    And what is basic about Microsoft Windows? What fundamental skills does one develop by using Microsoft Office, as opposed to using Open Office.org? Will our children become better citizens by interacting with Clippy? Will they learn artby using MS Paint?

    Yes, it's easy. Heaven forbid we challenge our students.

    So, Visual Studio is more powerful than GNU Emacs? What languages does VS support? Emacs supports TeX/LaTeX, C/C++, Perl, Python, HTML, . . .

    And how does one do this when the keyboard and mouse are frozen? On Linux, one uses telnet or SSH (or whatever) to access the errant machine. Does Windows have a telnet/SSH server?

    Well, there isn't much that Linux developers can do about the way that NVidia releasing its code, so if it were a feature of NVidia, there wouldn't be much that they could do.

    Hmm. . . Gladwell's criticism of SUV's is similar to criticisms of Microsoft software: that both favor appearance over reality, reducing the control that the operator has, and fostering a sense of passivity in the operator.

    Not quite, one of them left early. Unfotunately (for him), he accepted a ride from Odd Job (Goldfinger's Steve Ballmer) to the airport, but wound up in a car compacter instead.

    Can we quote you when people criticize Linux for not having good drivers? After all, the hardware manufacturers are much friendlier to Microsoft.
