No in America the cases are settled much differently. Usually when you walk into a court room the judge makes each person weigh their wallets. Whoever has the heaviest wallet wins. Of course these day they don't actually use wallets they simply compare bank account amounts.
This is not the only criterea for settling cases though. Frequently the judge(s) will decide the case based on which political party you belong to. The judges that were nominated by your political party will vote for you and the ones nominated by the opposing party will vote against you. This is especially true in higher courts. In the supreme court the judges will vote exlusively along party lines.
Finally a case may be decided based on your race. This is especially true in jury cases. For example if you are white cop and you just emptied bullets into a black man because you confused his wallet for a gun you will be found not guilty if the jury is mostly white. OTOH if you are a black person and you just murdered your wife and her friend you will walk if the jury is mostly black.
In any case ff you are ever arrested you are guaranteed the following things.
1) The trial will take at least two years usually more like 5. 2) You will be bankrupted by the process even if you are eventually aquitted. 3) You will lose your job. 4) You will in all likehood lose your wife and family. 5) You might end up in jail or even put to death even if you are innocent. 6) While you sit in jail waiting for your trial to run it's course you will be repeatedly raped and beaten by the general prison population. If you are found guilty you will continue to be raped and beaten during your encarseration.
Oh one last thing. The US has the best justice system in the world.
Ted has nothing to do with CNN anymore. And how somebody can claim that CNN is as far left as fox is right is completely beyond me. Fox news is nothing but a PR arm of the republican party.
PBS is not turning hard right. I think it's a great loss to balanced and fair journalism but I don't blame them. The republican controlled govt is not going to fund a channel critical of them so PBS has to slant it's news to the right.
As I said I can't blame them but it still makes me sad.
"I'm not saying that MS deserves a humanitarian award. I'm just saying that we shouldn't be criticizing MS because they have pushed back LongHorn. Allowing sufficient time for good development is a GOOD thing."
What on odd claim. Why shouldn't we able to critize any corporation for whatever the hell we want. It's just a fucking corporation, it's not like we are going to hurt it's feelings or something.
It's a sad day in the history of mankind when people claim we should not critize artifical, soul-less, amoral, legal fiction entities.
I say critise MS whenever you want, however you want, for what ever reason you want. It's just a fucking corporation.
" Ultimately, your whole argument is, "well, the tool really doesn't actually work, but its free"."
Huh? You must be confused. My argument was "I would be ashamed if I could not install kdevelop".
"It's appalling that you cannot just install a product for Linux."
No. It's appaling that YOU can't install it. I can install it just fine, so can tens of thousands of other people.
"Oh, and finally, what's up with me having to spend 2k to get a commercial version of the widget library. "
Huh? Why? Where does this come from?
"It's all about "File|Run|Setup"."
Huh? Ask your grandmother to do that once in a while and see what happens?
Look Linux is not for people like you. You are much better off using a Mac. Why you choose to run windows is a mystery, you must be a glutton for punishment.
YOur posting history is there for everybody to see. You can continue to deny that you are a shill but a quick resding will make it apparent. BTW You regularly are called on your shilling by lots of people and your response is always "am not".
As I said you and I are completely different kinds of human beings. I don't think we will ever see eye to eye. I don't get people like you and you will never get people like me.
I guess you'll never get it and I'll never understand you because we are very different human beings.
You are they type of a person who would interject themself into a conversation about a corporation and try to correct some misunderstanding about that corporation. I am not. I don't give a flying fuck about any corporation and it does not bother me if somebody has some misunderstanding about that corporation. I don't feel compelled to set the record straight.
You say what you did but you don't say why you did it. Why did you feel compelled to correct the so called error? I never felt compelled to intervene on behalf of Simms about the socks why did you feel compelled to intervene on behalf of MS?
BTW you were indeed defending MS. You have lots of posts in your history where you defend MS.
I don't know if it still says this but it used to say the following (I have saved the snippet from the license, perhaps you can google for the rest).
"(c) Open Source. Recipient's license rights to the Software are conditioned upon Recipient (i) not distributing such Software, in whole or in part, in conjunction with Potentially Viral Software (as defined below); and (ii) not using Potentially Viral Software (e.g. tools) to develop Recipient software which includes the Software, in whole or in part. For purposes of the foregoing, "Potentially Viral Software" means software which is licensed pursuant to terms that: (x) create, or purport to create, obligations for Microsoft with respect to the Software or (y) grant, or purport to grant, to any third party any rights to or immunities under Microsoft's intellectual property or proprietary rights in the Software.
By way of example but not limitation of the foregoing, Recipient shall not distribute the Software, in whole or in part, in conjunction with any Publicly Available Software.
"Publicly Available Software" means each of (i) any software that contains, or is derived in any manner (in whole or in part) from, any software that is distributed as free software, open source software (e.g. Linux) or similar licensing or distribution models; and (ii) any software that requires as a condition of use, modification and/or distribution of such software that other software distributed with such software (A) be disclosed or distributed in source code form; (B) be licensed for the purpose of making derivative works; or (C) be redistributable at no charge. Publicly Available Software includes, without limitation, software licensed or distributed under any of the following licenses or distribution models, or licenses or distribution models similar to any of the following: (A) GNU's General Public License (GPL) or Lesser/Library GPL (LGPL), (B) The Artistic License (e.g., PERL), (C) the Mozilla Public License, (D) the Netscape Public License, (E) the Sun Community Source License (SCSL), and (F) the Sun Industry Standards License (SISL)."
Many large corporations have a person or a group of people whose sole job is to count licenses. There is tremendous cost involved in simply trying to stay legal with proprietary software.
Wow. If I was a developer and I was unable to install Kdevelop I would be ashamed to admit it. You apprently are proud enough of your failure to broadcast it to the world.
In Utah if jesus ran as a democrat against satan who was running as a republican satan would win. A Utah voter would rather slit his wrists then vote for a democrat.
Liberterians are dreaming. No lberterian will ever get elected to the house or the senate. All an opponent has to do is to say "Mr. So and So is for porstitution, legalized drugs and abortion" to a republican audience and "Mr. So and so is pro guns, wants to privatize education, sell off all the public lands to corporations, and eliminate all enviromental legistlation" to democrats.
Honestly who do they think is going to vote for them?
"Never said they did. Not helping them. Correcting somebody != supporting anybody in particular."
The following is a true story.
Today I was in a sporting goods store. Two people were talking about some fly fishing socks that cost $14.00. One said something like "Why would a sock cost 14 dollars" the other said "Cos it's simms sock I guess. I bet lots of suckers buy it because of the name. I would never pay 14 dollars for a pair of socks, they probably will fall apart a week after you buy them anyway".
The conversation is not verbatim but you get the point. These two people were making fun of Simms socks, the company and the stupid people who would buy their stupid product.
You know what? It never occured to me that I should correct them. It never occured to me that I should say to them that simms makes fine products and the socks were probably worth the 14 dollars.
Why?
Because I don't give a flying fuck about Simms the corporation or their 14 dollar socks. I would not waste 10 seconds of my time trying to stick up for simms. Even if their socks were the best socks in the world I wouldn't give a shit.
So you still haven't answered my question.
Why do you care so much about MS and their products that you feel the need to inject yourself into a conversation on their behalf?
Would you have defended Simms in that situation? Would you have injected yourself into that conversation. Do you routienly correct everybody who says something bad about any product from any corporation? If not why this time? Why MS?
That's a serious question. See if you can answer it, if not for me then for yourself.
"I do not see how operating system choice reflects at all on me as a person. Perhaps you can share some insight, however."
I will be happy to.
First of all you are an ungrateful bastard. When a decent human being gets a gift they don't publicly berate the gift even if they don't like it. A civilized human being might put the gift in a closet and never look at it again or perhaps pass it on to somebody else. They may even throw it in the trash. What they would never do however is to shove it down the face of the gift giver yelling that it's not good as the thing they just paid 700 dollars for. Worse yet they would never badmouth the gift giver and gift to everybody who will listen. That's just rude, ungrateful and uncivilized.
While I am at it.
How you spend your money is more important then how you vote. Every day you make a thousand little choices. Each choice either makes the world a better place or a worse one. More often then not the choice to make the world a better place involves sacrifice and inconvenience. It is often more fun and profitable to increase the net amount of evil in the world.
So every time you buy a MS product or a program that runs on windows you increase the amount of evil in the world. You help fund sleazy unethical businesspeople who put profit above common human decency. You help fund SCO, ADTI and sleaze merchants all over the world. You help MS continue to stifle innovation in IT and maintain their monopoly.
Got it?
"BTW, your post is the archetype of what makes Slashdot's comment section (and lately the news submissions) a joke among the IT community: rudeness, incoherent grammar, typos, fallacy-ridden arguments and rampant groupthink."
I don't care. People have to be told when they are doing the wrong thing. The world will never become better if the good stands by while evil triumphs. We HAVE to speak out otherwise people like you will never realize how much you are hurting the world.
If you don't like to be told that you are wrong you can always go elsewhere. May I reccomend one of the countless MS blogs, hosted by MS, manned by MS employees who do nothing but chant "holy holy holy" while dancing around an effigy of bill gates. Or perhaps you can try gotdotnet where everything not made by MS gets bashed 24X7.
Even though the germans opposed the war I never heard any republican call for boycotting german products. That's because they would have to give up their BMW, Mercedes and of course their german beers.
I guess you can't expect much rationality from a republican.
If you can afford 700 dollars for photoshop you are not the typical linux user. You probably own a mac.
In either case nobody owes you a free program that duplicates all the functionality of a 700 program. Sorry to break that news to you.
For me and tens of thousands of people like me gimp works just fine thank you. I have never attempted to do anything with gimp and not have it work. That's probably because I am not in the graphics business but just an average joe who needs to fiddle with pictures once in a while. I am grateful to the GIMP people for working so hard to make a product that is useful for me. Unrateful snobs can go to hell as far as I am concerned.
Yes but he is French. The president of the United States had the menus on Air Force One changed so they did not contain nasty words like "french fries" and "french toast".
YOu can be pretty sure republicans would never use anything that came out of france. You'd have to pry their german cars out of their cold dead fingers though.
"You're not calling me one because I'm going out of my way to 'support' them. Rather, it's because I'm right in this particular case. (Notice that there's no real rebuttal here, just a little inaccurate name calling.)"
Once again a quick reading of your posting history makes it crystal clear that you are a MS shill.
As for what ever argument you are making that's irrelevant. You are defending a corporation. I don't understand why anybody would take even 10 seconds out of their lives to defend a sleazy unethical ccrporation like MS. It's not like MS doesn't spend millions of dollars hiring PR firms and advertising agencies to push their point of view on us. Why do you think they also need your help? What do you get out of it? Maybe you are on the payroll. That would be the only reason I can think of for somebody to defend bastards like MS.
"Okie doke. If I ever decide to be a shill, I'll keep that in mind. G'nite, sir.:)"
You mean for ford or maytag? Why not? You are already a shill for microsoft, a quick reading of your posts ought to make that crystal clear to anybody who bothers to read them. As long as you are shilling for corporations why not expand your repetoire.
"Yes, obviously, but then, _how come_ there are no standard protocols that fix this?"
There is. It's called CORBA. It's great, it's language independent, OS independed, allows for propogation of events from server to client and vice versa, there are lots of open source servers and every language in the world supports it.
How come nobody uses it? It's "Too Hard" (TM). Which means your typical php, asp, python or perl hacker never took the time to learn it.

Do me a favor, just go back to stealing your software and shut up.
Does the GUI builder use winforms? If so you know that's on the way right? It's all about avalon these days.
