First allow me to say that I would *love* some form of rail transit. Where I live in Indianapolis is on the complete opposite side of town from most IT work, and it would be great to not have to maintain a car just for the "privilege" of driving to and from work every day. I'm not 100% certain that this initiative is going to do anything to alleviate that pain, but, for the sake of argument, I'll assume it is.

What scares me, though, is that this is going to end up being a big mess. Even if it does attempt to address the needs of, say, 50% of all people, I'm wary this will turn into some complete money sinkhole. I hope that, in the end, we don't end up with an overbudget, overdue, and mostly working system that far less people end up using than expected.

I agree with what you say. The ads on Hulu really don't bother me. They are almost all under 30 seconds (with that latest Fedex one being around 8 seconds) and none are very annoying or intrusive. And, as you say, I want online TV to succeed.

The problem is, though, if this is truly successful, won't we start seeing longer, more obnoxious commercial spans in Hulu? At that point, it becomes just as bothersome as watching the show on broadcast TV. Also, how do you account for local advertising?

I built two MythTV boxes, bought some cheap Pinnacle USB HDTV Sticks (800se, they were $29.99 on buy.com), and we should be getting rid of AT&T services in the next few weeks.

Apart from a few annoyances with setup (getting dvb drivers working with these HDTV sticks, antenna issues) things are going very well thus far.

Where do you store your external drives? If it's your personal items you're referring to, you probably keep them in the same house as your computer. Not much of a backup in the event of a fire/tornado/flood/etc. If it's for a business, unless you have offices in multiple locations, you probably keep them in the same office. So now if someone breaks your office's physical security, they have access to your backups as well.

I understand where you're coming from; it's difficult trusting someone to not abuse your privacy or hold your documents captive. I use online storage to back up things that have no "privacy" value per se. I typically just put out backups of my family photos and such.

I mostly agree with you. For the reference, I'm the father of four children. :)

First, allow me to say that I also know lots of parents personally. Those parents that I know also are into making sure their children get education prior to being in school. I would also say that my family and my friends' families fall into the "middle-class middle-american" description. We live in Indianapolis, FWIW.

The problem is that, in a class of 30 students, my kids and my friends' kids will make up something like 10%-20% of the class at best. This means that they will enter the K-12 environment and immediately be ahead of the others. That 80% will get the attention (gotta prop up those scores!), and, thanks to their parents' apathy, probably won't excel in class anyway because their parents just want them out of their hair and into free baby^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H school.

I'm not just pulling this out of thin air, either. Many of our friends are teachers at local schools. One of them is a teacher at what is supposedly the best school in the district, and even she says this is how things are on a day-to-day basis. I realize that isn't necessarily a national trend, but that's how things are here. It's a very scary reality.

And yes, it is a large part of why we are very heavily considering homeschool after this summer.

  21. Re:Universities~=Corporate america on IT Students Contract Out Coursework To India · · Score: 4, Insightful

And so the dominoes continue to fall. Look even more closely at K-12 public schools. You want to talk about "simply dish out information and the students memorize?" That's what the typical K-12 education is right there. This is part of the problem with standardized tests at this phase in a student's life. In K-12, you should be taught how to think and problem solve as the basis for later in your education. Instead, we consider it progress if they know when the war of 1812 was fought. After all, getting answers "right" improves standardized test scores. Knowing why it was fought, its ramifications, and what we need to learn from it doesn't do anything to bring more $$$ into the school system.

Then you can go even farther back and look at how parents don't teach their kids anything until they get to school (after all, it's the school's job!) and the problem just keeps getting worse.

America has become a society where education just isn't valued. I could go on and on...

I don't think Bell Canada's customers are just chomping at the bit to get more traffic shaping on their lines, and I don't think they'd be any happier about it with a competitor, even if the prices were lower.

About the only logical application I can see of "competitive reasons" would be, "Oh no! Now our customers know we actually *were* screwing them hard, and now they're leaving for our competitors in droves!"
