    Would your parents run Linux as root? How easy is it to accidentally install Apache? Also, why would YOU (Yast Online Update) be harder for them to run (preferably automatically)?

    While emacs may not be an integrated development environment, it is an integrating development environment, as it supports editing many different kinds of files (.c, .tex, .py and so on).

    Eclipse may be cool, but does it handle LaTeX?

    TeX/LaTeX could do a lot of what Microsoft Word does, although the user interface might require some learning.

    There's always LyX.

    I'll leave aside your claims that certain software sucks and focus on your complaint that Linux should "standardize" on a single browser.

    Why?

    What if that browser has problems? What if different users want different browsers?

    How?

    How would the community exclude a browser?

    Also, the standards for browsers are enacted by w3c, not the Linux community. You seem to be confused between a standard and an application that runs by that standard.

    I suspect that people might prefer to have more, not fewer, browsers bundled with Microsoft Windows.

    But what of the cost? We don't have an infinite budget for defense. Or for car safety, for that matter. We could spend more money to make cars safer (better collision resistance), but at some point it isn't worth it.

    Also, how does disabling GPS stop a suitcase nuke? Unless the suitcase is in a GPS navigated missile?
