  1. Emotional Connection? on Why Online Multiplayer Isn't That Important · · Score: 1

Look, I play multiplayer for a variety of reasons, but the main reason is that other human players enhance the game play beyond what a stupid AI could. Whether I have an emotional connect with the other players is not really important. Yes, sometimes I like to play games with people I know, and people that I can chat with, but that is not the only basis for playing. This isn't a dating service or a "party" as the article likes to suggest. When I'm killing/dying on say CS, I couldn't care less about who the people are. I know that they are better then a bot to play with, and emotional connection or not, it is still better then playing with a bot.

I have to reiterate, there are times that a multiplayer game is better when you know the people you are playing with, however, to use the articles lame analogy, it's sometimes fun to go to a party where you know no body and make new friends, or even drink the night away with then, and never see them again. Need for emotional connection varies greatly on the style of game.

Overrated by who's standards? I acknowledge your opinion, but I must kindly disagree.

Am I the only one who read this as to not mean the hungry people on the planet? I read it more as a means to rebuild the eco-system of the world, thus feeding the planet. Sure, building the agriculture back up will in turn feed the people; but a long term goaled project like this surly is planning for a long term result.

  5. Re:Emergent Gameplay on How D&D Shaped the Modern Videogame · · Score: 1

Though I agree that the emergent factor was good with the old style of game play, I believe the fact that they did use math and mechanics, (i.e. will for mental attacks, agility for movement, constitution for hit point, etc) played a large role in video game development. Old style games didn't really calculate what was going on in the world by measurable forces, but rather were "just what's happing" and scoring issues. The fact the D&D had a algorithms and mathematical problems attached to almost every action you did, sort of paved the road for games to simple apply that logic to all aspects of modern gaming.

  6. Re:Combined on Wii, DS to Rock With Guitar Hero · · Score: 1

Even before the string of interactive music games came out, I always had the pipe dream of having a game that mimicked the full band experience. Now that pretty much most of the musical experiences are now a reality; it seems that pipe dream is not too far off. Though, I must say, having a set of 4 different displays on one screen might get a bit confusing and complex to actually implement. There is also the trouble of breaking each song down into the different components, where each player has enough play time throughout the song, to still remain interesting.

Only having a limited experience with a band setup, I am not authoritative on the matter by any means; but I would assume each part might not have the same excitement factor as some of the other parts. I can think of way more guitar or vocal solos in songs then say drums.

I would think for a whole band style game, it would be more advantageous to be able to free hand write the parts into a song, or make your own, so that all parts a used equally, or at least still individually interesting.

But hey, I mainly enjoy the drunken playing experience of these style of games, so I'm sure others have different enjoyment factors on the idea.

  7. Freedom or Evil on Vista a Threat to Internet Freedom? · · Score: 1

Well, I just have to point out that the article was written with way too much of a "hippie" tone for me. With comments like, "...the network tends towards liberal values just as a flower turns toward the sun"; it was hard to get the actual message across. I did find that there were some valid points being made, but I do think it is a bit of a stretch to say our freedoms on the internet are being taken away. There is a balance between security and freedoms that is at an acceptable level. Vista may be on a road to restrict some things in the name of security that might be a bit excessive; however, it is a long way off from taking away our freedoms.

I'm not a fan of Vista by any means, but I do believe in focusing on the real discrepancy, rather elevation it above where it needs to be. Vista is a very poor OS, but it's not evil.

There is the problem that I was commenting on. Of course I'd rather people get up and move around, but do we really only have those 2 chooses? Are you suggesting that games now rule our society to the point that we have to go a round-about way to get people to get in shape?

I am not really knocking it, I am more stating that we are at a point where an otherwise cool fact about an existing produce; gets hyped up to be a revolutionary weight loss idea. Good idea, but I believe there should be more then couch potato and couch potato playing Wii.

I agree with you. There is a large number of obese people of all ages; and if playing a game can really combat their obesity, I am all for it.

My point was more of the fact that as a society, being in shape is not as high of a priority, and now we have to resort to "tricking" people to lose weight. I just feel the tone of the article is too much like a late night obesity pill commercial, rather then a cool side-effect of a good product.

  15. Marketing of Fun on Lost Planet - Extreme Condition Review · · Score: 1

I have felt that games recently lack the kind of quality that I usually look for in something that I will invest time and money into; however, I'm not sure that it is really a widespread idea. Game vendors still make sales, and there are obviously people playing these games. One look at it might be that people are just settling for what they got, but I feel it is more the fact that I am from a different generation of gamers, and the newer players are where the market is geared. At the risk of sounding like an old whiner, younger people don't have the attention span like the previous generations. They are about fast, cheap thrills and when they got them, they move on to the next game.

I believe it is just not marketable to make a truly quality game, since it will sell just as much as the crappy ones, and take twice the time to make. Then again, quality is a personal preference, and I might just be the one on the outside complaining, while these stellar games go on.

That being said, it seems like from the article that piracy wasn't for the simple purpose of getting software for free, but rather getting enough software out there for the country's technical economy to grow. I would think that initially it was a smart move for the country as a whole, but now that they have truly gotten into the computer field, they are experiencing the draw-back from actually participation with other nations. This seems like a correlation to what's happing in other nations that have poorer classes of people that are trying to modernize their technical standing.
