  1. Re:Immediate Counterexample: on The 'Robotic Psychiatrist' Answers · · Score: 1

    1. I wrote this for an honors intro to research class. 2. The roomba does not interpret, it calculates. Honestly you could say that we do the same thing, just calculations, but there is an abstract layer of understanding that we as Humans have which is currently unquantifiable. Meaning making is another term for it. This is why online translation programs suck, because they can calculate and run algorithms, but they cannot interpret. If they could, then the translation for I like food, would not turn into I want to launch a rocket in to my banana. (exaggeration)

  2. Nice on The 'Robotic Psychiatrist' Answers · · Score: 5, Interesting

In my first semester at college I wrote a similar paper on reliance of robotic devices as domestic replacements, and on a larger scale humanoid replacements. The main difference is that my paper lead to the conclusion that robots will only replace the repetitive tedious tasks, which rely on direct stimuli. No interpretation of any sort. Once you get to the interpretation level you are focusing more on AI and other systems, that I personally believe will never be acheived. Nonetheless, the ability for multitudes of devices to invade our homes, and we willingly accept it, is scary. Because at one point we will wake up in the morning and realize we have no control, and that if the power goes out we will all die.

  3. Re:Linspire are Lassholes on Linspire Accused Of Misusing Creative Commons Art · · Score: 2, Interesting

I do not know. Linspire is trying really hard to gain a niche in the desktop market, and while Microsoft undoubtedly has shot their momentum down to nothing, they haven't given up. Im not defending their misuse of artwork or anything else but as a linux distribution, especially one that charges for the distro, I am sure that Linspire has a strong desire to correctly protect IP laws. And while I know I would be upset if someone misused my work, it was just a flash intro on the website. Honestly, it could have been much worse.

  4. Portage-NG on Gentoo Linux Announces Gentoo Linux 2004.1 · · Score: 1, Interesting

Supposedly Gentoo is switching Portage over to a new system (moving away from python, and to another language), and I thought it was happening soon(like 2004.0), but possibly not. Does anyone else have any idea on when this is happening, because apparently its a big step for Gentoo?

Well honestly this is a good step in the direction for linux adaptation. And linux has real player anyways, but the adoption of major programs can easily lead to a higher conversion to linux, especially for people tied closely to certain apps. Btw, even if it is not licsensed fully, xine does a good job of playing real streams and of playing streaming window media feeds.

Wow, this must have been a tough descision for daniel to make, I mean its almost like putting your kid up for adoption. I am an avid gentoo user, and this terrifies me. I hope that someone will step up and fill his shoes, because otherwise gentoo may be facing the road of other distros, a slow and painful death.

  8. What about Python? on MySQL and Perl for the Web · · Score: -1

Python is used in Zope, www.zope.com, and its pretty impressive in itself. While perl definately had its time in the sun, especially when there wasn't much competition, now its just punk'd. Perl can still be used, but so can Fortran (not that those are equally comparable), but both are still useable. Though again php is gonna hit the same point especially when .net is deployed and C# is taking over the market. Web scripts are slowly being replaced with web services, and for the linux user in me, I am terrified. I say keep it server side, and if you can't make it a program, not a webservice, but again thats just me trying to fight the inevitable.
