Right because my only choices are china and america right?
Anyway what makes you think the rest of the world wants americans to come live in their country? The standards for citizenship in modern first world countries are pretty rigid you know. You can't just show up on their doorstep and say "Hi I would like to move to your country and take advantage of your participarty democracy and free health care".
I don't see how any of this matters at all. MS could deliver a steaming pile of shit and everybody who bought a new PC would get it anyway whether they liked it or not. In two years all corporations would also be running it too.
It doesn't matter what MS delivers or doesn't deliver. That's the beauty of a monopoly. You have to eat whatever comes out of their bowels.
"Have they personally done something to wrong you??"
Yes. I have worked with windows since version 1 and every single day that I have worked I have cursed them at least once.
"Don't you think there are worse coprorations out there?? I"
Of course there are. But you know what I really hate? I hate apologists who pull this "at least I/my-favorite-corporation isn't as bad as this other one" line. That's like saying "hey don't complain about me stealing your car and raping your girlfriend because I am not as bad as Jeffrey Dahmer" or "sure bush has killed a lot of innocent people but at least he is not as bad as saddam hussein". This excuse only works if your goal in life is to be second worst person in history.
"It's fine if you don't like their products or whatever, don't use them. But wanting them to fail??"
I want to fail because they are bad for the industry, bad for the consumers and bad for business. Yes the world will be a better place once MS fails.
"think if Apple, Novell, and IBM all combined their efforts it would still amount to a snowball's chance in hell of that succeeding..."
It will happen. All empires fail. IBM once was once that invincible, now they are just another player. One day the same thing will happen to MS. They will no longer be able to harm the industry.
Supposedly we also have the courts too. Unfortunately the courts have been packed with partisans who care more about their political party then the constitution of the citizenry. Look at FISA. This supposedly independent panel of judges turned into a kangroo court which simply rubber stamps whatever the executive branch wants. Despite (because?) this the executive branch decided to bypass them and got away with it because the congress critters care more about their party then the country.
It's lost people. That whole "governemt of the people, by the people" experiment set up a couple of hundred years ago has failed miserably.
"But I think you're blaming yourself too much if you really think you "didn't do enough to stop the evil bastards running my country""
i disagree. I think I am at least taking responsibility for my part in the carnage. I must say that's at least better then most people who don't take any responsibility at all.
Dude. MS is going BURY google when this comes out. Google is going to go out of business!. How can they stay in business when MS has MSN? They are going to totally integrate their Xdrive with their desktop and MSN. It will be supercool because you can search your drive and the web and your xdrive from inside of word (only if you have IIS installed though).
Let's see now. Debian, Fedora, Suse/Novell, Ubuntu, Mepis, and knoppix make up the top of the popularity list. Of those only knoppix comes default with KDE.
Since debian, fedora, suse/novell, ubuntu, and sun desktop are the only distros businesses use for business it's unanimous for gnome.
"As someone who works at MS, I do find it annoying how certain people brand the entire company as "evil" based on the history of certain actions,"
MS is a corporation. Thats kind of like a human being with all the rights and such.
I judge a human being by what he or she does. If my neighbor blares music all night I judge him to be a jerk, if he destroys property belonging to other people I judge him to be evil. Same with MS.
"If I work for an "evil company", does that make me evil? "
No it makes you an enabler, a cog in the machinery, a useful pawn.
"I'm not a lawyer, or in marketing, or in business planning, where a lot of the evil decisions come from."
Do you have to be? Doesn't every member of a team contribute in some way to the end result?
"Plus it's a practical decision too (it doesn't hurt that the pay is nice)."
Yes, this is a very common response in all organizations. Even in the military. I am sure many of saddams soldiers were in the exact same position.
"Just because you dislike the administration doesn't mean the US as a whole should be called "evil". I don't like the US administration, but there's enough good in the country that I'm not moving anywhere. Does that make me evil? Or just practical?"
No just a cog in the wheel like I said. I am an american, I hate bush, I mean I HATE bush, I am deeply ashamed of what my country is doing. Like it or not though I am partially responsible for what my country does. Those are my tax dollars being used to kill innocent people all over the world. I didn't do enough to stop the evil bastards running my country. It's partially my fault.
"Last I checked, I didn't choke babies, run over old ladies, or kill innocents, while trying to do a good job."
No but you played a part in perpetuating spam by helping to kill inititives like SPF, you have caused tens of thousands of sysadmins immense headaches by not playing nice with open standards and open source software, you have put many people of jobs, you have caused suffering for millions of windows users who have suffered from spyware and virueses.
I guess all that's not as bad as choking babies or running over old ladies but the fact that you consider anything other then choking babies to be OK says a lot about you doesn't it.
These are code names, not the name of the product. The name of the product will be ubuntu + versionnumber just like all the other software packages in the world.
You are merely complaining because they let you know what the internal code name for the project is. Sheeesh, get a life will you.
If people are not willing to help you for free for a product you paid nothing for then maybe you should stop using their piece of shit free product and stop hanging out with the arrogant assholes. I mean these people are mean and stupid and their product is second rate right?
So why didn't you just use the cisco and be happy with the kind and gentle cisco users?
I hate microsoft. I hate them with a passion that might be called zealotry. I just want MS to fail. If linux can do that then fine. If Apple, or IBM or Novell does it that's fine too.
There is no GNOME vs KDE. All major distros come with GNOME as the default desktop. GNOME has won this war. KDE is there for the people who want to download and use it and that's wonderful but the default is GNOME for 90% of the people who use linux.
Distributions: Well just choose one and stick with it.
The rest: Go yell at the manufacturers for not providing drivers. Don't ask other people to risk litigation trying to reverse engineer drivers for you. If you want people to risk jail put some money on the table to make the risk worthwhile.
Unfortunately integration is only possible if both players want to co-operate. The problem is that people like you often ask for the impossible or the illegal and then complain loudly and abusively when what you want is not given to you on a silver platter.
The ugly fact is that MS does not want to play nice with OSS products and is especially hostile to the GPLed ones. Nobody in the open source community can help it if exchange, AD, windows file server, etc uses proprietary protocols. Some people risk litigation and try to reverse engineer this stuff and sometimes they are pretty successful at it but that's them. The problem is the people like you want everybody to take the same type of risks. In this day of the DMCA you are just going to have to get used to the fact injecting MS products into your network means that you will always have problems with integration. Not just with OSS stuff either but with other vendors as well.
Maybe, just maybe the "newbies" can take some responsibility. Maybe then can start bitching at the people who are making their lives miserable (MS, hadware manufacturers who don't provide drivers, politicians who pass draconian laws, corporations who lobby for these laws etc) instead of bitching at the people who are providing them free software and trying their best deal with deluge.
The attitude "newbies" is ten times worse then the attitude of the RTFM people. Nothing but a bunch of ungrateful and sometimes hateful bile directed at developers without being willing to lift a finger to help solve the problem. Most newbies who bitch and moan will not even be bothered to post config files or log entries for gods sake.
Finally. It really really really does get annoying to answer the same fucking question for the hundredth time you know. I mean if the answer is in the FAQ or the manual why is everybody obligated to keep answering it for the idiots who can't be bothered to read it? Why is it so much of a burden for you guys to read a web site? Honestly please answer that for me? Why is it too much to ask you to read the documentation? How come you take so much affront when somebody asks you to do that.
"Seriously, people need to check themselves before using the words "good" and "evil" when discussing software companies. "
Really? Why? MS is a corporation why should it be above judgement for it's actions?
Would it make you feel better if we used terms like sleazy, unethical, destructive, sociopathic?
MS is evil, get over it. If it wasn't for them spam would be history by now but they fought hard to kill SPF. MS is a dangerous, disruptive, and harmful entitiy in the software ecosystem. They fight standards at every step, they choke off the commons, they destroy everything in their path.
So let me get this straight. You were invited to your neighbors house. You showed up. They served you dinner. You told them that their kids were ugly, and the mom was a horrible cook, and their house was messy.
They got angry at you and you are SHOCKED I TELL YOU SHOCKED!.
Ungrateful rude people like you should never be surprised when you elicit angry responses.
"If the user wants your software to do something it doesn't do, that does not mean the user OR the request is stupid. Dismissing needs is probably the second cardinal sin of opensource developers."
I want microsoft word to do my taxes. I want excel to check my mail. Oh and I don't want to pay or help in any way. If you don't give me what I want for free you are zealot and dirty communist hippie.
I's day that that was the majority really. The only people who are hoping that it become mainstream desktop are businesses that sell linux and people who want free replacements for photoshop and autocad.
The rest of would be perfectly happy if there was just enough linux desktop users to stop idiots from coding IE only web sites and for hadware mannufacturers to write drivers.
Anyway not all companies are as sleazy as MS are they now? I mean there are people with actual morals who run corporations arent there?
I get your point though. Most corporations are sociopathic in nature. If they were humans they would be serial killers. Corporations feel no empathy for the suffering of others and can not control their impulses just like serial killers.
That's because Apple does not have a monopoly and is unable to wield their nonexistant monopoly in order to destroy the competition and to rip off the consumers.
"I thought the whole point of golf was to drive a wedge between the haves and have nots."
No that's the whole point of the wall street journal.
Right because my only choices are china and america right?

I said "most" not all. MS is an especially sleazy, immoral, and evil corporations. Other are less evil, some are not evil at all.
Supposedly we also have the courts too. Unfortunately the courts have been packed with partisans who care more about their political party then the constitution of the citizenry. Look at FISA. Man google is dead now.
Then I suggest you go to the local gallery and ask some of the artists there to write software for you.
When they do be sure to piss all over them and tell them how much it sucks too, I hear they love that.
Slackware?
Let's see now.
Debian, Fedora, Suse/Novell, Ubuntu, Mepis, and knoppix make up the top of the popularity list. Of those only knoppix comes default with KDE.

I want to ask honestly.
How do we know this is not a part of a astro turfing campaign?
