He seems to hinge everything on the assumption that Microsoft is going to follow whatever version on OOXML is adopted, allowing ODF to be able to port those features. I think that's a huge assumption on his part.
I couldn't believe anyone at Microsoft would actually say something like that in public, so i had to read the article to see it myself. I am no fan of Microsoft's business practices or products, but I would like to believe that that employee was misquoted somehow.
Being an international student myself, I find that I have a much higher tolerance for the professor accents (even though I only speak English myself). My purely American, untraveled classmates seem to have a much harder time.
As I understand it, Microsoft isn't going to follow this standard. If Microsoft isn't going to follow this standard, then it is useless for OpenOffice, NeoOffice, KOffice, etc. to follow this standard. Or is this going to be for Office 2k10 or something?
I don't think anyone was calling FAKE and claiming that it was CGI, so yes... it is real. More seriously though, I think they are saying dog just because of the conotations it brings, its movements don't seem very dog like to me, they match that of some other four-legged mammals more closely I think.
We darn well aren't. This is a fair bug, which was found out, and deserves to be fixed by someone who understands it. There should be no nitpicking, except to come to conclusion on how much of current systems are affected.
I'm browsing at a high point level, but I see a lot more people defending SP1 than people dissing it. In fact, don't think I've read any serious disses, just humor. What's with the apparent sense of insecurity?
I think that's pretty optimistic. I wouldn't assume that 99% of people at RedHat or Canonical had their "heart's in the right place". What makes you assume that of Microsoft?
Seems like he would be a prime candidate for ascension. I can't say I read his books, but the television series he hosted was very informative. His and shows like "Beyond 2000" have yet to be replaced.
All those things I think are really weak arguments. I don't encourage any one to like|love|adore any company. But as far as reasons go to dislike a company, these are pretty weak ones -- for me at least.
Issue 1 : Google follows local law. It concerns me a lot more when companies think they are above local law.
Issue 2 and Issue 3: people make (and have) too much personal data available online (as far as I know Google is mining private DBs and making that data available). I am far more worried about the fact that advertisers seem to get my new addresses as soon as I connect up utilities.
Issue 4: Google screwed me on Adwords too.. which reminds me I need to remove it from my site... done! (thanks for reminding me to do that). I never got a dime from years of having their ads on my site. Adsense/Adwords is poorly managed. I suggest people drop their accounts if they don't like it. I don't hate them because of it, I strongly dislike and will not use their Adwords/Adsense service.

Some people do in fact code (open source or closed source) purely for charity.

Or the artists won't be able to have gold cutlery in their private jets (/me remembers south park episode)

I wish I knew what you're talking about. No one is talking about more ads, or a new class of ads.
For those who haven't noticed, they have a different background colour, and are tagged "Sponsored Link" at the top of the container.
America (the USA to be specific) abuses human rights too.
RIAA, MPAA, Microsoft... seems to work out very well, just apparently a bit difficult to get into.
I'm guessing the Fedora and upstream got a large amount of the bugs out, so Ubuntu is ready to use it.
I'd be curious to see a digitized copy of his notes
I think that's the clearest assessment on the matter I've come across so far. But alas, I lack mod points.
You'd be guilt of trespassing then wouldn't you?
The Soprano family seemed pretty human to me. Aside from the greed factor, I don't see that much humanity seeping from the RIAA.

Sucks that you can't read the article and assess the level of the bias he displays for yourself.
Patience my friend, all in good time. The power of the corporation will devour all

Disable pango, see if that helps.
