I think that the E61 would be much better since the E62 has no wifi. Symbian putty works pretty well though, and they can cram a lot of characters onto the screen in a tiny font that is surprisingly readable. I've only used it to restart a hung service here and there. No PKI login, though, and the VPN stuff on the phone seems like some serious black magic shit so I haven't been able to use that.
The slowness I mentioned is of the overall interface. It takes about 5 seconds to open a freaking SMS. It's pretty pathetic.
It's an interesting idea, but I definitely wouldn't see it as anything like a free lunch. It takes a lot of hard work (well, if you considering shmoozing hard work like me) to raise money. Lots of traveling and staying in hotels... You'd be basically a traveling salesman, selling the idea of yourself in office.
Thanks for the thoughtful response! I agree that she appears highly driven and ambitious. I'd also argue that women have to have those traits to make it anywhere in politics. She's definitely cast calculated votes as a senator where I'm pretty sure she felt one way but voted another way for political/image reasons, and that does turn me off. And the idea of having Bushes or Clintons as President for more than 20 years in a row *really* freaks me out.
All that said, I'll support her in the general election if she wins the primary because I think she'll be a much better president than McCain. Clinton's policies are reasonable and pragmatic (though not as progressive as would be my ideal). McCain has mostly toed the party line for the last 8 years and supported most of GWB's *crazy* policies, and his talk about Ira(q|n) is terrifying. "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"!? WTF? I used to like and respect the guy, but he's now doing just as much pandering and flip-flopping as anyone.
Why do you dislike Hillary so strongly? I'm genuinely curious. I know there's a lot of folks who hate her, but I don't ever hear it logically explained. I imagine there has to be a pretty strong argument for why you'd support Obama over McCain but McCain over Clinton when Obama and Clinton's policies are so closely aligned and so dramatically different than McCain's.
When I was in high school I performed in a summer play of The Hobbit at a local park. I was Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the dwarves... it was a blast! It all took place outside, and we had sets built at various places in the park. Between scenes the audience would journey (walk) with us from place to place.
My friends in the crew built a 12 foot tall dragon with a wooden skeleton and paper-mache exterior. In the last scene the dragon reared up and I got to stab it in the belly, releasing several gallons of gloppy green blood. Man, that was fun!
I converted a fairly large db (~15 million rows in 100+ tables) from MS SQL Server to postgres using EMS's PostgreSQL Data Pump software. It's not free, but it's cheap, and saves you a LOT of trouble. You can find it at http://www.sqlmanager.net/products/postgresql/data pump.
We still had to re-write all of our stored procs as postgresql functions, but that was a pretty good learning experience and enabled us to trim some serious fat as well.
Check out the Essential CVS book from O'Reilly: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/cvs/. It's concise and told me almost all I needed to know to manage my company's first CVS server for the last two years.
Bonsai is the best tool I've seen for digging through CVS's not-so-friendly history output. It's web-based, and provides a nice interface for creating pointed queries to see who did what and when. The setup is a little bit arcane, but once you've got it going, it's very handy to have in your toolbox.
After getting MoveOn.org's email yesterday, I called CBS NYC yesterday to voice my disappointment in their judgement, but now that I'm looking into the issue, it's not black-and-white.
The MoveOn email and web site front page say that CBS will be airing ads from the White House. What they don't say is that the ads are from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Now, while I'm no fan of ONDCP, I wouldn't say that their anti-drug ad is likely to be a political one.
The question is: why is CBS refusing MoveOn's ad. One of the posters below says "No political ads have ever been aired during the Superbowl". If that's true, CBS is just continuing the precedent, not displaying a double standard.
This Applescript plugin for iTunes is really nice. It installs LAME and is very easy to use (just select it from the iTunes script menu). However, it will only allow you to rip one CD at a time per processor, so unless he's got a dualie, this won't help the original poster.
Oh, man. Alley Cat... I can't believe you mentioned that game! I also can't believe that I remember it. That was such an arcade-y game, and it was pretty amazing to play it on my IBM PCjr.
People in Middle America watch TV... a lot of it. Just wait until the debates. Dean is going to rip Dubya a new one. If you've seen Dean on TV, you've seen that he's straightforward and unreserved in his discussions. He's also extremely likeable, unlike Al "Stiffy Stifferson" Gore. If Dean gets a chance to debate Dubya, Bush is going to look like the great stinking idiot (not to mention criminal) that he is. I'll personally be surprised if Bush's campaign actually lets him debate Dean.
All that said, let me say that I'd pick Dennis Kucinich over Dean any day. He's the only one of the Dems who is a real fighter for the people. However, I know that he could never be elected, because he's just not warm and fuzzy.
I'm using a 4 year old PowerMac G4 400 as my primary machine at my web programming job. My 1.7 GHz Win2k PC sits next to the Mac and sees far less use. Even though Macs cost more than x86 boxes, they make up for it in terms of longevity, not to mention resale value. This 4 year old Mac I'm posting from has a resale value of $500 or $600 dollars.
The simplest way to put it is that Macs work better and longer than any other system I've worked with. Windows is easy to use, but absurdly unstable. Linux is very stable, but a major pain in the ass to use. I use Win2k, Mandrake 9, and OS X, but I wish I could just use OS X all the time. Trouble is, I can't afford a decent Mac to replace my home dual-boot PC!
The point is that PanIP is targeting small companies who don't have the financial resources to defend themselves from a lawsuit in another state. PanIP then settles with the small company for $5,000 or so. It's total extortion, and everyone at PanIP should be locked up.

Here's the letter that I sent. If you're going to copy it, please make sure you check the [noted]parts first.
Dear [Mr || Ms]. [CONGRESSMAN LAST NAME], I'm writing because I am deeply concerned about Senator Fritz Hollings' proposed Security Systems Standards and Certification Act (SSSCA). I realise that this legislation has not yet (and hopefully will not) make it to the [House || Senate] floor, but I feel that it is extremely important for America's legislators to understand how the SSSCA would adversely affect the rights of all Americans.
The SSSCA would mandate that all computers (and arguably calculators, mobile phones, car stereos, etc.) have built-in copyright protection software. The entertainment industries (notably the MPAA and RIAA) that are pushing this legislation forward are seeking special protection for their outdated and endangered business models. Giving them this protection would effectively take away the fair use priveleges that American consumers have enjoyed for decades. For example, I have bought several albums in digital formats online, which I have then transferred to CD for use in my car, CD-walkman, etc. With the SSSCA, I could not do this, and I would be forced to sit in front of my computer to enjoy the music that I paid for.
The entertainment industry is worried about their future prospects, and they should be. However, the problems that they face have not come about because of criminal copyright enfringement, but rather through their own unwillingness to create new business models that are appropriate for today's digital world. Instead of rethinking and updating their methods and practices, they have chosen to paint their loyal customers as criminals.
Copyright exists to ensure that society has literature, movies, and music by protecting the rights of artists who create these valuable artistic forms. This noble ideal has been increasingly bastardized by the profiteers in the entertainment industry, who make far more money than the artists whose interests they claim to represent. I urge you to do everything in your power to defeat the SSSCA. Please be assured that any congressman who votes for this legislation will not have my support in the future.
Other than a couple of odd attributes in the table tag (cool, usegridx, showgridx, etc), this page looks pretty much like vanilla HTML. Any thought on why some browsers can't see the pics?
I know this sounds odd if you haven't played it, but the Virtua Tennis series for the Dreamcast is really, really fun. It's fast-paced, has an easy learning curve, and has very good, realistic graphics.
The latest version has female players for the first time, and although there's no Anna Kournikova (presumably because they couldn't strike a royalty deal with her), the Williams sisters definitely satisfy my babe requirements.:-)
There's also a lot of fun training modes, so you can improve your self-designed players' stats.
Maybe I'm missing something, but what exactly are people going to sue MS for? When you buy a computer with Windows pre-installed, it's not like they tell you "This system will work perfectly, and will never crash."
2. Does anyone know what the color depth of the screen is? I'm assuming that it's 8-bit, because Sony would be flaunting the color depth if it were 16-bit. I've run the fish over all of the pages on Sony's PEG-N700C site, and I can't find any mention of the color depth at all. I just find it really hard to believe that Sony would release an 8-bit color screen when Handspring has had 16-bit color for months.
FYI, Phish Tickets-by-mail only distributes a small number of tickets for each show, so the mail-order crowd isn't the reason you can't get your tickets.
However, Tickets-by-mail is a much more reliable way to get your tix than through TicketBastard. And even though you have to deal with getting money orders and fill out forms that may challenge the perpetually stoned among us, it's waaaay less stressful than hitting "redial" over and over and over and over, only to hear busy signals or that @(*&#$%#&ing message "There are no circuits availble. Please try again later."
"Web-whacking" software (programs that act like a spider-bot) won't be able to mirror most useful web sites. Most sites have database backends, and the HTML is built on-the-fly by scripts or servlets that the browser can never see. For these reasons, mirroring can't possibly be done with either
a) exploiting multiple security holes in the web server/database server/firewall/whatever else
OR
b) carefully planning and implementing a customized mirroring scheme with the cooperation of the site maintainers/hosters.
I don't know PHP, but here's a simple, language-independant solution to your problem:
Create an include file that defines an array (someArrayOfText) for each piece of multilingual text. Make element 0 the english text, 1 german, 2 spanish, etc. Use a cookie to store the user's language preference (intLanguage = someInteger).
Finally, in the code, display someArrayOfText[intLanguageFromCookie] instead of flat text.
This is not a great technique for very big sites, but for an intranet or small public web site, it involves the least overhead. It also allows all of your translation to be done in one place.
Well, I can't say that my experiences have been as bad as Malor's, but I can certainly say that Arcserve bites. I'd rather write my own DLT driver than have to deal with it regularly.
I can't believe that a program with such a twisted, unnavigable UI could be become the industry standard. ArcserveIT is hunk of crap. Stay away...
