I wish you all could see the smile this story brought to my weathered old face, and the way my sunken eyes sprang back to life. now excuse me, I have better "uses" for this bandwidth.
As usual I was reading the summary and skipping about every other line. I do this until I find something interesting to me.
I was quite interested to learn that:
over 300 people, including members of the media, personnel from the U.S. Department of Defense, Stationed in the stratosphere, well above the jet stream.
and I think to myself "WOW those guys are WAY up there"
good lord, when is this all going to stop. Seriously, just make it stop! The world is such a goddamn mess and these assholes are going to make it so I can't run a server... yeah, good idea. There is absolutely no "legitimate" use for a "server". I bet even the major music industry website's servers are secretly being used to "steal music". Otherwise how would you explain the "excessive" bandwidth usage?
am I the only one, who after years of watching TV comercials for girlie products, reads GFDL as Gnu Feminine Deodorant License? I just can't get it out of my head, no matter what I do.
wow. I am glad to see some good news like this. I have a cousin dying of leukemia(sp?) who probably won't live through the weekend. She is 37 yrs old. she has 4 kids... the younger ones are 2 and 4.
At times like this it is hard not to get mad at the medical profession. On the other hand I have a great appreciation for what medicine has done for my family.
The cousin I mentioned got an extra year of life because of an experimental stem cell (no not the kind thats been in the news) transplant.
My father has had open heart surgery twice. He is 64 years old and still goes backpacking with my brother and I.
My mom, although a survivor has had cancer 3 seperate times: breast cancer in each breast and a melanoma in her eye.
It is from the latter that I gained a great respect for medical research, and it is why I smile reading a story like this article.
when she had her eye cancer there was a new experimental treatment at the UW hospital here in seattle. They cut her eye open and sewed a patch of radioactive material over the tumor. They then sewed the eye shut and sent her home for several days with a lead shield over her eye.
Then they took her back to the hospital and cut the eye open again and removed the patch. Over the course of the next year the tumor died back (we know because of the ultrasound and other tests they do on her). Now she has finally lost the last of the usefull sight in that eye. The sight-loss is due to the close proximity of the radiation treatment to the optic nerve.
The only other treatment at the time was to remove the eye completely. With the radiation treatment she got many years of good sight out of that eye she wouldn't have had.
It is funny to me that at the time that treatment seemed so high tech. now it just sounds barbaric. cutting the eye open twice... so invasive. Now this article highlights something that may, in our lifetime be the new exciting experimental cancer treatment, and our kids (if they can still afford health care) will wonder how we endured such brutal treatment (I would suspect no cancer treatment in our lifetime will be FUN anyway)
I guess my cousin's situation has me in an extra thoughtful mood tonight.
I am not gonna feel too bad...the hubble was all a hoax anyway. just some scientists in a warehouse in the desert with crayons and black construction paper.
you make a good point that having a strong military may help people someday. I just think our priorities are a little strange sometimes. Anyhow... I really do hope you are right.
I am not surprised but this is kind of sad. Lets stop open ended research that may help people in the future... instead we will spend that money on killing people in the short term.
as great as this country is, it is sometimes frustrating to be an American
recently I started shopping at Fry's in Renton WA. I live north of seattle so it is a bit of a drive. Often one of my buddies will go with me which usually results in a bunch of stupid purchases we weren't planning on, but makes for a fun (although expensive) afternoon.
We wander around the huge store eventually losing track of each other. We are now only slightly embarrassed by having to call each others cell phones to find each other (although this took some getting used to). They have some really good deals especially considering the rebates. I started wondering if something was up a few months ago however when I bought an item, and a few days later when I went to mail the rebate in I noticed some fine print that said I should have mailed it sooner and it was no longer good.
now I have grown to hate fry's. yes I still shop there, but I am so frustrated when I have to wait 5 minutes while the cashier has to collect the stack of rebate forms for all the items I bought. Often these rebates are not even marked on a sign in the store so I am usually unaware they are even available.
I did all my christmas shopping there and was horrified at the stack of paperwork it generated. A seperate set of photo copies, forms to fill out, file folders to label and store in a "safe place" and stamped/addressed envelopes to buy, lick and stick. Some of the rebates were impossible to collect as I realized that I had given the UPC codes on some items away with the gift. The giftee's had usually thrown them away (of course) by the time I figured out which reciept went with which gift.
After cooling off for a couple months I found myself at fry's making a purchase again. Again there was a nice rebate available. This time I was absolutely determined to get my money. As I read the fine print I found another disturbing detail. On this particular rebate (and probably most) sending the required stuff to get the rebate meant that you could no longer make a warranty claim. The warranty of the item required the original UPC, and so did the rebate. So you were given the choice of $x back -OR- the warranty for the product.
what a world. my fingers are tired of typing. if you skipped the rest of my message I will sum it up for you: rebates suck, frys sucks, best buy sucks, and so do you, and everything else around us.
I worked at a fast food fish and chips resteraunt in the seattle area (rhymes with "divers"), and I am fairly certain we wouldn't have bothered to even change the oil. I mean it wouldn't have been the first melted plastic in there.
Its really cool to fry plastic forks until they are pliable. Then you sculpt them into a little standup art project and let them cool. The hot plastic can be handled by the calloused hands of the fry cook (typically me). Then your art can be displayed on the "order-up" shelf where the food is passed across. The district manager tends to get upset. I guess she doesn't support the arts. Our "displays" also got mixed reactions by our customers. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
you know, america does have a tendancy to suck and all. I mean with our social insecurity problems, unhealth care, and brutal style of diplomacy...
but then I read a story like this ( or at least the summary, I mean who RTFAs anyhow? ) and all I can think is: if I believed in god I would ask him to bless america. since I am not convinced about the god thing I will just chant (in a homer simpson tone) U.S.A.--U.S.A.--U.S.A.--U.S...
now I can go find all those people who said I should learn VB when I was in school, so that I could get one of the many "good jobs" working with it. I am sure you all heard that crap:
"OH, you want to be a programmer? I hear that there are lots of VB jobs! even though I am a useless toolbox that doesn't know anything about anything, I plan to give you advice anyway"
I will find them and and sing my new song:
you said I should
learn about VB
that it would help
find jobs for me
but I said I wouldn't
stoop so LOWWW
I TOLD YOU SO
I TOLD YOU SO

wow.. I am surprised what I started by just mentioning the word hunter in a post. I realize that I either hit the reply button on a fucking troll or a fucking moron. Unfortunately the troll/moron seems to hold a belief that I encounter quite often.
you asked if I am "You're proud to be a fucking murdering bastard ?"
the answer is no, I am not, because I am NOT a murdering bastard.
I am also not ashamed of being a hunter. If I was ashamed I wouldn't have posted a message about it where thousands of people could read it.
I hunt with my father and brother in the same canyons my family has hunted for 30+ years. We have a large camp of family and friends, and rarely kill anything. We have fun either way. When we do get a deer or elk that meat is shared among all of the families to provide many meals for the following 1-2 years. I will allow you your opinion if you use no animal products yourself, but if you eat meat and claim hunting is bad, that is where you lose me. The only difference between killing something in the wild and killing something on a farm is the amount of effort it takes, and the fact that the wild game has had the benefit of living its life in its natural habitat.
The entire food chain is based on animals eating animals. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with eating animals. I come from a long line of farmers, which means that I understand that meat does not come wrapped in a bun at a drive through window. Meat comes from real living, breathing, thinking animals. If you don't like that idea, maybe you better quit eating meat.
To me the really important part of hunting is spending time with my father and brother in one of the most beautiful areas of the planet, sharing dirty jokes around a campfire.
If you eat meat, or use animal products and have a problem with me spending time like that FUCK YOU.
I wish you all could see the smile this story brought to my weathered old face, and the way my sunken eyes sprang back to life. now excuse me, I have better "uses" for this bandwidth.
and I just wasted all my mod points on that great email database story! I would much rather have them back for this earth shattering news.
interesting reads...thanks.

well a lifetime of whacking to Jennifer Anniston's pokey nipples in "friends" reruns is a good start.
(to prevent blunders like the GFDL)
am I the only one, who after years of watching TV comercials for girlie products, reads GFDL as Gnu Feminine Deodorant License? I just can't get it out of my head, no matter what I do.
pfft. takes more than some AC thinking I am a karma whore to phase me. Its all true... don't care who believes me.

Once we're completely out of Iraq and Afganistan, hopefully they'll put the money back into long term research.
/me passes out while clicking submit
yeah. good point. I'll start holding my breath now........
