"Gutmann method was only meant for drives from like 20 years ago. I believe he later stated that a few wipes of random data were about the best you could do."
From the Wiki article (Gutmann's words): "If you're using a drive which uses encoding technology X, you only need to perform the passes specific to X, and you never need to perform all 35 passes. For any modern PRML/EPRML drive, a few passes of random scrubbing is the best you can do. As the paper says, "A good scrubbing with random data will do about as well as can be expected". This was true in 1996, and is still true now."
"I sure hope this happens. It would be much much much better than most of what's on Comedy Central - Drawn Together, Sarah Silverman, a thousand showings of Blue Collar Comedy Tour, etc."
I've always took it as a reflection of the average intelect of american television viewer ship.. I mean how can you explain Futurama being canceled and Family Guy extended ad infinitum?
The same game that spans four versions with only upgrades to models and textures.. bravo! basically the same game play from 2 on.. don't get me wrong i like the COD series but the originality dropped off after the first sequel and have just been money makers from then on.
"Guitar hero"
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that GH 3 sucks balls compared to 1-2? i don't like the new HUD, i don't like "battle mode' where you intentionally mess up other players.. and the notes don't seem to correctly correspond to the timing of the song nor how you would normally play it on a guitar.
One of the biggest reason GH is such a blast (imho) is that the notes are displayed similar to how you would actually play them on a guitar.. chords for chords, up the fret for higher notes, etc.. and they are timed so that if you know the color you don't have to watch the screen to play.. you could do it by ear. GH3 seems to put notes just to make it harder for each level (easy, med, high, expert).
With GH3, most of what i loved has been tweaked by activision's studio into a somewhat different product.. the only redeeming quality are song's that i wanted to play.. but then when i go to play them i'm disappointed.
"Ironically, if you tried to enforce moral consequences like this in real life, for real-life, proven atrocities (say, having 'child molester' tattoo'd on the forehead of someone convicted of child rape) the ALCU would sue you senseless."
You mean like having a electronic bracelet attached to your ankle or your current living location published pubilicly for all to see on the internet with a big red dot? Or only being allowed to live in special designated areas for child molesters akin to ghettos of WW2?
"Their constant example? Newspapers didn't kill radio. But the Internet is doing a pretty good job of doing so."
Actually the internet is the one thing i believe will honestly make every other form of media distribution obsolete. Let me use the news for example.
i haven't read a newspaper or watched the local news in 2-3 years.. but every time someone asks me "did you hear on the news/read in the newspaper X" I have already read about it online.. and not just the story.. opposing viewpoints, can research the history via wikipedia or other means, or contribute my own viewpoint to the discussion.
When i have had occasion to watch the news (my wife still does), the stories they report are always 3-4 days after i have already heard about them, and i know more about the story so I can see the bias they interject into the "reporting".
Why use the news to get traffic reports when i can go online and use realtime viewable maps from 511.org, i can see my route, alternate routes, traffic speeds, etc.. with the news they give me a very narrow dump of info that i can hardly ever use.
Of course, when it comes to music, i can borrow any song from any person and sample what i like, THEN buy (singles or the occasional CD), i can also find history of bands, lyrics, discographies, touring shcedules, etc... I will continue to do so no matter what the labels might like to call me.. i buy music when i want to keep a copy for myself and have no moral qualms about downloading, trying, then buying or deleting the file.
i can't think of any current information/entertainment distribution model currently available that even holds a candle to the internet and what can be gleaned from it, it also aqllows the information that IS gleaned to be double checked and unfiltered.
Now that i have it, i can't imagine life without it.. the most ubiquitous free flow of information ever available in all of history?
According to both my yoga teacher and Jesus, thinking about something is equivalent to doing it."
Actually that's not what Jesus was saying (not sure about yoga).
It's the desire to do something, fostering and being ok with that desire.
Thinking about shooting someone is different than fuming in rage deciding the best method to hide the body. Thinking about having sex with someone is different than imagining the act and letting that turn into a burning lust.
Thoughts are usually easily dismissed, unless they are well nourished into desire.
"And I have been smoking for over 30 years, without getting cancer.
That must also prove the smoking studies wrong too."
the studies that say smoking increases the risk of cancer? no that wouldn't disprove those studies.
Proving a link to a biological disease from an external action is a lot easier than linking possible behavioral outcomes to a given activity.. i don't see how anyone could possibly rule out enough external or internal factors that influence behavior to positively say that "media" is the overriding factor.
Maybe in lab rats where you can control certain genetics and any and all stimuli.. but people? Give me a break.
In my example with my kids, there is no one else that has had more involvement or knows the "subject matter" better than myself (and comparatively ~10x more direct monitoring than any study could possibly achieve), so i would put more stock in my "anecdotal" evidence than 100 of these types of "studies".
""The research clearly shows that exposure to virtual violence increases the risk that both children and adults will behave aggressively," said Huesmann, adding it could have a particularly detrimental effect on the well-being of youngsters."
I spent most of my youth watching violence on TV and playing violent video games and this is pure bullshit, in fact, if I ever see this guy in the street I WILL BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HIM!!!!!!!!!!!! *smashes keyboard hulk style*
but i trot it out when i see these "studies", my 3 kids have been playing "violent" (CS/Quake/Doom/WarCraft/Etc) games since they were 5-6 yrs old and haven't had any agressive behavior problems in school or otherwise (at home, playing with friends), if anything they are grossed out by violence in movies and such. current ages 11-12-16.
(not to brag) In fact they are pretty highly regarded in their respective schools.. and my wife is a teacher's aide in their district so if one of them was getting out of line she would definitely hear about it..
I have always told my users (I work IT) that eventually EVERYTHING dies/fails.. thus the need for backups and such.. i've even seen a few processors give up the ghost in my home systems.. why would this be a shock to anyone?
Was there a widely held belief that all computer internals die EXCEPT for CPUs? If so this is the first i have heard of it...
"there are huge wins to be had by any company or country that can significantly boost production, "
if crude oil prices are high, and a company then produces more, the price would stay high? (thus the reason for increasing production), that just doesn't make sense... what does make sense is that by flatlining (making it stay constant) production, prices will remain high and go higher as oil use increases every year. increasing production would only stabilize or help to reduce crude prices.. correct?
"I think the little "waves" on either side are pushed up mounds of dried mud. ie: the rocks moved when the mud was wet, therefore personal levitation would be required to not leave footprints, unless the persons were stone-wraiths and can form the dried earth with their hands as if it is wet.:)"
sarcasm aside, it could also be pushed up dry mud that was melted into mounds by rain later on...if you looks at the tracks, the clumps of dried mud in the tracks still have the lines and grooves defining each clump as the surrounding non distribued mud.. if it was slid when it was wet then it would not look the same and would be dried and clear like the surrounding mud.
"Well theoretically, under trinitarian doctrine Jesus IS God, and God sent Jesus down to die. Therefore God did kill Himself."
Actually since all three of the "trinity" are spirit in nature, wouldn't it just be the body that was sacrificed? "fear him who can kill body AND spirit?"
Not to mention that he sent him down to be a sacrifice.
Fox News is not motivated by a political agenda, they are motivated by profit."
The parent company that owns Fox news might be, yes. But Fox news itself is not about profit, it is about pushing a political agenda as a counter-balance to the "left wing biased media". That it is so insanely popular was a side affect.
It was a joke.. sorry.. I tried this joke before and it was taken the same way:-/
anywho, i just kept trying the different puzzles until I figured them out.. what's the point of someone showing you how to do the puzzles? that's the whole game, puzzle solving?!?
I have found it interesting wacthing my 12 yr old daughter play. i kept thinking no do it this way but then i realized that her way of solving each puzzle was just as valid and showed her own problem solving techniques.. like on some of the moving platform maps, i was shooting portals on the corners and timing my jumps to make the next platform coming.. my daughter would make 2 closer portals and then stand on the portals and wait for the platforms.
On level 18 she got the cube BEFORE taking out any of the turrents, which i thought was insane, heh
"I'd take console manufacturer censorship over government censorship any day."
For me it is the reverse.. if my government bans something there is still the black market or downloads, if the console manufacturer censors it, then that's it... OR you get a very watered down version.
