It may not be a big east coast city, but it certainly does have its crime and bad areas in the wake if the steel mills closing. Is Gary Indiana, ~100,000 people, a midwestern town where life moves a little slower? Gary has the highest crime rate in the country. Gary is an extension of Chicago, and Canton is an extension of Cleveland/Akron. Former steel towns are not nice places.
It woulden't really suprise me if they changed their mind, but it would probably really work out to benefit them if they do go forward with the compatability. I am another who purchased a 939 motherboard and 3200+ with the intention of upgrading to dual core in 2 or 3 years. Unlike Intel, AMD does not make chipsets, so there is no loss for them there if people don't buy new mobos, but a lot of people will be more inclined to upgrade if they can keep their mobo, which is a big win for them. It makes a lot of buisness sense to keep the current socket.
This news bit had been posted on anandtech a bit ago, and seems decently reliable and realistic. 2.8ghz for $241 isn't bad at all, pricing is right between today's prices for a 3.2 and 3.4. I personally though am waiting for AMD's dual cores which will supposedly work on my current motherboard, though it looks like at first the only dual core will be an FX processor, with the insane price that goes with that.
To all the high schoolers out there: Remember this when you take your college entrance tests. My ACT english score rose by 4 when someone told me to remember that. It was on the test 3 or 4 times.
I'll believe that when I see it though, I don't think Intel would do it if only for the reason it's not as marketable.
Of course its marketable. The new model number scheme puts the p4 at 4xx, while the M is 6xx. Thats 200 more. It must be a lot better. I knew they'd do this as soon as they came out with the model numbers.
Note: I'm not a moron. I'm just writing what "joe sixpack" thinks.
That joke is so damn old. I installed gentoo on my p3 900 laptop in 2 days, including X and KDE and firefox. Did it from knoppix, so I had a fully functional system the whole time it was working. Also, theres binaries for a lot of big packages, so I probably could have done it in a couple hours if I really felt like it. Think of a new joke already.
The big question... does it actually work and take care of everything?
Yes. The only other thing you might want to do (though its usually not necessary) is to update the profile. After an emerge -u world, everything will be current. With gentoo version numbers mean next to nothing. New versions are usually just updates to the installer livecd itself to fix bugs and support more hardware. The packages are updated constantly, not just when new gentoo releases come out.
I actually find the opposite. Every time I go there I get a dude who tells me about how he's hosting webpages from a raid5 out of his basement to see if I actually know what he's talking about. After he finds out I'm not an idiot I usually get totally ignored, though if I do have questions I usually get pretty good answers.
Agreed. I'm all for people scamming the mail in rebates. If enough people do, maybe they'l get rid of em and just sell the stuff for a good price without the hassle.
While it may outperform Intel's integrated graphics solution, it is outperformed by even the cheapest discreet cards. Anandtech's review shows it outperformed by ATI's own x300 SE, which is the cheapest pci-express card out there. However, going this route probably will be quite a bit cheaper. The x300 SE is selling for $66 on newegg, while mobos with integrated graphics don't seem to sell for too much of a premium over those without, so this could be good for buisness buyers who use apps that mildly push graphics chips. However, this is not news for gamers, as many games will be unplayable on the integrated graphics, with low framerates and poor rendering quality compared to what most gamers are used to.
Do you think Kerry's $300M campaign, and the hundreds of experts who worked it for the better part of two years, just said "Oh, well! Guess we lost, even though there's proof of widespread fraud! Let's just throw in the towel and not say anything about it!"
It is possible that Kerry's campaign suspected or even knew about widespread fraud, but decided the country would be better off if it was not brought up, even if it meant him unfairly loosing. Think about the chaos that would follow if it were shown that the election was rigged. That chaos would probably be far greater than even what Bush can stir up with wacky policy. I really hope (and have to believe) that the election was legitimate, but if it wasn't, the only right think to do in Kerry's position was to concede. If widespread fraud that changed the outcome could be shown the nation would be divided by a few orders of magnitude more than it is already.
Mahoning county, a democratic stronghold has diebolds. They are also known for a long history of fraud and shady dealings at all levels of government. 5 or 6 years ago most of the county judges, the sherrif and a bunch of other officials were put in jail for mafia related crimes. Our US house representative Jim Trafficant was kickout out of the house into jail about 2 years ago. Basically anything is for sale to the highest bidder. The county did go largely democratic, but not by as wide a margin as I thought it would...
Manhattan results: 82% Kerry, 17% Bush
I know its historically a very liberal area, but you'd think the terrorism threat is a lot more important there than anywhere else, and it was still a democrat landslide. Not that it matters now... all those people on farms in Nebraska were too worried about terrorism.
If we worked it by popular vote, only fewer than 10 states would be needed to win the election. That is not very representative either.
And how many states were really up for grabs in this election? Same deal either way. New York and California got almost no attention.
It was horrible in Ohio, I'm actually grateful to see regular commercials on tv now. Ironically with all the attention given to ohio no one had any idea what the issues were anyway.
You must be a bush supporter if you think the 1 vote thing will fly. It could be a landslide popular vote for a democrat, but states like Idaho and Wyoming would probably cause republicans to win. Thats the worst idea i'v ever heard.
If it was strictly popular vote, the spread would matter, and more states would count. Remember also, I could probably run an ad on every Tv station in most of the plains and mountain region and have it cost about the same as running one in just New York City. Straight popular vote would make everyone count.
If I gave my children the vote, it'd be candy for every meal, and staying up all night. Requiring vegetables and a bed time isn't popular, but it is the right thing to do.
Bush is getting himself for every metaphorical political meal. You don't think this war is fun for him like kids playing with thier little green soldiers or GI Joe's?
Its kind of a scarry point that for every political troll like that on slashdot, there are a whole lot of people who really truely believe what they are saying (not from reading slashdot, just share that attitude). I was watching NBC's today this morning, and one of the commentators was talking about what a powerful and moving voice right wing christian fundamentalists who believe in literal creationalism have, and how thats just as important as someone in Manhattan. What the fuck has happened to our country? I agree they should have a vote just like someone who actually doesn't have thier head up thier ass, but no one who knows anything about politics and the world should say they were right. Seperation of church and state is gone. We have just legislated hate and religion in 11 states, including my own (ohio) with the banning gay marriage issue. Even AARP aired commercials against this, and I didn't see a single political commentator who was supposedly nonpartisan on TV support it. Maybe its the "liberal media," but maybe its understanding what the constitution means by seperation of church and state. But no one cares. They vote motivated by emotion and what hate, and don't give a damn about minotities. I was talking about it at work last night, and found out aparently Ohio was the first state to allow interracial marriages. A really scarry thing about that is that if banning interracial marriage was put on the ballot it would most likely pass in ohio, and I guarantee it would pass in a lot of other states too. Its a sad state when the very same group that came to this country to escape persecution is now legislating it. People say how horrible and opressive the governments in the middle east are, but these very same people that think we should bring our millitary in and install "democracy and freedom" over there would be very happy if our own government was a theocracy that took away as many of our rights as it could that didn't agree with christianity. The type of american who votes for Bush has the exact same attitudes as the middle eastern terrorists. I guarantee if we would have a theocracy of any other religion get controll in the US they would start a crusade/jihad and hijack planes and blow themselves up in the name of god. Essentially we really have become counter-terrorists motivated by hate and political gain, just like Osama is.
11:34 pm in ohio the CNN exit polls showed males going 51-49 for Kerry, females 53-47 for Kerry. Everyone was done voting, I live in Cleveland and was following closely. The current CNN polls show males going 52-47 for Bush, women split 50-50. I seriously doubt it takes that long to get it ot the newsroom, and anyway they were declining all night, I was refreshing every 5 minutes or so at work.
Anyone else notice that CNN's exit polls changed dramatically after the polls closed? Both Ohio and Florida showed Kerry winning the exit polls around 9 pm, but now both states show Bush ahead in the exit polls. Is there an explanation for this? I had assumed the numbers were from polling people leaving the actual polling places, so they shoulden't change after the polls close.
I already posted this to another story, but it probably fits better here.

Kind of offtopic, but it really is true the the terms memory and hard drive don't mean anything to most people, and it took me quite a while to realize it. People are always asking me to fix thier computers when they have spyware problems, and are all worried because they have a couple games and mp3s on thier 80 gig hard drive, and think they have filled all the "memory." I have a hell of a time convincing everyone that having used 5 gigs of that 80 gig drive is no big deal and they don't have to delete everything to improve performance, though at the same time I have a hard time convincing them to turn off all the useless apps they have running in the system tray.

Lloyd Braun failed at Yahoo. Haha. That will teach my mom, she keeps saying "Why can't you be more like that Lloyd Braun?"
300 GB SCSIs are already out. Pretty impressive for a 10kRPM drive, its 4 platters, so 75G/platter.
Incidently the cookie expires at the same time the 32bit unix clock expires. Looks like someone just felt like making it expire at 2^32...

No word on pricing yet

Doh. I really need to use preview. Add in "Candy" between "himself" and "for" there.

Its got the tire fire, and Crackton, my two favorate springfield landmarks. The creators did an excelent job.
I had to check netcraft on this one (linuxsucks.org) and guess what? http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/?host=linuxsuc ks.org
Been up for ~200 days too. Not bad.
