I went to grade school in the early 1970's and we learned the metric system back then. When I went to college in the mid-80s (for mechanical engineering), 95% of my work was done in metric units.
From my personal perspective (and many other people I know), it's not an issue of understanding metric, we just don't want to switch!
Proud to say I've never had an AOL account. Back in the day (mid-80's to early 90's) though, I subscribed to Delphi and Compuserve. That was when CS was $24.99/hr for 2400 baud. Yikes! It was all downhill after CS went GUI, so I got a dialup account with a local provider. Haven't looked back.
Actually there was an interesting article in the New York Times Magazine sometime last year about college football programs. Basically, the article said even the biggest most successful football programs are realy big net money losers for the schools.
Parents are THE most important factor in a child's success in school and life in general. My parents expected a lot from me and I delivered. I expect a lot from my children and they deliver too. They understand the importance of education to their future. They understand respect for others and the meaning of responsibility. It is not the school's job to do what parent's don't do.
I doubt it's a knowledge issue. I like the surprise factor involved in being exposed to new music without having to work for it by hunting down MP3's. I think this is what the original poster meant. It's a plus that the MyFi holds the promise of doing this on a mobile platform.
You don't live in the New York metropolitan area, do you? Free radio here has SUCKED for years. There is one classic rock station, three "urban" stations, one Zoo, one "adult" modern music station, a few Spanish stations, and a few worthless college-type stations. Oh yeah, and a "smooth jazz" station. They all repeat their own 40 song playlists on a daily basis.
I already have an XM Roady that I actually use at home (since I don't drive much anymore due to a job change). When the price comes down on MyFi (and reviews show that reception actually works) you can be sure I'll be buying one.
I bought a MAG 15" monitor for my home computer way back in 1995. I still use it and don't plan on replacing it because the image is still perfect. I forget how much I paid for it, but I sure am getting my money's worth.
Actually, I run it on an iMac and it's not bad considering how outdated the iMac is. I saw a big speed improvement after updating to the latest Apple JVM.
Yes, there is room for improvement and there will be improvements as new versions are released. Our Mac users are satisfied enough with the new client that they're happy to dunp the old 5.2 Mac client.
Actually, the GroupWise client for Linux/Macintosh is not in beta. It was released a while ago and the client is up to SP2 already. FYI, the GroupWise server agents run on Linux (and Netware and Windows as well).
This has nothing to do with elites and top down society. The point of the article is that Wikipedia may not be the ultimate encyclopedia as some of its boosters may proclaim.
To address your point, you're saying that tyranny of mediocrity is acceptable and in fact desireable? In your world, there is no reason for people to aspire to higher knowledge and enlightenment?
Your response is proof that the country is irreparably split. You apparently follow an extreme right wing ideology that cannot be countered by what I would perceive as reasonable argument.
Social security- it's not enough to say it's a problem. What's your workable suggestion to fix it? It's easy to tear things down but it's difficult to build. The Republicans have proposed crap.
Allies - much as you may want it, a country cannot stand alone in this world. Good relationships are important, and they don't require giving up sovereignty.
Don't know about you, but I like to travel and see the world. There are many places in the world I will not go to due to safety concerns. The list of unsafe places is bound to increase. I don't want to live in a fortress America. I want to be free.
Federal government - explain to me how this country would work without a Federal government? What about funding for armed forces? We're going to need them.
Oh, and let's not forget the looting and pillaging. Since apparently now, according to you, the White House is endorsing violence against gays, I think that's not much of a stretched continuation of your logic.
I didn't say the White House, did I? My worry is that the right-wing radicals are now emboldened, thinking there is a national mandate to implement their agenda.
You think changing the president for 4 years would have changed that? If people wanted to do that sort of thing, they would - with or without approval of their government. That's why groups like the KKK and the Neo-Nazis exist.
The difference now is that those people who want that kind of thing now have a very strong foothold in our national government. They can use that centralized power and bully pulpit to further their causes.
You're right about voting for someone new in 4 years, but my fear is the damage this administration (with the help of a right-wing Senate and House) will inflict that could last 20 or 30 years. This is what I foresee:
ultra conservative supreme court appointments
ruining of Social Security
relationships with allies severed
inability for Americans to safely travel overseas
the imposition of fundamentalist christian morality on all citizens (prayer in school, no abortion, discrimination and violence against gays, teaching creationism, etc)
bankruptcy of the Federal government due to grandiose overspending and insufficient tax revenue
I guess that explains why average lifespans have increased, many formerly deadly diseases have been controlled or eliminated, and humans have reproduced like rabbits and covered the entire earth and now modify its ecology.
It only happens when something is very wrong with the engine or emissions system. I've never smelled it in any of my cars, and only a handful of times from other cars on the road over the last 25 years.
The human nose is extremely sensitive to H2S, even trace amounts are detectable. What you perceive is a very insignificant amount. You make it sound like cars are discharging plumes of H2S - they are not.
Face it, no matter what you may think, new cars pollute much much less than any old car. Don't get me wrong, I like older cars. I have a 1979 911SC and I love it.

I have CD's that I bought in 1983 or 1984 that are still in perfect condition (WOW, 20 years!)
This jibes with the CNN article as far as storage conditions. I'm always careful to handle CD's by the edges and keep them stored vertically.
You did OK for whatever reason. However, there are many kids who are pressured not to succeed and who succumb to that pressure.
I love it! Sorry I don't have any mod-points. Seriously though, this would really work!
Argh, I REALLY know how to spell "really."

If I had mod points, I'd give you all of them. Wonderful posting.
Pie in the sky. The installation cost of such an electrical system would be astronomical.
I've never seen these problems. I still say there's something wrong in your environment.

All I can say is, you must have had the most incompetent IT staff ever. I bet they were MCSE's.
I run Groupwise 6.5 on XP as well, and it's great. To each his own I guess.

But...but...lunch box portables have been done already! (e.g. the Compaq Portble III) :-)
Your response is proof that the country is irreparably split. You apparently follow an extreme right wing ideology that cannot be countered by what I would perceive as reasonable argument.
Sigh - why am I wasting my time...

The list goes on...
A lot of the new testament was written and/or revised hundreds, not 10's of years AD.
Anyway, assuming translations are always made from original source (not very likely), any translation is subject to the biases of the translator.
