  6. Re:Lay off the weed, man! on City-Provided Wi-Fi Rejected Over "Health Concerns" · · Score: 0

You never see EM-sensitive people complain about the sun because it changes intensity very slowly. If it flashed on and off at a rate an epilepsy sufferer had a problem with I bet you'd find they'd complain about it! (even a flashing sunset, too weak to give a tan, would be a problem)

That's the suspected issue with digital radio transmissions - even if the field strength is too weak to cause direct heating effects we still can't be 100% sure than a small minority of people may or may not be sensitive to the pulsed radiowaves which aren't steady in power envelope/time like good old analogue was, or pseudo-randomly changing smoothly like AM in sympathy with natural waveforms like the modulating speech/music.

If you live next to a cellsite you're getting constant exposure to the pulsed stuff all night long as you sleep. Frankly, until we get a lot more evidence in about it, I believe you'd be foolishly unscientific to just dismiss the potential risk and hope for the best. That would be similar to saying electric lights were totally harmless when they were first introduced, oblivious to what we'd later find out about strobes and epileptic fits.

An open mind is more scientific. We all believe in science here, right?

If this caught on I reckon a fair few of us would take chalk (or a spray can) with us and mark out the problem areas as and when we found them - to warn others where NOT to stand to avoid such intrusive devices.

It sounds like it's enough to scare people as badly as creeping up to them and shouting "boo!" - so a few lawsuits after heart attacks should hopefully take care of it.

  15. Re:Three letters: WTF ??!? on Texting Teens Generating OMG Phone Bills · · Score: 0

SMS text messages don't get transmitted on a momentary use of a 'traffic channel' (a timeslot of 1/8 of the capacity of a GSM frequency pair, as usually used for one voice call). A GSM cell basestation is always transmitting on at least one physical frequency pairing, and what's known as the BCCH (Broadcast Control Channel) is one datastream using one of the 8 timeslots on that frequency. This datastream deals with a number of important functions, and I believe it also carries SMS (almost as an afterthought) in the low amount of capacity left over.

Put your mobile phone next to a radio or speakers so that you can hear the interference, and compare the time it takes to send a short or long text message.

You're effectively paying for use of a "scarce resource". At Christmas/New Year the whole system here gets horribly backlogged due to demand, with messages taking hours to get through, even though there are plenty of voice channels spare. Yes, it doesn't actually cost much (if anything!), but as usual they charge because they can. I find I can get a message to my friends within a 10 second voice call, much cheaper than a txt msg.

in other words, rather than jam the radio waves, they put in a 'pico-cell' that all the phones in the theatre connect to (as it's the strongest signal) and that cell disables calls other than emergency ones. Very clever.

Does it need to be connected by the phone companies or does it impersonate a regular cellphone to connect up 999 calls?
