Again it's a matter of personnal taste, chrome beta can be extended with some pain, but is fast and could restore most of its memory thank to the whole process separation. safari is mostly for mac user and eye candy lover, but fast. opera have very little extension means, is fast enough, and got a lot of feature which cause it to vomit option dialog on your screen firefox extension make make it grind to a stop but are legions, and make your own browsing experience. still my choices are opera and firefox.

  11. Multicore ? I don't need a stinking multicore on Windows and Linux Not Well Prepared For Multicore Chips · · Score: 1

Sure dev are able to cram more crap into spare cpu cycle. But looking at the trends now, single core is mostly the way to go with light OSes and optimized software ( netbook ) for the end user, as for more niche market that find a use in high performance computing (slashdot reader, scentist) I'm pretty sure that multiprocessor is a better way to go rather than multicore ( wich is a way to do cheap multiprocessor design anyway ). Anyway OSes HAL have been ready for a long time for SMP, but multicore broke the abstraction of SMP because of the shared resource on the die between the core. Anyway again the processor vendors create an offer, by putting faster processor, and software vendor put the needs by creating bloated software.

Most users still rely on bundled browser on their computer, it's good enough for their use. So as most computer has XP installed, user will stick with IE6 for a long time, I guess that the bad press around vista wouldn't help IE7 having a large share of the market. On the other hand Safari is slipped in with Itune (or Itune update), so I guess more and more people will stick with either Safari or IE. People don't care about standard, they care about browsing webmail, shopping on amazon/ebay. So Dev/Designer Should care more about it (but that would be in a fantasy universe where everyone is not pushed by the will of re-inventing the wheel).

Yes, I have to reboot a Unix box because I update a web browser. Of course modern api gives more security, usability and ease of programming but at what cost ? Isn't OSX secure enough for most user that don't feel the need to upgrade the OS but must because their software require a newer OS version (and their OS a newer hardware)?

It has only prevented a small share of piracy to be done, and is just more annoying for legals users ( "no we don't say you are a thief but we want to check just in case ...." ). However future medias prove that the future will be very dark, HD-Media DRM that can prevent your video player to work just because the compagny, who made it, made a mistake (in that case what happen ? do we get a refund on the player or do we have a 1000$ piece of junk player ?).
