I've been using the Perspectives addon for a while, and have been quite satisfied with it.
    http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~perspectives/firefox.html

If it (or similar functionality) could be built into Firefox (with some obviously necessary UI changes), I think it could go a long way towards solving the certificates problem. In all my time using it (well over a year now), I've only had one case where it told me things were awry but they were actually fine, and it was where the site had changed their certificate sometime in the last 30 days, and the graphs from the notary results represented that quite clearly to someone who knows what it means, but making that an easy call for someone who doesn't would be more difficult. That particular issue could be solved in software, though. If any changes were seen pretty much simultaneously by all notaries then they're probably safe changes. (They might have even added this in the latest version, since it's been a while since I've seen that particular problem.)

What really bothers me about the whole "Facebook" story is this:
When I joined Facebook, I liked the simplicity. They had taken a page from Google's book, and created a really simplistic, intuitive interface. No real user-configurable colors, or other silly things that are rampant on MySpace, and just make its already hideous design look worse. Then they got popular, and started to emulate MySpace more and more. MySpace would then copy elements of Facebook, and they've been going back and forth ever since. The simple interface was so much better...

In that case, why don't they just add it to everyone's taxes at the end of the year as a single, static fee? Why do they have to charge us directly for our usage? It doesn't seem like they've cared too much about our usage of other things in the past... (Public schooling comes to mind.)

I think I'm missing something big and obvious here... Can someone please enlighten me? :/

This also seems like a good idea because it would give them a static budget each year for their construction projects. Isn't a moving target based on actual usage much harder to hit? (Or at least pretend to hit...)
