Laurels are honors, awards, or distinctions. (From the Greeks wearing wreaths of laurel on their heads in victory. I'm sure you've seen the busts.)

If one rests on his laurels it means he lives by the adoration earned by his past accomplishments. He doesn't continue on the path that lead him to those honors.

Bottom line, "laurels" doesn't mean "ass."

I didn't say anything about a frenzy. I have demonstrated that the "environmental movement" used the very same scare-tactics in the past over "global cooling" that they use today over "global warming" and "global climate change."

I wrote the Earth Day folks and asked them if the first Earth Day was, as I'd heard, to raise awareness of global cooling. The ignored me. I'm inclined to take this to mean that it was.

This whole thing is rather separate from the Scientific issue, which I don't pretend to be informed about. The BS seems to be impenetrable on both sides of the debate. :-/

The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now.

You fundamentally misunderstand Open Source (at least to the extent that it overlaps Free Software). A piece of proprietary software lives or dies on market share, be it share of a niche, or share of all PC deployments. Conversely, Free Software (read: "community" Open Source) lives and dies on developer interest. I will grant that the two are not strictly unrelated, but scrabbling for a relatively small group of expensive users (in terms of developer time) is not only not "cutting your own throat", it is good strategy.

OO.o doesn't ignore OS X. Period. It does give Apple's proprietary display system the short shrift. For the reason cited above this is the right thing to do, at least until such time as a sufficient amount of non-transferable developer time materializes.
