From my meager understanding; the PPro/PII/PIII processors actually break down the x86 CISC into RISC-like chunks before execution... thus, they are technically RISC processors that emulate an x86.
Of course I could be completely wrong...

I would say "hexal" as it's "octal" and not "octimal"...
As a former VisualStudio and Turbo C++ addict I can tell you honestly that the traditional Unix development environment (the modern version) consisting of bash, vim/emacs, ctags, gdb, make, and gcc, is a very flexible, powerful, and efficient development environment.
It is not as "intuitive", but is much more user-friendly (assuming the user is a progammer and not some newbie) without all the glitches and fuckups that go along with a overdone IDE like VS.
Well, many companies realize that having a monopoly is asking for trouble. The sad part is, they have no choice.
To keep stockholders happy a company cannot rest on it's laurels, it must continue to grow... the stock must gain value. And with a company like Micros~1 (as opposed to Coca-Cola for example), they have to live up to the explosive growth rate of their stock value to avoid grumbling in the boardroom. And now that they have the consumer desktop locked in how do they continue their explosive growth? By going for the enterprise (NT), the embedded market (CE), ISPs, satellites, etc., etc.
Where does it end? Microsoft Burgers? ActiveFurniture? MS Interstate Explorer?
And thus, good people, we stare into the ugly hidden face of the most successful economic system on the planet. The all-consuming, insatiable but ever so generous beast that is Capitalism. We enjoy an unprecendented standard of living in the Western world due to the abundance brought about by free enterprise... but any economist will tell you that there is no real answer to the question, "Where does it end?".
Get an external modem and hang it off your serial port... I agree that ISA is doomed and rapidly disappearing, IMHO there's really not much reason to develop "PnP".
When you add in the prices of the Microsoft / commercial versions of all the goodies that you get on a Linux CD... I'm sure it comes pretty close to 5 grand.
You'd be suprised at the quality of morons who start ISPs these days. I recently asked one why she chose to use NT... "because a 14 yr. old hacker told me unix is not secure."
Linux did not grow out of Minix... it does not and never has had any Minix code in it. It did use the Minix file system at first and Linus (I believe) used Minix as the initial development platform, but that is all.
We would thank you to not spread this kind of misinformation.
So use NetBSD and Windows / MacOS... what's the problem?

It's not an IDE.. but it's a hell of a DE!
If all you do is email and web-browsing then your SOL if your connection is down anyway...
Hey! Pass that glue bag over here when you're done...
And that's without antialiasing...
Maybe X isn't so obsolete after all ;-)
Like you're gonna make money selling shareware?
heheh... that's why you'd use a decent file system instead of that FAT16/32 crap.
Indeed, Corel owns an entire buttload of fonts.

"I am tired of this bullshit."
Maybe you'll go away now?
"nobody gives a shit about Linux community"
Then why are you here? Please go away now?
Oh never mind, stay here and get all worked up, just don't come crying to me when you die of a conniption.
Because that would be wrong...
ummm... rewrite it?
Put down that crack pipe!

No we just ambush their compounds and then burn them alive.
HMMM... I've never heard any Christians "make such a big fuss about Buddhism, Taoism, etc."
Have you been watching Falwell again Mr. Coward?
Microsoft marketing seems to often have this effect on otherwise seemingly intelligent people.
I blame it on full page glossies in trade magazines... they should be banned from the office. ;-)

Well, I wouldn't say they suck... but how long between updates of their "weekly" columns?
And themes.org has been pretty stagnant since Trae left to do linux.com... sigh
At least Rob is still keepin it comin'. I don't know what I'd do without Slashdot ;)
Actually I think VW might themselves be vulnerable to a look-and-feel lawsuit from toaster manufacturers over the design of the new bug.
JK. Actually, I think the new bug looks pretty hot... I always stare when I pass one on the freeway.

Here's a rather hilarious .history file that allegedly comes from one of JP's accounts.
