Just because you can see your XP desktop first doesn't mean you can do anything useful yet. My work box is XP Pro and it becomes usesful at about the same time my home Ubuntu box is. Sure XP shows you a desktop quicker, but while it's still really loading.
BTW, in all fairness I should have specified that the DHCP problem was with a Hoary RC from last week. I'll have to try the latest release and see if this minor problem is fixed.
Last August, Ubuntu was THE reason I dumped my Windows partition and destroyed every CD I had with the word "Microsoft" on it. I'm much happier now.
Only one slight problem, in Hoary, DHCP is not working properly for me. I have to deactivate then reactivate my NIC, of which, only one NIC can work. Otherwise, it just ROCKS!
Alternatives? Yes, alternatives that have poor battery life and just generally don't function as well as phones, and eeek, are susceptible to VIRUSES!!
Am I the only one that misses some of the great cell phones that were actually designed specifically to be the best form of wireless voice communication? I sure wish I could buy a new manufacture Motorola StarTac today!! Black-on-green screen - NO crappy color screens. No stupid ring tones. No photo album. No crappy camera. Two-WEEK standby time!! Just a damn good PHONE...nothing else.
"Has anyone else found FOSE to be less interesting this year and becoming less and less interesting each progressive year? I walked the floor in a little more than a couple of hours and really wasn't impressed with much. Even the DoD pavillion used the same "hanging soldiers" from the ceiling as last year. It seemed that some of the vendors were "calling it in" and there wasn't that much new and exciting to see."
Perhaps you should try other venues when trolling for the ladies and product models?
How about some scantily clad Alias wanna-be models trying to hack your toaster would have made things more interesting?
Perhaps Apple will beat the mouse market by integrating Bluetooth and an optical sensor to the next iPod - dubbed the 'iMousePod.' Now your iPod IS a mouse with Apples new "innovative mouse-scroll wheel input system"!
This new innovation is guaranteed to make you appreciate your one-button mouse of yore!
"Windows, love it or hate it, makes it very easy to secure your data on a laptop. Just right click, and buried somewhere in there (Advanced options or something) tick the Encrypted option."
I'd bet your paycheck that the password to login is on a post-it stuck to the laptop's keyboard!
"Of course, there are issues with losing the encryption key, but as it's a laptop, and probably only has the one harddrive, I would expect the person to be keeping a backup somewhere else."
HAHAHAHAA! A Windows user? I wouldn't count on it!
As the other AC suggests, try Ubuntu. OR, try FreeBSD since it's pretty damn good and is essentially the core of Mac OS X. I've used both and like FreeBSD more from a technical standpoint, but when it comes down to just getting work done without a fuss, Ubuntu is better for the desktop. FreeBSD is an awesome server, but you will do more configuring with it than what Ubuntu picks for you (not all bad or good).

Central repository where (check out code from whom)? I'm downloading files from someone name "Linux Hater Hacker" or "Virus Packager"? Which version is current?
Not to say the idea is completely without merit, only that some technical obstacles need to be addressed first.
I'm glad I won't have to worry about falling for those stupid "Free iPod" scams. As soon as my Nigerian friend returns my savings "fiffty fould" I can buy as many iPods as I want!
I'd be interested in trying this. Did you just change your respositories in Ubuntu to reflect Debian sid? Was it really that easy or did you have other problems?
Thanks for that link. I've been considering getting an Apple for desktop work, but it's good to know who's giving back to the various [BSD] communities.
As was stated earlier, almost anyone using a FOSS OS should send a donation, no matter how small, to OpenBSD. OpenSSH has been widely adopted to benefit us all.
I was hoping to be the first to give Microsoft the finger, but it wasn't a thumb...
No links to the torrents yet??
/. doing thieir jobs well I suppose.
Too many articles about Apple's Legal Department on

Just a Microsoft marketing mind trick really.

Data mining, portfolio optimization, credit-risk statistical analysis and model forecasting, etc....
All 'real world' things that I work with daily and always seem to need more power.

Nothing wrong with that. That's just good [and smart] marketing!

Don't you 'hoary'?
Perhaps:
Shaved
Landing Strip
Full Bush
etc...

LSI PERC3/DC (w/ MegaRAID Elite 1600 BIOS loaded) works fine well in FreeBSD, but lacks many of the Windows-only management utilities.

Fine, don't use ports on FreeBSD if you don't want to. A simple "pkg_add -r [package name]" works great on FreeBSD, and arguably better than apt-get.
"Perhaps all these Zombie comps should be put to good use. Who cares if people don't want to participate in grid computing ... they can be forced!"
Right On!!
We might as well use these computers to search for intelligent life at these machines certainly are not exposed to it locally!
WTF with trash cans? When I delete something, I want it gone!!
Replace trash can applet with incinerator!
Or perhaps even complete with devilish FreeBSD Daemon devilishly dancing about?
