Firstly, they are going to be very very busy. Secondly, I think this program is less about securing the networks and more about getting some positive face-to-face interaction with the community. It is in opportunity for the sherifs to get to know the people they are sworn to protect and vise versa.

    2. We can send 3. They block all file types in email with a known extension. So you have to make up an extension and rename the file.
    4. Our screen savers come on after 1min and we must type our passwords to get back to the desktop.
    5. The virus scanner runs during peek office hours and brings our PC's performance back to the stone age.
    6. There is a web filter which is always blocking legit websites. It has an animation and it makes you feel like a criminal.
    7. User passwords expire in 90 days and must be the standard Alpha-numeric+non-alpha-numeric+long+never used before... which is actually fine except the AD admin password is something any dictionary attack could break in 1 second and it never changes.

I thought that the IT department was supposed to provide the IT services that the company employees need. Lately, the IT department is deciding what we need without asking for our input. If you go around their back to get your work done (use an anonymizer to access the web, P2P to send files to customer...) you can get fired for being a 'hacker'.

When the current satellites start falling down, we will send up more. In fact, those plans to 'weaponize' space are mostly a reaction to the realization of how important the GPS system is. It is a single point of failure and must be protected. Do you really think the armed forces are going to let the system fail due to neglect?

For most companies, this is not a problem. You know the business space the company operates in and can therefore make sure your next job operates in a different space.

But Microsoft is different... They (at least in their minds) compete with EVERYONE. Therefore, once you work for MS, you can't leave because no matter what area of business you decide to go into, they have their sights on it.

Of course, if all other companies buy into this logic then the problem will go away. I.E. you should be no more able to join Microsoft than you are able to leave it.

Here is a project I've been wanting to start for some time. There are two components: 1. A program that changes your wall paper every 1min, 10min, 1hr, etc... 2. A database of time-lapse outdoor scenes from around the world. Each scene is 24hrs in length with images captured at intervals of 10-30min. So that sitting in your office (with no windows) you can see what it is like to spend a day out side the taj mahal, or out in the american south west. This is done in pseudo real-time. I.E. if it's 10AM where you are, you see 10AM in the time-lapse. If you stay up all night, you can see what night time in the desert is like. There should be a community site with software and instructions so that users all around the world can take their regular digital cameras and a tripod + software and create their own time-scape scenes of the areas in which they live. These user scenes can be put on the web site for all to enjoy. Anyway, the real genius of this idea is that if it's done by a commercial company rather than open-source, some guy gets paid to travel around the world and spend 24hrs an all the places which are nice to look at. If anyone wants to start a company to do this, I'll volunteer for this job :)
