    you do not take into account that all other things being equal the car with the better milage would get you a better selling price.
    so you dont have to recoop all of the 5K before selling.

    And to make thins even worse.

    In areas near the coast you can have sound-changing layers because of diferences in salt content
    and local hotspots because of islands and other fun stuff.

    Leason. never chase a sub in a archipelago. It is a easy way to die.

    The US has an are that is about 11.5 times the area of sweden+norway.

    it has about the same mix of urban/rual areas.

    and it has abut 21 times as many inhabitants.

    It also has a greater GNP.

    So the fact that it has worse broadband is despite having better prerequisites.

    And total area is irelevant. We can start to compare the US to europe and you will se the same difference.

    Improvements in wind power (primaly Denmark and Sweden)
    computerprogram that sharply reduses the fuelconsumption of Airplanes by carefull selection of flightpaths (Sweden)
    improved manufacture of solar cells (Norway /sweden)
    better dry-cleaning mashines (sweden/germany)
    better methods for packing concrete (sweden)
    improved jetengines (sweden)
    methanol and bio gas from Black liquor (sweden)
    improved heatexchangers using nanotecnology.(sweden)
    improved ballbearings (sweden)

    That is just a short list from one country in the EU.
    anyone with some time can find simmilar projects all over the EU.
    So NO the US does NOT get MORE credit because they dont DO MORE.

    Legislate that a company is only allowed to collect the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM of data
    neded to legaly upphold its obligation against the customers.

    This will lessen the amount of data that can be shared /C

    Even though the parrent was trying to be funny a space catapult is a sensible idea.
    It would drasticly reduce the cost to throw things into space.

    One idea is to put a linear acellerator on the side of mount kilimanjaro (strategic position near equator)
    and use it to "kickstart" rokets. this way you can get more payload from a smaller rocket that uses less fuel. /C

    That is a bit more than 50 years if we just change reactor type, and then there are thorium and so on and so on. /C

    You dont have sun 24H/day unless you put the pannels in a realy high orbit. and if you do you will have some small problems with aiming the beam for the groundstations.
    (+ the satelite will cirkle the globe so you dont get the power all the time.)

    so start laying down the big supraconductors around the world :)

    no vouchers and no problem :)
    The EU just stated that any manufactuer of electronics had to take back their products att no cost and take care of them.

    Sery simple legislation and the companies had to solve the problem. their solution was to contract the recycling companies and give a set amount for each pieceof kit returned. Minimum cost for consumers and no goverment overhead.

    (added bennefit: companies figured out that products that are simpler to recycle will be cheaper and have moved to better design.) /C

    Evolution is slow, with minor changes each time, but all the minor stages between Ape and Human died out for some reason.


    This is a common misconception. The Apes we have today are not the apes we evolved from.

    both humans and apes have evolved in parrallel over the years.

    and all the "old" wersions have dissapeard because we New and improved pushed them of the map. :)

    OK lets look logically about this.
    1) Person claims surprising fact that flies against conservative knowledge. (Most examples from pre 1900)

    2) Conservative knowledge takes x years (20-80) to accept the fact that 1 is correct. Meanwhile it is ridiculed or ignored

    3) New consensus is reached.

    Side note: this mostly happens when powerful factors oppose the result mostly because of religious political or economical reasons.
    Other startling revelations are verified in a matter of years.

    Lets apply it on global warming.
    1) 1896 a new idea arrives. That man could warm the globe by burning fossil fuel.

    2) Idea is ignored and/or ridiculed until around 1970.

    3) The amount of evidence over the last few years have forced the scientific community into the NEW consensus that global warming is caused my man. And we now try to find out the parameters.

    side note: the idea of global warming have been opposed by powerful political and economical interests.

    Seems that Crichton is proving our point :) /C

    have a look at http://www.skytran.net/
    Their consept solves some of the major problems that have keept the car a better option than comunal transportation.

    skytran has:
    1) no waiting (spare "pods" on every station)
    2) point to point transportation. (every "pod" is independently routed)
    3) high point to point speed (no intersections and no intermediate stopps.)
    4) cheap. (no driver so costs are only material)

    There are still several tecnical hurdles to overcome but this is the best idea for a future trasnsportation i have ever seen. /C
