Hum, I believe that Apple is a gatekeeper because of the money it bring them ! Being the only offical entry point for iOS application with an undersized staff for approval, Apple is seriously milking the cow here.
that's no good using microsoft product for the security record, well thank you. You just gave me the argument I need to switch my parents, buddies, girlfriend to linux.
That the whole windows problem, because most of the OS is solid but rely on somewhat sloppy driver (most of high end user usually install beta quality video driver because they expec a 5% perf gain).
Apple customers welcome to the pain microsoft has been suffering for decade.
Oh and the blue screen is a feature too:).
we all remember the 3dmark fiasco with some graphic card constructor did some fiddling to alter their score.
what about javascript engine, or rendering engine ?
of course people in the industry have been known for their fairness and good practice ( especially whose with closed code ).
Again it's a matter of personnal taste,
chrome beta can be extended with some pain, but is fast and could restore most of its memory thank to the whole process separation.
safari is mostly for mac user and eye candy lover, but fast.
opera have very little extension means, is fast enough, and got a lot of feature which cause it to vomit option dialog on your screen
firefox extension make make it grind to a stop but are legions, and make your own browsing experience.
still my choices are opera and firefox.
well technically it's not a virus, it doesn't spread like a virus, only via social engineering (the virus spreader posted the malware on a torrent).
And even the impact of it is not a virus as we know it.
Yet it is a malware and shouldn't be taken ligthly by Mac user.
even better install Bonzi Buddy on your servers, and better yet discard your firewall, they are for pussies anyway.
And who the need those lunix servers, windows 95 "should be enough for everyone"
Sure dev are able to cram more crap into spare cpu cycle. But looking at the trends now, single core is mostly the way to go with light OSes and optimized software ( netbook ) for the end user, as for more niche market that find a use in high performance computing (slashdot reader, scentist) I'm pretty sure that multiprocessor is a better way to go rather than multicore ( wich is a way to do cheap multiprocessor design anyway ).
Anyway OSes HAL have been ready for a long time for SMP, but multicore broke the abstraction of SMP because of the shared resource on the die between the core.
Anyway again the processor vendors create an offer, by putting faster processor, and software vendor put the needs by creating bloated software.
we still have the choice of staying with windows and not upgrading at all.
XP and 2000 seems to remain windows OS of choice.
Seems that vista was the windows ME based on NT and windows 7 joyfully stay on the same path.
Most users still rely on bundled browser on their computer, it's good enough for their use. So as most computer has XP installed, user will stick with IE6 for a long time, I guess that the bad press around vista wouldn't help IE7 having a large share of the market.
On the other hand Safari is slipped in with Itune (or Itune update), so I guess more and more people will stick with either Safari or IE.
People don't care about standard, they care about browsing webmail, shopping on amazon/ebay. So Dev/Designer Should care more about it (but that would be in a fantasy universe where everyone is not pushed by the will of re-inventing the wheel).
well it is well know that you can get pwned by firewire because of DMA access [http://it.slashdot.org/it/08/03/04/1258210.shtml], disable that and your firewire would be crawling.
Performance or Security ?
Yes, I have to reboot a Unix box because I update a web browser. I don't know what came over Apple to make that decision; the only reason I can think of is that Safari hooks into the kernel - and quite seriously, a kext for a browser is a pretty bad design choice. You mean like Internet Explorer (from 5 to 7 )?
Of course new features are mostly welcome in most OS, but it can gives more headache for dev's to keep backward compatibility ( but of course most of the time, this is a feature that is most of the time replaced by a "require a newer version" dialog box).
Of course modern api gives more security, usability and ease of programming but at what cost ?
Isn't OSX secure enough for most user that don't feel the need to upgrade the OS but must because their software require a newer OS version (and their OS a newer hardware)?
But you agree that when you buy a song you are basically "renting" them a song.
But enough of apple bashing, DRM prove to be successful as software validation is successful (eg: symantec, macromedia/adobe, microsoft ). It has only prevented a small share of piracy to be done, and is just more annoying for legals users ( "no we don't say you are a thief but we want to check just in case...." ).
However future medias prove that the future will be very dark, HD-Media DRM that can prevent your video player to work just because the compagny, who made it, made a mistake (in that case what happen ? do we get a refund on the player or do we have a 1000$ piece of junk player ?).
or the mac crowd is starting to considering that hacking a mac is like gay porn, it's quite amusing how slashdot has turned from pro-penguin/pro-bsd to pro-mac . However everybody knows that for demanding server task and console OSX is horribly slow when compared to penguin-98 and even bsd.
However you can't win against the world domination of the penguin muhahahahaha
video games were so crappy
even if I like Sam Raimi, and that josh Kirby has faithfully give good pictures of the discworld I hardly see how by current standard hollywood producer would give a good picture of the discworld ( imagine Death wearing leather, just because it look good )

I am pretty sure that my mom is ready to do that, and especially like the part where she can't seem to keep her bookmak

I think they just patented computer trojan or worm (on windows of course )
I'll choose number 5 and still think that MS best OS is still w2k (as a dev point of view, I admit it sucked for multimedia creation ).

still too complicated. maybe a more simple one should do the trick.

Same thing could be said about safari users ?

gee only wait for a SP2 to be released, as for myself I never use an NT os before it reached SP4 level.

running windows on mac is not considered as porn anymore.
And OSX hasn't been hacked yet to run on these .....
