But if you can't put it to use the drugs lose their "fun" value really quickly. And yeah, when I was in college those didn't exist. We had other ones to experiment with, but not the scripts like today's generation.
The problem you point at is addressed by Socrates (could be Plato also, it's unknown what he interjects as "Socrates" in the works since Socrates refused to write anything down.). The real issue is that there is a difference between wisdom and knowledge.
As people gain knowledge, they tend to become "cocky" failing to realize how that knowledge can truly be used. Wisdom comes with time and experience using the knowledge gained.
When I was in Calculus I thought I was pretty smart. All that math could not have flown a ship to the moon however. Even if I could plot trajectories, I lacked way to much other knowledge to perform the task. But I would not have told you so, I was proud of the knowledge I had and how well I could perform the tasks. I did not realize how ignorant I was until much later, and it took even longer for me to admit my ignorance.
Luckily I was never the "typical" arrogant college prick. I was way to busy with the women to worry about whether or not my math peen was as big as some other nerds.
Yes, the market does hate MS phones. The same way they hate Blackberry phones. The sales numbers from the first release were bullshit, and it was reported on a few days after the "huge buzz (according to Microsoft and paid media)". The numbers they reported were numbers they "sold" to factories that hold the devices prior to purchase, and not what was sold to consumers.
Developers have bitched since Microsoft released the APIs for WP8, apps suck, controls suck, it's too expensive, etc... So developers are not touching the Phone either. In fact the/. article referenced fart machines as the best application that could be created for the phone, which was validated by them having nearly 30 on the store compared to a dozen or so flash light applications. I just read another article a week ago where a development team just said "fuck-it" to developing even after dumping 50K in to MS licensing.
Look, I'm sure it's a great platform.. for someone.. I work with a fan-boi that has one. He thinks it's great, but he can't do anything with it. Our T&M apps that run in Droid and IOS won't run in Win Phone, mail does not work, so if all you do with your phone is need a "phone" and "camera" I guess it's fine.
And me implying that the person who wrote the article is biased, makes me biased? Did you RTFA? It's worded like WinPhone was uber awesome, and because Apple and Google are big meanies it will make Nokia fail. If the article is biased, how would you expect me to react.. like I didn't read the fucking thing?
Now, am I anti-Microsoft? That's a loaded question. I never had a Zune, and thought it was a failure (damn, I was correct). I never had an X-Box, and refuse to get one. I won't be buying a Windows Phone either. I use MS products at work, some are okay. I think Visio was much better before MS bought them, but that's not an unpopular point of view. I use Office and despise the 2010 ribbons and bullshit like "font auto-preview" that makes doing something so simple take a long time. Excel is still a good app, but there again the ribbons make it inefficient.
I agree with you that Symbian needed to die, honestly I do. But you make the real point in your next paragraph. They should not have locked themselves in to Windows Phone. This put them in the exact same position they were in with Symbian.. except it was not "their" OS.
If they went with 2 OSes it would have made sense, but what they did was not logical.. and I think someone got a hell of a bonus check to cut that deal.. and it was not Nokia paying the Bonus..
If all you plan to do is camp where you are, and you don't see a need to code.. well good for you. I'd still recommend knowing at least the basics since it can, and more often than not does, improve your ability to perform your job. I use scripts all the time, but then again I'm not an average system admin. Let me give you a few examples.
I wrote a script for resetting LDAP passwords for Unix, since most Unix admins don't understand LDAP. It had to meet NISPOM compliance, randomly generate secure passwords, inventory LDAP to ensure the user exists, poll People Soft to ensure the employee was valid, etc.. It was a cool little project that took me about a week. However when it was done our level 1 support could reset passwords for users, saving time in the long run for everyone else (including myself). They still use the same code to reset passwords, and I wrote the utility 7 years ago.
That little project, since I wrote it modular, was expanded to full user and group management. Need to add a user, type in a badge number and answer a couple basic questions. Again, level 1 could add users and groups to Unix LDAP without issue. 6+ years later, they still use those too.
Analysis applications often have countless requirements for Engineers to run jobs. I wrote wrappers for everything from MSC software to PAM CRASH. wrappers were simple to modify for new versions and again those are being used some 10 years after I wrote them.
Need to validate users from disparate systems, write a script. Need to check for compiler functionality, write some basic C code. If you can't get a simple program to compile, then neither will your users. In my opinion, a sign of the best administrators are that they test and think things through.
Coding can make your job much easier, as well as those around you. It's all about what you can innovate, then how you innovate a solution. I use scripting much more than C, but sometimes more complex problems come with C. Testing things like memory with an active OS are simple in C, why reboot and wait for a vendor disk?
Like I started with, it may be something you don't have to do now. However, to make yourself more valuable I'd highly recommend it.
Oh come now, who wrote this crud a Microsoft Marketing rep? The market hates MS phones, and it showed after the first what.. 2 were released and sales of Nokia devices plummeted to single digits? Fan bois would buy it, but hell they also bought a Zune. bah...
Look, the market has really 2 devices they are choosing from. If they want lock-in, they to with Apple. If they want cutting edge they go with a Droid. Everyone, and I mean everyone advised against dumping Symbian for another lock-in phone OS in Windows Phone. Those same people saw what happened to Blackberry, which was an exceptional OS and fully mature. It died a painful death, simply because of the 2 choices I started with.
The only reason this deal ever went through is because.... well fuck it I'll be blunt.. look who Nokia hired to captain the ship..
In this case "off" means "you're allowed to track me". Set it to "on" if you want to explicitly limit advertiser's activities.
I'm glad Apple provides this, and it's a nice differentiator for them since Google needs to track users to maintain their profits while Apple just wants to sell you devices.
Hahahaha, sorry but I had to laugh. Apple is no different than Google in regards to tracking since it boils down to revenue for both of them. You make it sound like Apple generates no revenue from the Ads or does not care about ad revenue. I hate to break the news to you, but there is no innocence here.
Now does Apple "also" generate revenue from hardware and such? Sure, but at least be honest. If they had no interest in the ad revenue, they would not have the software built in to track you. Well, I guess you could blame try to put 100% of the blame on Big Brother.. but that is not honest.
Get you started on FOSS? Do you know what FOSS is? Go get a clue, seriously. Linux for example is the most used operating system in the world for server platforms. Apache (FOSS) is the most used web server, and the list could go on and on. You speak from ignorant bias. Your IE would have nothing to browse without free software. And while you receive malware with your IE, us Unix guys laugh as we browse the same sites in FOSS web browsers on FOSS operating systems and never worry about malware.
Get you started... Pfft I wave and smile as you crash...:)
Yeah, go ahead and try to hire anyone under 16for a job. Ever read the work restrictions for a minor? While the age restriction is true, the amount of hour, allowed times to work, etc... Make it so difficult that it rarely happens (legally anyway).
Just to be clear, I am arguing the point presented by the person I replied to who stated ~everything in math is either true or false~. That statement is not true (not sure if you were the AC or not).
While there most surely are very true and false aspects of math, the "everything" is an invalid qualifier. This is easiest seen in the definition of "Theorem" where we have repeatable results but most often "proof" is impossible (for any number of reasons). Since a theorem has a potential of being false it is not possible to claim it's "true". If it was provable, it would no longer be a "Theorem" but a "Proof".
Pi is a ratio constant, and yes an irrational number. I was using the term "real" literally. We have approximated Pi quite far, but the actual value is a ratio so it can never be truly expressed as Pi. It can only be truly expressed as the ratio of C / r^2.
I do have an advanced degree in mathematics, so understand mathematics very well. Expressing English properly on all occasions is another story.. I do try, however English has limitations (as do all languages) especially when context is misinterpreted by the reader.
You are wrong on numerous levels. I'm guessing that you forgot that Pi is not a real number, it's an estimation. You seem to have forgotten what a "Theorem" is as well and hell, you used the word!. Wtf? There are numerous types of "Math" that we simply can not prove true or untrue. We still use them, because to the best of our knowledge things work in a specific way.
Since the above is true, Math "is" science. Your second statement in bold is a fallacy so just plain old wrong. No wonder you posted anonymously.
'Patents are supposed to encourage innovation and we're starting to be in a world where they might start to stifle innovation.
"Might" start to stifle innovation? Has this person not been alive in the same country as the rest of us for the last two decades? From the Shopping Cart on web servers to Nest, the examples of innovation being stifled are extremely obvious and simple to find. I personally would not start up a business in this environment, and most of my friends are the same way. Think tanks dumping patents in to the system without an invention have ensured that even if you have a brilliant idea, someone has a patent already.
While I agree with his point that we must have patent reform, I wonder what planet he is coming from to have just noticed that it "might" be a problem. Most of us in technical jobs have been screaming for reform going on 20 years now. yeah, I'm also in a bit of a sarcastic mood...
Oh, and just in case there is confusion the "ignorant" comment was not directed at you, but the AC you replied to. Apologies for not being very clear in my first post.
Bah, you beat me to the bigot bashing. It's really a shame that so many people are too ignorant to realize that it's not "democrat" vs. "republican" and has not been for over thirty years.
First, I never stated violence was the only answer. If you believe I did then you should really learn how to read (and comprehend what you read). In fact in both posts, I stated very clearly that it's normally not the answer. Go back and read the history for yourself, I find it silly to quote something that is in the exact same thread.
I stated that on rare occasions, it is the best form of justice. Perhaps you should learn the difference between justice and punishment before you reply again. Learning is hard, but I'll point you to a great resource. "The Republic" by Plato. I can recommend the Cambridge translation as well.
Lastly, I'll accuse you of being completely blind to your own ignorance. I come to that conclusion based on your words "kill or be killed" as you summarize all acts of a physical nature in societal law. People expressing their first amendment rights are frequently hit by police with batons and shields. This to you is fine? This is how the law operates in the real world. The world is not always pretty, but this is reality.
I believe _you_ are the ignorant one here, attempting to paint the world in an exactly black and white fashion. The world operates in numerous colors, and your deficiency in realizing such is sad though not surprising. It's been brainwashed in to you, but I can assure you that it's not reality.
Sometimes, though not often, corporal punishment is the _only_ way to get a message across to someone.
Look, I'm sure you don't believe corporal punishment is ever required. The best example is with children, though not the only example. Perhaps you believe that you have a child that never refused their other forms of punishment or never did anything wrong. The reality is that children will test boundaries and tell you "no" refusing other forms of punishment. It's their job as children, it's how they grow up and learn what boundaries are. You can go with option A and teach them the boundaries, or go with option B and let them have a free for all making them egocentric social degenerates. Of course you can use option C and medicate the shit out of them taking away their ability to learn and become functional mature members of society as many people do today.
Kids grow up very well using option A, and historically it's not harmful (don't mistake a swat on the ass with abuse, there is a big big difference). If all other forms of punishment are refused, a swat on the fanny is all it takes to get them to choose better forms of punishment in the future.
Stop trying to paint a world full of so many colors in a simple black and white. It does not work.
Since you will probably "but.. but.. but.." the reason for a pop in the mouth is not simply an issue of might makes right. You are failing to realize both the psychological impact as well as the chemical reactions that occur during the act for both the perpetrator and recipient. Since the chemistry goes way beyond what I'm willing to type here, lets look at the simple psychological impact. Using my previous example of the guy harassing the girl.. why would he not do so in a public forum? Obviously the implication that he would go to jail, so he fears punishment correct? What is the impact of a few guys punching him a few times? Obviously he would realize that he can't do what ever he wants, and would have fear about repeating those actions. The same as the fear that prevents him from doing things publicly where he could be prosecuted.
So again, it's occasionally the only answer. Would it be better to have him found guilty in court? Of course, but the lack of evidence does not make him innocent does it? And if he is known to society to be a harmful person, society needs to keep tabs on him and make sure society is safe.
Lastly, to your might-makes-right statement.. what the hell do you think enforcing any law is? If I rob a bank, the cops (might) arrest me and take me to court correct? Then I'm locked in jail (might) and serving my punishment. You used a poor prefixing statement since enforcing laws is _always_ might. If you are assuming that everyone that has been, is being, or will be punished by society is "incorrect" you are extremely gullible.
Ahh, the bliss of ignorance. You do understand the social solutions to problems have existed very intentionally for thousands of years correct? Why would that be? Why would Socrates and Plato say those things are needed for a successful Republic?
The courts don't have time, nor is it possible to legislate social behavior all of the time. Society does have the time, and is the "normal". Does this mean that I advocate dueling or shooting someone when out of line socially? No, that would be illegal. But a punch in the mouth goes a long way in reminding someone about social behavior. And long ago, but not that long ago, courts would be extremely lenient on assault cases where a person was convicted of assaulting someone that spit on an old lady or cussed out a waitress that was not happy with their verbal sexual advances (and sometimes just toss out the case).
A fat lip goes a long way toward getting an apology and different behavior from someone acting out of the societal normal. It is not always the answer and should not be the "normal", but in some cases it's the best form of justice.
Sounds like we agree. The root issue, is that you are joined to a group without your knowledge. That is such a blatant security hole, it can not possibly be accidental. Seriously, nobody is 'that' ignorant. Even if it was one dumb ass coder, don't you think that the team implementing "groups" would have had someone that realized the security problem?
This is a choice by Facebook which once again screws over users (I won't use the term customers, since facebook also has numerous government agencies as customers). As I mentioned earlier, I really hope this one brings up a class action law suit and makes those two teens a good sum of money. Can't remove the harm done, but should make their lives easier for a while at least. I also hope it becomes very public, and people start abandoning the piece of shit site. Unfortunately, media will be paid not to discuss the issue and if there is a class action law suit it will be settled out of court so that people are kept in the dark.
The only time these two individuals ever did anything related to the chain of events was when they friended, or accepted a friend request, from this choir group in the first place. If you're saying that they shouldn't have done that unless they were 'ready and willing' to own, that's fine.
Look, I'm not sure you realize how it works. If someone sends you an invite to a group, you are added to the group. There is no "friending" involved, and there is no control by the recipient of the invite to the group.
How do I know that? Well a few weeks ago, someone sent me an invite to a group. I received the email, but had no interest. In fact I replied to the person's personal email and said "thanks, but no thanks. I don't Facebook, I log in to my account maybe 1 time a week to see the page and what relatives were up to. Two days later, I happened to log in to facebook, and low and behold I'm being spammed by this group on my wall. I never agreed, never "friended" anyone, I was simply notified that I was invited. Magically I'm in that group without any action on my part, and had to remove myself from the group without ever joining.
These teens had the same thing happen. This is a Facebook security issue and has nothing to do with those two teens. In fact, I hope it opens up a nice fat class action case against them and marks the piece of shit that is facebook.
False analogy. Using DNA as evidence linking someone to crime is similar to a finger print (physical) or having witnesses to a crime. Using DNA to determine future crimes is more equivalent to claiming tarot cards can be used to determine future criminals.
Ummm, then we should also lock up anarchists, communists, nationalists, racist, Christians, Muslims, Jews, well, all religious people, atheists and quite a few others, because all of these ideologies/religions caused genocide at some point in the past.
False dichotomy in the premise. In the latter portion, let me ask a question. Why is it illegal to teach, sell, or hold Nazi teachings and ideology in Germany? Are you saying Germany is not correct in doing so? Outside of Germany, the laws are slightly different. However, if I was to start teaching Nazi principles in any country, namely the advocating death to all Jews would I be put in jail? I can tell you that in the US, I may be able to get away with it. At the same time, I would be on terrorist watch lists and have numerous 3 letter Government agencies watching me 24/7 and probably trying to set me up to be arrested. We (Society) recognize the danger in allowing such teachings and at least isolate those people, but also try to keep their teachings away from the general public.
Hell, we should start from locking up people who suggest locking up scientist and people having different opinions, because locking up people for such reasons is almost always the beginning for any totalitarian and terror regime.
Again, you start with a false dichotomy. You are comparing a difference in opinion with teaching people that genocide is warranted. I'm really sorry that you claim not to understand the difference. We are not talking about a public paper stating "Scientists think the sky is blue", we are talking about a public paper stating that whole races are inferior to other races to the detriment of society. This is much worse than what Hitler's party taught. It's not just Jews that at risk of being labelled a detriment, but anything that we can test for with DNA that someone cares to label as socially inferior.
They are not simply expressing ideas, they are spreading propaganda supporting a eugenics agenda. It should be alarming that the US and UK have three times in as many months came out with three different methods of propagating eugenics. Perhaps you believe you won't be a victim so simply don't care, either ignoring or being ignorant of history.
Did you read TFA? I'm thinking you are asking me to relieve yourself from guilt.
In an open letter, the group said that it is worried about the political implications of the economists’ work: “the suggestion that an ideal level of genetic variation could foster economic growth and could even be engineered has the potential to be misused with frightening consequences to justify indefensible practices such as ethnic cleansing or genocide,” it said.
Naw, hell we have never ever had educated functional societies. History has never recorded anything for us to review, it's all just delusion based just like Carnegie Melon and Rockefeller tell us right?
Sarcasm aside, there is a tremendous amount of research backing my statements. If what I stated was false, we would never have seen a successful black person in America. It would have been impossible, because social opportunity and education would have no bearing on their abilities to move within society. We could say the same about Asians, especially the early Chinese who were not educated in China before migrating.
This statement you made is just plain foolishness. "Want to throw out decades of research that support genetic influence of behavior on such diverse issues as alcoholism, personality disorders, etc..." Sounds like someone is a bigot, and would much rather believe propaganda than understand the facts. Sure sure, alcohol is an addiction we have never seen in any society until recently right? It has to be only based on DNA, and nothing to do with society right? Wrong! Good to see the propaganda is working so my tax dollars are not completely wasted, but perhaps you should go investigate who defines those personality disorders you claim to be influenced by DNA. How about you read symptoms of each alleged disorder.
Let me be very clear regarding the point above. I do believe that mental problems exist. What I take issue with is you painting everything with a single brush, and neglecting the fact that society often plays a role in creating the mental problems. Much more than DNA which is often cited as a single cause when numerous factors including society are possible candidates. There is a nice Hegelian effect to defining new "disorders" and prescribing magic treatments for those "disorders". It's fucked up a whole generation of kids thanks to treatment for "disorders" that until 20 years ago were called "play time" and "puberty". Not every kid in the US has ADHD, but every doctor sure will prescribe you some meds for it, and in fact schools demand it when kids are seen as "over active".
Your last statement is extremely absurd, so you are correct with your last line (though your target was off). Are you really foolish enough to believe that education determines muscle mass? Society actually plays a role, but it's on such a fine level that it's not worth discussing with someone that refutes basic logic with absurd statements like you made.
But if you can't put it to use the drugs lose their "fun" value really quickly. And yeah, when I was in college those didn't exist. We had other ones to experiment with, but not the scripts like today's generation.

Huh?
For advocating and spreading propaganda supporting eugenics, society should be demanding they be locked up.
