If nobody protested against nuclear power we would just stick with it and not put money into developing and supporting cleaner energy sources. I don't agree with everything Greenpeace does, but I am truly glad those people are out there. Telling them that they are stupid doesn't exactly cut it.
The days your refer to in "Remember the days", as a user with an id close to 2 million, must be long gone. At least since August this year. Maybe even earlier.
take the statistics provided by the app store on number of downloads
You cannot get that information, only the developer has access to his own download numbers. Or did you mean to infer the number of downloads from the rankings? I imagine that would be difficult, you don't know whether game on rank 1 sells twice as much as the game on rank 2 or is only slightly ahead.
Well, considering Papers offers much much more than that -- sync the whole Papers-library from the Mac to the iPad (or even iPhone), Pubmed, ArXIV and tens of other online services integrated into the app, matching of PDFs to PMIDs and doi and more -- the price is justified in my eyes. Also, 10$ is not much for software you use daily, that's what you pay for one meal in the cantina -- ONE meal!
"Apple [...] has typically been last in transitioning to new technology"
That's a pretty bold claim. Apple has often been first transitioning to new technology, whether that was completely moving to USB or shipping the very first Nehalem Desktop computers. And now some of the first computers with Light Peak, but of course, as of now it counts as a disadvantage since there are no peripherals available. In the future people will still claim that Apple is the last to transition to new technology...
Yes, you're right, it has always been opt-in, I'm sorry. Obviously the privacy concerns were that it was not clear to customers that Genius sends listening information to Apple.
Yes, glad to see Apple learned from their mistake enabling "Genius" for everyone when it was introduced and everybody was complaining about privacy. Now it's opt-in, which is a good choice. And while I also think they should split iTunes into at least two apps, iTunes 10 runs somewhat smoother than the previous version. Not perfect, but better, no reason to hold off from upgrading.
So you're saying it's easier to:
* Fix decades of code that refer to Mb so they either say the correct numeric value or change the unit to MiB.
* 'Educate' IT to start saying Mebi and also convince them they don't sound retarded when they say it.
* 'Educate' the public so they don't think their IT person is retarded, but rather talking about a convoluted new scheme to 'fix' things because some people don't understand base-2 verses base-10
Or maybe it's just easier to say: SI prefixes are expressed in powers of ten, unless you're dealing with storage in which case it's SI prefixes in powers of two.
Really?
It will be easier for the generations to come. People will stop asking "Why does my 200 GB harddisk only have 186 GB capacity?". And for all of us who need to "re-learn" what a megabyte is - you read it once and it happened. If you missed all the fuzz, still no problem, nobody will be permanently damaged.
Wouldn't it be about a billion times easier to leave it as 'mega' and just remember that when you are dealing with base 2 methods of storage, it's 1024 (a power of two) rather than 1000 (a power of ten).
The only thing a billion times easier is to have one meaning for one prefix.
What I'm speaking of is not of current iPhone applications, but iPad (and possible future iPhone) apps. A dev told me that this functionality is already available in the iPad SDK.
Also, I seriously doubt you'll be able to transfer files to and from the iPad with anything other than email.
Ask any iPhone/iPad developer: Yes you can. The iPad will mount and each application can share document directories with the computer connected via USB.
Read your own signature and you have the answer to your rhetoric question.

Good to see this as first answer, I came here to suggest R to see I'm not the only one. Go with R!
Fair enough.

If you have a Mac, try Papers on Mac + iPad! Absolutely fantastic.

Medicine is not science? Dammit, if you told me earlier I wouldn't have gone through all the trouble to get my MD-PhD!!
Yes, this is about the 4th time I hear about such a thing on big news sites, guess this must happen very often.
Replace "socializing" with "slacking off" in that very first sentence and everybody will go "like I didn't know".

I know you love your iOS/IOS joke probably as much as I like the MAC/Mac joke, but hey, this kid actually got the spelling right!
What? I always h

Replace the name "Apple" by any big technology company name out there and your statement stays true. Not too insightful after all, is it?

It sometimes hurts to correct old mistakes.

Its also pretty sad that the engineers at NASA never thought of it...
They were probably wasting their time inventing and building GPS so guys like this one could use it.
Oh wait...
Awesome post, totally agree, thanks!
There is, its called the "Internet" The whole thing, not just the bits Steve lets you access.
Yes, and it's all perfectly adapted to the UI of the IdeaPad, optimized to run on its hardware!

I'm pretty sure that praying is absolutely useless, especially in this case...
