I suppose that it could raise it's head above water to breath in the same way that a whale comes to the surface to breath but the skeleton indicates that the head was habitually pointing downwards. All paleontology is a matter of guesswork but an air breather who's head is habitually pointing downwards is probably land based - don't take my word for it - RTFA.
I thought that as well, especialy when the lightweight skeleton is taken into consideration (less strength needed when the bulk is water bourne) but if you read this article linked from TFA it makes it quite clear that the current thinking is that it was a land animal. In addition a downward facing mouth doesn't do too well for a swamp dweller - how's it going to breath?
Fair point - I'd mod you informative if I could - but like many (most)/.ers I dont read TFA but rush in to try and get the jokes in before someone else does. At lease it wasn't in Soviet Russia.
It's a matter of volume - like spam - if you have millions of people seeing the online adds then you don't need a very high hit rate to make them (very) profitable. After all, how many people do you know who have bought Viagra from a spam add, and yet they must work or they wouldn't exist.
$10 per month seems a little excessive to me. In fact this looks more like a cash in than a 'let's get a new generation interested'. The only people willing to pay that sort of cash are Baby Boomers reliving their childhoods.
As smoking declines the costs to the NHS of treating all the smoking related deseases declines and there is a net gain. For example the drop in heart related desease in Scotland since the smoking ban has been very dramatic, I was quoted 20% by a health care worker.
The UK does not have the puritan heart that the US has. We Brits would never consider prohibition for example. As such a proposed ban on internet gambling would not have the grass roots support it does in the States and no politician is going to risk my vote, and plenty of others, by banning internet gambling.
But I agree, there are plenty of stealth taxes imposed by politicians of all shades.
2 years and $25k! FFS! Is it me or is that totally over the top. I'm glad I live in the UK where I can enjoy online poker without risking the sort of punishment meeted out for serious crime.
Thanks for that icebrain. I always thought it brought home just how close to the edge they were living and it's good to get it confirmed that it's true.
Or a piece of paper taped over it Apollo 13 style - my all time favourite protective cover. I often wonder whether that actually happened or whether it was artistic license.
But the 'Wally World' laptops don't come with a nice warm inner glow of having helped lift some third world child out of information poverty (and you don't get $200 per tax deductable as a charitable contribution)
The issue, as I understand it, is that at a power station polution can be controlled and, where posible, reduced. Your car, on the other hand, pumps out vast quantities of polutants right in the middle of population centres (well, if you commute into town it does).
I don't know about anywhere else but, here in the UK, I've found it to be very effective. Before I registered I was getting 2-3 calls a night, now I get none, yep, none at all.
we need to do a better job of educating users Who's this 'we' who needs to do a better job of educating users? If you're saying that Computer Studies in school should concentrate far more on issues like this then I agree but the vast majority of users have left school and how exactly are 'we' or whomever, going to educate them.
It's exactly the same with malware protection, far too many users don't understand the risks in opening e-mail attachments or downloading 'free' wallpaper but there's no way to teach them, nor, in a non-totalitarian society, should there be. It's the price you pay for freedom - the freedom of illeducated users to operate computers.
man who went to the back of his RV while still on the highway to have some coffee, when he crashed, he sued the company for not stating in the manual that "the car does not turn by itself" Er... no. Check your Urban legends first
Most of the over 50's I know - and that's quite a few as I'm 54 - are still drinking and smoking just as much as we used to in our undergrad days. I'd strongly disagree with the very ageist statment that my mind is 'superior' to a younger person's - Ok, I've been rund the block a few more times and have a better degree from the 'University of Life' but superior - I wouldn't be that smug. Maybe this is why I don't buy the Torygraph.
Then we'd need to make sure that their printers are going to work all right. And I'd probably need to teach them how to use new software for printing photos. The more I think about it, as much as I hate to say it, the less I think it would work. As someone who got Vista with a new PC I can assure you these problems are not limited to *nix.
We all spent a lot of time fixing things - and earning a small fortune - but the computer press, and a lot of the popular press, was full of stories about how planes would fall from the sky, autotellers would stop working, and life as we know it would self destruct. I work for a major UK financial institution and I was very much part of the Y2K effort and, after all the man hours, what did we find, one or two minor inconveniences. Still I took my wife to the Canary Islands for a holiday on the money I earnt staying sober on new years eve.
From TFA
Still, the power of Storm, also known as Peacomm, is still hotly debated. Earlier this week another expert said the worm had pretty much run its course and was subsiding. I have a seaking suspicion that all the Storm Worm doomsayers are out to sell us their solution. This has echoes reminiscent of the Y2K fiasco.
Perhaps it would be better to have a number of small robots each focusing on a different task. That's exactly what we've already got. Take my microwave oven - you put in raw potatoes and tell it you want them baked and it does the rest. Ok, it doesn't look much like Robbie but it's doing one specific job really well. And once you look under the bonnet (hood to those in the US) of my car...
I'd like to propose a scientific term for the first individual of a new species that comes into being It's nothing like as simple as that. For one species to diverge into two it requires a significant period of geographical isolation of two groups of individuals so that, when they two groups next meet, they have genetically diverged and interbreeding is impossible. To repeat - it isn't that one individual suddenly becomes 'different'- it's that two populations diverge.
Technically you could take individuals from the two dirverging populations at regular intervals - say every five generations or so - until you get to the point where interbreeding stops but even tne your Adamic individual is meaningless.

It's a quote from somewhere - and it's the common usage in the English speaking world. We tend to misuse your language even more than you missuse ours

it won't be long until a couple of insert third word currency of choice will equal $399 and the deal will be reversed.
