Right On!
I get annoyed by people saying that things are 'lame' ( disrespectful to physically handicapped persons ) , 'weak' ( disrespectful to physically handicapped persons ) , 'stupid' ( disrespectful to mentally handicapped persons ) , 'retarded' ( disrespectful to mentally handicapped persons ), and 'handicapped'( disrespectful to persons of differing ability ).
You can bond with your children by sharing the gaming experience. Even when they are too small to operate the keyboard and mouse, they can always wear the headset while playing CS or Battlefield 2. "Tell DethBr1n90r he is a fucking faggot, honey!"
This is just SOP for business.
Dial-up ISPs had more customers than modems.
Cable ISPs sell more 5Mbit accounts than their infrastructure can cope with at once.
Airlines sell more tickets than the flight can take.
If you look at the small print you realise that you are committed to paying out hard cash and the other party in the so-called 'deal' has many loopholes for not providing the service. That is why it is printed so small!
Is there a solution? Maybe we could all start up our own companies?
"Hello, Zmollusc inc. How can I help you? What? Your haven't been paid for providing intarweb access this month? Oh dear, I am sure it will just be a mix-up. You will have to call accounting on this number between 10.30 and 12.00 or 14.00 to 16.00 Monday to Thursday. Calls cost $1 a minute. Have a nice day."
"Hello, Zmollusc inc. How can I help you? What? Oh yes, the alleged pron downloads. Yes, the person involved has been severely reprimanded. I am sure it won't happen again. Have a nice day."
Not round here. Rather than promoting a long-term employee, a new clueless person will be given the higher level job, the long-term employee will have to train up the new guy while still doing his own job. Later the new guy will threaten the long-term guy if he doesn't do his job better. Eventually the long term guy will die.
Why can't we just pay one Federal Tax, one State Tax, and one Local Tax? (I imagine it's varied outside the US.) Why do we need to be nickeled and dimed to death?
Easy peasy! Because to simplify and reduce 'waste' in the taxation system would reduce the size of the goverment oficial's 'empire'. Not many managers will say "Reduce the paperwork and headcount and make me less important? Woot. Let's do it!".
................. how many of those thousands of shows suck? How many new, good things are there? $3.99 a download for something i know i like and haven't seen? Form an orderly queue behind me.
'Marketing people have proven themselves to be remarkably effective at minipulating our behavior even with the very limited access they've had to us in the past'
I have been advertised at for decades but still buy the cheapest products that do the job, be it aspirin, cement, breakfast cereal or bread. Advertising is the emperor's new clothes, where are all the fancy ad campaigns for crack and dope and other big sellers? Why aren't marketing people able to market their own company into a monopoly? What a crock.
I would like the idea of milage based road taxing if it were not for the recent (25 years or so) mania for blocking roads off and creating one way systems. Driving into town and back is at least 30% more distance travelled and twice the fuel used because of traffic lights. Hilariously, soon we will have to pay a 'congestion charge' for sitting in traffic jams caused by the reduction (in both width and number) of roads. Even more fun is to be had when an accident or 2mm of snow makes a road impassable and you try to make a detour through side roads, but they have been blocked by concrete bollards. How i wish they would re-instate lead in fuel so i didn't notice things like this.
I am beginning to have my doubts. I hired a dozen graphic artists to build me an alternative internet ( I call it the AlterNet! Catchy, huh? ) so that i don't have governments interfering with the information flow. That was 3 years ago and all they have done in that time is doodle!!!!
Nice doodles, I guess, but not very useful.
Hmmm..... if there are music charts in print media of which tracks are being shared on-line, it won't be long before the music labels are funding server farms with virtual filesharers to market their product.
"Hey Kids, have you heard about the latest hot new band *insert manufactured band here*? Their debut single is being torrented by 156,463,372,346,589,521,455,878,978,357 seeders online and you can buy the whole album for only £20 in your local store. Hurry now and look kewl in front of all your friends!!!!"
So they are seeing what appeals to downloaders so they can tailor things that they are trying to sell?
Isn't that a bit like (yeah yeah copyright infringement!=theft. I said LIKE!) seeing what shoplifters steal in order to find out what people will buy?
"Well, it seems that small, easily concealed items will be the big sellers, guys! Nobody will be buying big bulky stuff, so don't get any more freezers or beds in stock as we will never sell them."
Hmmm, if you are recording tv channels, how long will it take to fill 500 Gb? 250 hours? so that would be how many full series of programs?
Pythons would take 30Gb -ish?
South Park 40Gb -ish? ......etc
You wouldn't take too long to fill up half a terabyte with nostalgic TV.
Yeah. That is what we old folk are doing when we make our playlists. How does this new fangled technology handle prog rock concept albums? Got to keep the album tracks together and sequential or else the whole thing is just pointless.
I watch the live broadcast of The Mighty Boosh, then watch the next weeks episode in crummy Realplayer-o-vision (it sucks but I just tell myself it is quantum interference from the episode travelling backwards a week in time). When, a week later, that episode airs, it is still a treat to see it in all its PAL glory.
The license fee is far too low.
I would gladly sell my house and all its contents to help the BBC.

You got it backwards. Two strokes have better power/weight than 4 strokes. Consumption and pollution much worse though.

It isn't just programming shops. Management will always think better of people who do lots of hours. Productivity doesn't enter into it.
I was just going to post the same thing. Any 'wasted' watts usually get offset by reduced heating bills anywhere round here.
I hope they get their site up and running ASAP. I am desperate to find a supplier of those Viagra pills.
So, what you're telling me, Percy, is that something you have never seen is slightly less blue than something else you have never seen.

2Gig HD and MessyDos 3.2? How many partitions is that, even if the bios is up to it? 60? Won't it run out of drive letters?
Don't get too excited fellow /. stereotypes, any kind of girls aren't interested in you. :(

Thanks! I will remember that for when ipods are no longer cool and i can buy one for £10 and run it off external AA ni-cads sellotaped onto its back.

I'm a chumpette, you insensitive clod!
