I still got an old laptop a pentium 133 MMX that still run fine except the battery but that's the issue for every laptop battery.
It still serve as a web server and run fine for its purpose.
Of course it won't run the power hungry programs of today.
And an old 386 'transportable' computer that not switched on anymore except of rare occasion ( too obsolete ). And my father got an old ultra portable libretto ( xt compatible / BW screen / custom dos )
today's computer are less reliable because of the power used, generated heat that put a lot of stress and of course are used by people that expect that their laptop would be as resistant as their portable CD player!
I agree that apple laptop lasts more than their pc counterpart, but from my point of view when comparing with the same price range of laptop, apple computer are treated with more care than their x86 peer, from my point of view only sony vaio laptop were treated with the same care because the were bought by the same category of people ( still from my point of view ). Of course x86 laptop suffer more from ( *cough * ) windows unreliability/unsecurity than hardware failure ( of course every laptop owner than are supposed to be connected to a secured network are runned with administrator account with only a few exception ).
End of life cycle will be reached for windows NT4 windows 2000 as they will be no longer provided in the msdn CDs.
and for my 2cents IE helped much to clean the pluging nightmare that we (almost ?) all know from netscape 4, as the plugin market is a little more stable (java/flash). Dropping IE support for mac is neither a good or a bad thing for mac users, because mostly the adverage user don't care at all as long as they can check their webmmail, search on google, you name it...
but seeing the reaction of most mac users here, we can extrapolate on Office (already done), and for adobe products, as apple does more and more to intefere with adobe lineup and adobe see their revenue from the mac platform decline and the costs getting higher ( transition on OSX x86 don't come cheap for most compagny ). And mac user do care about the blue scrollbar:) (after all OSX is elegant and sleek)
And there will be booing all the way (remember the microsoft guy who where layed off because hhe sent picture of apple computer on the microsoft campusin fact he wasn't working for microsoft anyway, but whatever). Apple is somehow protected by some funny sheild
Face it, windows XP is far less secure than 2000. SP2 is a joke compared to the sp6 of the venerable NT4. I would says that NT based OS are good after sp4:)).
my fear for pushing user to upgrade, is that they put an expiring mechanism, or a subscribing for update ( maybe I'll consider to downgrade all my comp to 2000 or nt4 ).
XP offers no real performance improvement, compared to other NT class os, and offer an amount of bloatness comparable to MacOs ( no troll indended ).
Stick to mosaic or lynx they are fine for searching info on website ( unless your looking for p0rn )
Well nothing is eternal, and once we're born we already know that all got our ticket to death.
The question is who will die first, Intel or the internet
Am I dreaming or did they had put a slot-in cd/dvd drive in their iMac again ? Man they are cool but causes tons of problem (specially with those odd shaped cd, or even mini cd), I though they put a tray on the previous model due to that pb. And why calling a DVD-R writer a "superdrive", I was ok for calling the IEEE 1394 a "firewire", but a "superdrive" (what next ? hyper-mega-drive for blue ray !!!)
I've already see model like these from HP/Compaq but they are targeted at business user rather than consumer user, so technically they might be first to target it at consumer ( I admit it's less ugly than the g5 powermac ).
I agree with you as big compagny are thinking about the console market first before the pc one.
But dev/test/debug seems to be shorter on console due to unique hardware specification (nothing like the nightmare on PC:proc+OS+VGA+soundcard+CD drive).
Of course the consoles are less extendable but that make them more stable against an implementation. plus the cost of upgrading a PC is too much in the current race for global domination that oppose ATI and NVidia.
But I know that console are slow when compared to our typical gaming pc, but given the usability of a console against a PC hardware nightmare , a pc wouldn't stand a chance.
Why the title, because currently mac gaming is growing again, and the fact the mac are more easy to use and are more stable because apple hold their hardware specification tight, the might gain more and more share of personal gaming computer (no kidding it may happen one day).
For High end gamer, pc is the platform of choice, but do we need horsepower for compelling games, I think not.
NB: I do give microsoft money for their xbox but I now use it to read my divx in the living room.
if Apple goes down microsoft will be down for desktop software monopoly:), that's why they would keep apple alive, by injecting million of dollars into it.
it's true that Ipod does not help apple in financing area, but in success it is a great story.
what helps apple:
high margin product ( mostly workstation computer like g4 or g5, and parts for them), software like final cut and hopefully garage band.
But I think that the fight with microsoft has been ridiculous, since I think that apple is in the same grade as SGI or Sun.

we're talking about emergency calls, then well for such emergencies I guess the theater would be more than pleased to give you a courtesy call.
