Would your parents run Linux as root? How easy is it to accidentally install Apache? Also, why would YOU (Yast Online Update) be harder for them to run (preferably automatically)?
While emacs may not be an integrated development environment, it is an integrating development environment, as it supports editing many different kinds of files (.c,.tex,.py and so on).
I'll leave aside your claims that certain software sucks and focus on your complaint that Linux should "standardize" on a single browser.
Why?
What if that browser has problems? What if different users want different browsers?
How?
How would the community exclude a browser?
Also, the standards for browsers are enacted by w3c, not the Linux community. You seem to be confused between a standard and an application that runs by that standard.
But what of the cost? We don't have an infinite budget for defense. Or for car safety, for that matter. We could spend more money to make cars safer (better collision resistance), but at some point it isn't worth it.
Also, how does disabling GPS stop a suitcase nuke? Unless the suitcase is in a GPS navigated missile?
But who has the burden of proof?
What? Wasn't it part of MIT's Athena project?

Eclipse may be cool, but does it handle LaTeX?
And what OS(es) were they running?
A car made in Yugoslavia. Reputed to be not of the highest quality.
P. J. O'Rourke once wrote that the Dodge Viper was like that ugly date who could perform between the sheets. Is this how you feel about Perl?
In your int foo example above, would I have to have a value for all of the dimensions except the first?
int foo(int a[][M][N])
If one wanted to have an array optimized for number crunching, wouldn't one use valarray instead of vector?
The license binds the software to the CPU.
You mean that eclipse doesn't have a TeX/LaTeX mode? :-)
Ah yes, another Microsoft only "standard"
TeX/LaTeX could do a lot of what Microsoft Word does, although the user interface might require some learning.
There's always LyX.
Word is better than TeX/LaTeX?
Then why did Galileo publish his work in Italian, rather than Latin?
Also, how would one test the validity of closed-source development. At least with FOSS one can see the code.
So one cannot reformat a mounted (in use) partition in Windows. Sorry.
Wouldn't you use fsck instead?
But how could you reformat a mounted drive in Linux?
Why don't your roaming profiles give you access to your development tools?
And his gcc boosted Linux adoption. So?

Hmm. . . Suse 9.2 Pro comes with several gigabytes of software, so how much software does Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Include?
But can you run a program with it?
I suspect that people might prefer to have more, not fewer, browsers bundled with Microsoft Windows.
