How do you measure downtime? A few minutes or hours OR A FUCKING FEW DAYS because the BOARD IS TRASHED?

There's this amazing thing called "The Cloud", you rent a piece of it and spin up a virtual server of your choice (I tend to go for CentOS because production should *not* be "bleeding edge"). The Cloud rarely goes down, and when it does it's not because some board got fried (there are exceptions).

  3. Funny part is that there was a prompt for "are you sure?"

The thing is, like all state of the art systems of this sort, it's run on NT or Win95, so Clippy is involved.

  4. There's that term again, "AI"... Is it really?

Computer algorithms that automate and change and actually add to human generated tracks are nothing new.

Well, it did achieve low-earth orbit... just somewhat lower than planned, and its tidally locked with the planet. But it's still orbiting once every 24 hours.

If only we had a spacecraft that could maneuver close to it, grab it with a big arm, put it in the spacecraft's payload bay, and take it where it was supposed to go. That would be amazing.

My first thought is that what he's talking about sounds a lot like way back in the stone age when you had to work your way through different "exchanges" to maybe possibly reach Aunt Flo on the other side of the country, by negotiating with various operators...

If anyone worked in that agency with a sincere desire to protect the American people and inform their national leaders of threats against the country, then that person's motivation is going to evaporate. When your leader has basically announced that he won't extend any consideration or trust to your organization, is there any value to your work? At the end of the day, what will all of your efforts accomplish?

And that's the problem: The pay is *not bad* though less than private for some folks. So what's the motivation to stay? Serving your country and all that. When the President starts bad-mouthing what you do, why you do it, and calling into question your patriotic motivations, YES, it's no longer worth it.

This is why I've just left Federal servoce.

  20. Police represent the State.
    Police/State under threat.
SMS invokes a well regulated militia to come to the State's aid.

In the event that our Law Enforcement ever needs a "well regulated" militia, they're not going to find it by alerting a bunch of fat red-necks in tactical vest with AR-15's and such. What is meant by "well regulated militia" is called the National Guard .

For example when Katrina went down and the National Guard was called out.

Or that big earth quake in California. The National Guard was called out.

Or the situation with wild fires. The National Guard is helping on that one, too.

Or massive flooding in the Mississippi River drainage - I believe the National Guard helped out on that one.

Or back on 9/11, the National Guard was called out to secure airports...

See the trend in these examples?

  21. Yes, this is a good idea, let's all converge on the scene of a shootout... Or whatever.

On the one hand, with typical "police behavior", often we are lucky when there are "citizen" observers.

On ywt another hand, this presents a safety danger with unknown consistences many of which are not good.

Another aspect that comes to mind is that this is just one more step in the direction of a "Police State" where our Law Enforcement are seen as some holy religious order, our Priests in Blue... We've all seen these 200 car processions when a police officer is killed in the line of duty...

    I don't think this is a well thought-out idea.
