What a load of crap! Count the number of people working for Microsoft for those 26 years of business, calculate the man hours. Now do the same for Linux and tell us who the young one is ! I know more man hours doesn't mean better product, but hell it does help if lots of things can be worked on simultaneously by an optimum number of people to make something as complex an offering as Windows or a GNU/Linux distro. A lot of the GNU/Linux work has been done by programmers in their free time (not counting the few paid by RedHat/Novell/etc.) whereas Microsoft pays its (large number of) employees well enough (I presume).
Everyone thought this was actually going to happen 5 or 10 years ago.
Why is there such an obsession of Linux on the desktop ? Why do people care that Linux needs to be on everyone's desktop ? Linux is on my desktop and I am happy about it. Just worry about your own desktop. This "Linux on everyone's desktop" is just some fucking crap that Eric Raymond has conjured up to be more popular.
Yes. Don't get into tech. As a engineer who is now working as a programmer, take it that growth in a tech job saturates too soon and in the end you will still be taking shit from someone else (unless you start your own company). I suggest, get into sales and switch to management. Since you are in tech, get into tech sales, and then get a management degree and go make money and enjoy life and not worry about crappy reboot situations with Windows machines.
Even in management, there are many good problems to solve and challenge yourself with.
However, I think that we could do just as well sticking with the regular algorithms, and having a lot of threads each running on a different core.
This is exactly the problem with the widespread acceptance of parallel programming. Software programmers don't want to think about new parallel algorithms. I have been and still am working in the parallel programming industry for 2.5 years now (of the total 3 years work-ex that I have), and I find it ridiculous that many programmers with 5-10 years experience or more don't want to use their god-damn brains. Agreed parallel programming is a different paradigm and makes you think more, but what the hell is wrong with that !? You already know sequential style programming, now you will know more and know both and leverage that knowledge to use the available hardware best, to your satisfaction. Isn't that what a programmer should do ? Leverage his knowledge to gain maximum use of the available computer hardware ?
They should just teach parallel programming (not multi-threading, but parallel programming - using MPI for example) to everyone learning programming in college. It is very useful, esp for engineers, since they mostly work with programs that use huge amounts of memory or do intensive computations for long periods of time.
you can make a good firewall with the 200MHz system by using a minimal installation of Linux or best OpenBSD. Add an extra ethernet card and it can be your router and you won't have to buy a Linksys/DLINK stuff. you can use this as a web server as well simultaneously. That way if you like to use Windows you will be more secure than earlier.
You can add a good gaming card that is supported on your PC, install Linux and play games like FlightGear which need basic CPU but a good GPU.
If you are an electronics freak, then use the system to program microcontrollers and other things. You can that way use your paralllel port scanners etc. dismantle them, and reuse their equipment and reprogram them as you want. Of course, all this is just for hobby sake.
If CRT works, donate it. otherwise attach a KVM to it, and use for multiple machines. Or if you like Windows and like games, then get a Dual video out card and connect to play games on two screens etc. etc.
Lots of things can be done with old equipment as long as you are willing to do it. You can make a security system in your own house, by using webcams and collecting simultaneous video output like they show in movies.
Depends on how much itching you have in your balls regarding all this . If it itches, scratch the itch.
There was this Indian joke:
Q. What do you call one Pakistani on the moon ?
A. Problem
Q. What do you call two Pakistanis on the moon ?

Q. What do you call all Pakistanis on the moon ?
A. Problem solved
Unfortunately for you global warming scaremongers,
"global warming scaremongers" !? Seriously! Maybe that is why atleast in the North-Eastern part of USA, we have had a wet Christmas instead of a white one.
Well actually in India, unlike the USA, kids/students who are really good at academics are valued and respected as opposed to kids/students who are sportsmen. In fact, it is very common in India, that if a kid is good at sports, the first thing people ask is "Is that kid bad at academics ?". Academics comes first, and then comes everything else.
Mod the parent up for outlining the sound driver problem in Linux. I love Linux but I hate the sound resource tie-up with application design. It is anal.
or in other words lead to the reality show of The Matrix
mod parent flamebait please. how can you generalize on all Americans ?
How does the world get Feature X+Y?
:)
by advertising it as a bug
New fangled American PATRIOT definition of FUD: Fear, Uncertainty and Death
Really!? do you really want a guy whose name rhymes with Iraq and Osama :D
They should teach about the Holocaust and also about the denial; impart only information or content; Let the student decide what he wants to believe.
That explains why (s)he had 12 dudes following him(her!?)...
very interesting...

You can look, but you can't touch.

A stripper once told me that
and *CENSORED* my wife.
Did they do "xxx" or "xxxx" or "xxxxxxx" ? One of them is illegal in the USA.

This guy must have one high opinion of himself and one low opinion of his customers.
Yes, he must be taking lessons from our pal Bill Gates.

In British English corporations are referred to in the plural.
Check for redundancy -- I guess you mean "In English".

or since this is Slashdot, most of the people will not even bother reading the article thus reducing Roland's cash in totality...

Find all the hottest chics you can, explain global warming is ending the world and fucking you is the only thing they can do about it
