"intelligent" enought to "remember large amounts of information".
that sounds like a robot, not an intelligent person. intelligent people can figure things out and remember critical information. rote memorization doesn't have much to do with intelligence.
S&M is not illegal. if I want to get hurt when I'm naked, that's my own fucking responsibility. (pun intended). I think that pictures of people engaging in S&M sex are appropriate.
If you don't, don't look at them. You've got the choice - don't buy it, don't read it, and don't say your opinion is right.
I don't understand why people keep tossing around the bill of rights here - I don't see how we can expect a 200+ year old document to be superior to common sense and a little bit of intelligence. sure, maybe the first amendment doesn't specifically give us the right to look at pictures of people fucking, but since when do I need an old piece of paper written upon by dead people to GIVE me a right to do something with my own eyes?
I think it's pretty cool that we work in an industry that basically supports every other industry to an increasing degree AND pays tons more than your average career choice yet just because a few of us dress funny and can't hold a conversation, the industry is not becoming instaneously flooded with golddiggers.
I say "yay for the shortage of qualified tech people; more for us."
don't be retarded. there are plenty of good looking, slick programmers that code just as well as you think you do. open your eyes (maybe your mind too.) pigeonholing mainstreamly "cool" people is no better than pigeonholing funny looking geeks. I personally find it amusing that someone could claim to code better than someone else just beacuse they're uglier and can't get girls.
... and I'm hearing what youre saying. by "full of [closed and empty minds]" I didn't mean to imply everyone was stupid or closed minded - I meant full as in "this store is full of groceries"; obviously it's not FULL, but there certainly are a lot of groceries.
likewise, by calling this story classic slashdot anti-microsoft conspiracy trash, I didn't mean everything on slashdot is trash, because it isnt. I just meant that there exists here a large amount of antimicrosoft conspiracy trash, and this is some of it.
I realize theres interesting stuff/people here, and obviously thats why I read here and post occasionally. I said what I said so that people would know that I'm against what I was replying to.
Personally I';m surprised I'm being moderated up; more proof that those who are smart enough to realize that what they are saying is inflammatory are smart enough to put some comment into their flames.:D
I dunno, critisize my tone if you like, I'm a big boy and I can take it. I just thought I'd clarify my tone because I think you think I'm (slightly) more of an ass than I actually am. heh.
classic anti-microsoft conspiracy slashdot trash. I'm sure I'll get moderated down for this, but who really needs positive karma in a microcosm full of minds that run the gamut from "closed" to "empty"? one time I ordered a whole bunch of computer parts online which UPS kindly misdelivered to some building on 29th st in nyc. as soon as their tracking system notified me of the snafu, I notified UPS - they told me that they could send someone over the next day to try and pick it up, and since that wasn't good enough for Mr. I-Need-It-Now-Bossman, I called my helpful NYPD who said they'd be more than happy to escort me over to pick up my stuff. the NYPD want to help you if youre a NYC resident (unless you're hatian, in which case I guess they just want to anally molest you). let's not get our panties in knots because they helped microsoft.
OK, lets take this real slow for those of you in the back of the room:
1. you have a job 2. you get hurt on the job 3. if your employer is negligent, you prove it in a court and get a hefty cash award
You have now been injured and then compensated by your employer. You have 3 choices:
1. go back to work and hope you dont get hurt again 2. go back to work and whine about how conditions are shitty and more people like you are going to get hurt and maybe you'll even get hurt again and we should change policy around here and why is my mouse making my hand hurt and why are these lights so bright and if they dont reconfigure my workstation I'm going to sue again 3. QUIT, FIND A JOB WHERE YOU WONT INJURE YOURSELF ANYMORE.
(note, I capitalized the correct answer to help you figure out what's going on.)
explanation/answer key:
if you go back to work and dont complain, nothing will change.
if you go back to work and complain and generally be a nuisance; if you invoke these laws to improve the environment, then perhaps the environment will get better.
if you quit, the company will be FORCED to notice the reasons for you quitting and the fact that you are no longer there. they can rehire some new employee to replace you, but if things are that bad, he'll quit too. the employer will have to make some changes in the environment or he will not be able to retain any employees.
did you notice that the outcome is essentially the same in situations 2 and 3? basically, the only differences in these two situations is that in situation 3, the employee had to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS SITUATION and TAKE ACTION.
so, I repeat:
Why in the world would you want to continue a job as a typist when you have CTS? That's just plain stupid.
well, if it's aimed at workplaces that are unsafe, thats cool, but I just dont think it's real sane to come up with a law that ends up regulating every company in america.
I'm not opposed to companies having good (or great) conditions for their employees. I work for a company that has awesome working conditions. but we're that way not because we're tryign to follow every law that comes down the pike regardign employee conditions, but because we dont anyone to quit because it's unpleasant or painful to work.
the answer to every problem is not "Pass more laws." maybe if the business sector was allowed to operate freely AND people were smart enough to voice their opinions by no longer allowing a company to use their labor to profit (ie, QUIT), then working conditions would get better.
how am I stupid? because I think it should be the responsibility of the worker to find suitable, safe and comfortable employment?
because I think it should be the responsibility of the employer to WANT to provide a good environment for their workers so that their workers dont all quit and go work somewhere better?
because I think that an employee has a responsibility to actively pursue a good situation for himself, instead of sitting back and expecting the federal government to regulate away all his troubles?
because I think that a situation where businesses are free to compete as they see fit is better than a situation where businesses hands are tied by a government that reacts to studies that it comissioned that arent even FINISHED?
if you're going to sit there on the other side of your little Anonymous Coward shield and call me stupid, you better at least be able to justify it. my opinions are the result of experience and reflection, and you respond to them with an infantile insult.
I'd like to know what obligates the employer to change his business procedures to accomodate physically unfit employees. Sure, if your business environment is unsafe or harmful to the employee, but really now, if you dont like it, quit and find another job. Companies would be fighting one another tooth and nail to provide an awesome work environment if people who had bad work environments quit and looked for another job.
Theres no reason an employer should have to provide special workstations for employees who have a problem typing all day long. Why in the world would you want to continue a job as a typist when you have CTS? That's just plain stupid.
it's pretty unfortunate that people immediately flip out over the notion of a piece of software that you buy connecting over the Internet to a machine run by the people that put the software out in order to transfer a little bit of information about the configuration of the software and the machine it's running on. it sure would be great if JC could simply insert a couple lines of code into the linux and windows bins of q3 that told iD exactly how many of each copy of the software were running on machines connected to the internet.
I suppose the reason noone likes this is because the code that does the sending-of-information could send ANY info (including your private files) to iD since it would be closed source.
but what if it wasnt? what if there was a little utility that ran as part of the installation process - something that ran automatically and just gave you a little heads up when it executed (I am now sending your choice of operating systems, your total amount of RAM and your video card type to such and such an IP)...
and then just include the couple hundred lines of source on the CD too. dont even open source it if you dont want to - just provide the source so everyone whos so paranoid can verify that its doing what it says its doing.
this would take approximately 5 minutes to code and a little while to integrate into the install process. iD, other software houses - I know someone at these companies reads slashdot - this would be a good idea.
if you dont like debian, dont use it. this is why we have fourteen thousand linux distributions. I'm quite certain you can track one down that doesnt get your panties all in a knot.
if the maintainer of a distribution wants to change the distribution, and if users of the distribution are allowed to use other distributions, there is no problem at all. I see no way to compare this to "OH WHAT IF MICROSOFT DID THIS".
the Beastie Boys have, according to CNN, a system whereby their fans can create a custom "greatest hits" CD by mixing and matching old bboys tracks at their website - the resultant cd would then be burned and shipped to the user.
"intelligent" enought to "remember large amounts of information".
that sounds like a robot, not an intelligent person. intelligent people can figure things out and remember critical information. rote memorization doesn't have much to do with intelligence.
yeah, except that you're not allowed to short IPOs. nice try.
its a function of the server, not the client.

I thought that /. stopped linking to amazon - I seem to remember seeing Fatbrain links in most of the book reviews and whatnot lately.
Wargames was based on Kevin Mitnick's exploits? Probably not.

yeah, I completely agree. this type of thing is why I put up with interviews with JP. lets have more of this in the future. :D
"Shifting my emphasis from lawyer to professor of economics, laissez-faire approaches do *not* tolerate monopolies, but instead find them repugnant."
:D
good god. how do people tolerate being in school for this long?
either this laptop has a hundred serial ports or this is going to be a _really_ long party.
reboot!

patents are patently stupid.
_remember_ sccs? I had the displeasure of using it quite intensively for a while when I worked at Sun. guh.
:D
anyway, 8's as good a number as anything else, I was just curious.
