a sell instead of a hold or buy.
