One could argue that before the advent of recent technology, scarcity was not an artificial thing. If you wanted to produce good music, you had to be able to play it. Noone else played like Bach, therefore Bach performances were scarce. (and he made his living as a performer, not a composer)

The technology to record and duplicate those recordings easily changes things fundamentally. Some form of copyright is a good thing. But what we have now is not it.

Find an agent, preferrably something combat related. (Any of the navy corporations, for example. Or any agent related to security) Run combat missions. You get semi-instanced encounters with a lot more stuff to deal with, and far better rewards.

If you havn't run the chain already, I recommend going through the mission sequence that your starter agent gives you. The reward at the end is a stat boosting implant, along with a sizable standing gain with your faction. Standings determine what quality agents you can use. (increasing your rewards)

Even mission running can get tedious after a while. But it's good money, and alot more consistent than hunting rats in belts. If you really want excitement, you should get involved in the PVP scene. I don't recommend doing it solo though. Find a group thats willing to teach a new guy. (More outfits will do this than you'd expect) Dispite popular belief, a new pilot can be very useful for fleet engagements with only a few weeks of skill-training under their belt. You would most likely start out as a tackler. A frigate that locks down a bigger target while the rest of the team kills it. It's exciting, educational, and most importantly: CHEAP.

Regarding stacks: If you don't like the icon, there is a workaround. Basically make a junk file with a custom icon of your choice. Then set its last modified date way in the future. It will always show as the top of the stack.

Here's a hint: You don't need to mine to make money. At all. Ever. Train your combat pilot and run combat missions. If you fancy PVP, then go do that. I guarantee you, the real thing holding you back from using whatever awesome ship you're talking about isn't skilltraining. It's the money and support structure to properly utilize it.

There are actually a good amount of us Linux Gamers. We use WINE to run them. Our numbers wont show up in steam as Linux, because the OS detection wont detect it as Linux. Some Mac people also do this. If companies would use OpenGL instead of DirectX, it would be very easy to port the game to a different OS, it would mostly be recompiling source code. If companies would start being smart and not making their software for only Windows, they would make a lot more money. You missed my point. GP stated that Mac/linux showed lower numbers than Vista. I pointed out that is because Valve doesn't make anything for Mac/Linux. (hence no users)

I'm well aware of the existance of linux and mac gamers. I personally use a Mac. And your post simply reinforces my opinion that WINE is a bad thing. Why should software manufacturers make platform agnostic code when users are willing to run under Cedega/WINE?

Those numbers in a vacuum don't mean anything though. What was the upgrade rate from ME/2k to XP? Also, I don't know whether they do or not, but if they're complaining about developing only for Vista, I sure hope they don't have anything that is *nix/Mac compatible, as Vista easily beat every flavor of those. Steam is Windows only, so I'd be suprised if you see any numbers for mac or linux. (Okay, they have linux versions of their dedicated server software)

I'm not a PvPer and that's OK in WoW, because there's plenty of content for us care bears. Technically, theres plenty of this in Eve as well. High-sec space is usually 99% safe from non-consentual PVP. Any unprovoked attack is a suicide run for the attacker. So only sufficiently high-value targets are worth suiciding. Don't carry goods worth billions of isk in a paper boat afk, and you're fine. Even low sec is relatively safe if you're smart. Avoid high traffic areas, and pay attention to your surroundings. 0.0 is more 'wild west' but you know what you're getting into if you're going there in the first place.
  21. Re:Wow! on EVE Online's Linux/Mac Client Goes Live Tuesday · · Score: 1

They're really two totally different games, and totally different communities. So it's difficult to draw comparisons.

In WoW, if some 70 decides to gank in STV, you're pretty much screwed if you're levelling there. You can't do anything to evade them, and unless you have some level 70 friends, you can't fight him.

In Eve, a ganker can be evaded if you know what you're doing. Also, a group of newer players with a couple weeks of skill training under their belts can turn the tables on a lone ganker in a larger ship. It's a much more tactical game, and skillpoints do not guarantee victory.

Eve supports corporate espionage because they provide all the tools you need to protect yourself. People fail to secure things properly, and get burned. CCP has been married to DirectX from the start. That pretty much makes it Windows dependant. Since they're basically rebuilding the graphics engine anyway for a big update, you'd think it would be a perfect opportunity to make native clients for multiple platforms. But instead they decided to move to DX10. Yay.

This is why I think Wine is a bad idea. It's a cop-out. The fact that you can hack up programs to run on something other than Windows is no excuse for failing to support the platform. Wine gives developers less incentive to make platform independent software, and that's a BAD thing.
