Take the power of OpenGL/DirectX to a very basic level for the user in XAML...amazing stuff! I just checked out the MacOS site - Aqua will be a puddle compared to the UI that can be designed in Avalon (with some UI designers who know what they're doing). OK, I've been a Windows fanboy for ages and a *NIX noob, but I tried out that *NIX thing. As a littl history, I have the cmd-line Unix stuff down, gcc, g++, make, etc. because I've primarily SSHed into NetBSD/IRIX machines. All the die-hards tell UNIX is all about simplicity, hence the 17-inch LCD monitors with three text editors open simultaneously. WOW!

So, I downloaded Red Hat 8.0 back in the day, burned 3 CDs and created a dual-boot. I really appreciated the graphical install, because I will DISMISS a product right away if it has a bad installer (unless I have liked the predecessor). However, the killer for me was STARTUP TIME. I opted for KDE 3.0, which combined with Redhat bootup was quite a bit longer than Windows and boring to watch.

I'm far from experienced in IT, and can pick my way among *NIX commands, man to the wazoo, and have the GNU compiler stuff down. So, impress me with an OS that is optimized and doesn't take 4 text-based installs before it works correctly!

From the look of it, this meeting can affect security and other technological international decisions, and those who have supported Kerry might not represent the government's policies out of spite or simply because they aren't pro-US in policies. I do repeat, though, that more information would be useful before I make a definitive decision. Of course many have already had a predisposition about Bush, and already have their favorite list of bullet points and know they'll get their +5 Interesting yet again.

Now that it was backported (with Indigo) to Windows XP/2003 Server, you have a much larger market. Few rarely mention Avalon (and any details) even though two CTP editions have been released to the community and customer feedback is strongly encouraged! 11. Open source...communism or meritocracy? on Open Source Methods Useful Way Beyond Software · · Score: 2, Insightful

The interesting thing about open source is that people can claim that open source is the freeloader's dream while others can claim that it promotes an unprecedented sense of community.

In either case, open source turns on its head some deeply entrenched institutions. For example, in closed-source companies, a college degree is generally a good help to getting a job. However, companies that use open source highly value experience (especially on open source projects) and skill and there is little acceptance for the average programmer.

Right now, I'm graduating college with a CS degree and see many school friends involved in UNIX struggling to find a job. Why? Too much time taking all the credits at college to spend working on FOSS projects that interest them. For all those who bow down at the shrine of Mac, some of you make fools of the entire Mac community. The amount of grand-standing that passes for Apple allegiance is quite galling...

Sure, it's great to say Mac OS X is more secure than Windows XP - it undoubtedly is if you see that they built recent Mac OSes off of *BSD, which has had a long time to deal with security issues. Of course Windows XP, and parts of 2000, and so on are built essentially off of the original codebase from 10 years ago when security was hardly an issue that was discussed. So, yes, Microsoft continues to pay that price and will likely do so until Longhorn (hopefully), where they can build off the (presumably) more secure .NET platform, and rework the OS essentially from the ground up.

Of course the Microsoft time schedule is whacked and they've hardly released anything big even close to on time lately, but that's another issue.

Of course, now we are talking about the invincible Mac OS X, which was designed from the ground up with a focus on security! So it's provable secure, huh? And I guess social engineering tactics that work so well in the Windows world will not work on OS X because "the dialog boxes are clearer"? Writing Mac viruses, while not as easy to write as Windows viruses which have an existing codebase (and even virus wizards), are definitely not impossible!

However, that said, (with apologies to the Symantec developer who already responded) Symantec anti-virus is becoming more and more a pile of BS, with McAfee and free scanners becomming more and more effective. Oh, and since Symantec claims "spyware is not their thing" when you get their bloated antivirus program which hogs tons of system resources, the joke's on them when spyware disables their effectiveness.
