Even if you are "software guy", I'd suggest building your own instead of buying Alienware. Why? Well, instead of paying a premium for a brand name, you can put that money into the parts. $2000 might buy you a nice PC from them, but $2000 spent on parts for your own computer? You'd get a screaming fast machine, and putting it together isn't much harder than playing with Lego.
They are required to give you the source the same way that they give you the binaries. For example, since apt-get can grab GPL'd binaries, it must also grab GPL'd sources.
Anyone who has a binary version of this software, if it is under the GPL, is entitled to the source code, and all the rights inherent in the GPL.
... but what about GNU/Linux's use in the military? For example, a member of the Los Angelas LUG resigned over the use of Linux in the military.
Do we really want the government using open source? We really dont want to limit it, because that would be a limit on the freedom, but do we want it being used for evil? Perplexing!
Why is this important? Sony had, until recently, said that it would release the PS3 in 2006. Microsoft thought it would be able to get its NeXtbox or whatever it is now out by Fall 2005, and laugh at Sony. Unfortunately for them, they're now screwed. Sure, Sony might not have the support of all developers if they launch it by the end of the year, or in March, but PS2 didn't, and its backwards compatibility kept it selling for quite a while. Xbox2? "Sorry, no backwards compatibility! We were working on it but we had to rush it out the door to compete with Sony!"
Computer Scientists love ed, not just because it comes first alphabetically, but because it's the standard. Everyone else loves ed because it's ED!
"Ed is the standard text editor."
And ed doesn't waste space on my Timex Sinclair. Just look:
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24 Oct 29 1929/bin/ed - -rwxr-xr-t 4 root 1310720 Jan 1 1970/usr/ucb/vi - -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 5.89824e37 Oct 22 1990/usr/bin/emacs
Of course, on the system *I* administrate, vi is symlinked to ed. Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K; and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!!
"Ed is the standard text editor."
Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed:
golem> ed ? help ? ? ? quit ? exit ? bye ? he llo? ? eat flaming death ? ^C ? ^C ? ^D ?
- --- Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm the novice with verbosity.

ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!
When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!! Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!
TEXT EDITOR.
When IBM, in its ever-present omnipotence, needed to base their "edlin" on a UNIX standard, did they mimic vi? No. Emacs? Surely you jest. They chose the most karmic editor of all. The standard.
Ed is for those who can *remember* what they are working on. If you are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE SO-CALLED "VISUAL" EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!!

There's tons of The Smashing Pumpkins stuff that Billy (lead singer) got people to release. Some major stuff, like a 5 disc set of B-sides (Mashed Potatoes).
Most of this stuff here was made by Billy himself, and given to an online fan with the message to "circulate this". He's a pretty cool guy, and he's going to be releasing a new album.
Exactly, how many people can actually _afford_ photoshops fancy features? Last time I checked, the lastest version was *$1000CAD*, which is as much as I'll be paying to build an entire new computer (without the cost of a monitor)
I was on a Mac, which I just sold today, because I simply dont feel right about stealing software. Yes, software was meant to be Free, but not if the author didn't want that. So while Adobe charges thousands of dollers for their products, and your average windoze/mac user pirates it, I'll take the moral high ground and learn how to use the gimp for my (admittedly limited) image editing needs.
I dont read them anymore, as I'm not a Maccie, but they did give the *incredible tip* that you could make your music library smaller by converting everything to AAC! Wow! you mean 128kbps on AAC sounds like 160 on MP3? how can I lose?!
Of course, now I know that mp3 and aac throw away different parts of the sound wave, so now I have crappy sounding *and* incompatible songs. Thanks for the tip!
"I don't want to overdramatize this, but it's hard not to feel targeted when there's a game where you shoot at Quebeckers," said Jean Dorion, head of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal.
Personally, I could care less, but if someone made about killing people that could be identified with me, I'd be disturbed to. However, we cant let anything stand in the way of free speech, even things that may upset or disturb some people. Throw away the leaflet, dont buy the game, close the book, whatever, its your choice.
"I actually believe that OS zealotry is doing a disservice to our community, because if you force somebody into something against his will, you run the risk of creating negative experiences. And, ultimately, what matters is not the OS you use, but what you give to the world, you are not interviewing me because I use Linux;-)"
Finally, I'm sick of the whole "FreeBSD is dying!" "Microsoft kills babies!" "Linux is stoled code!" "Haiku is actually a freeform poem!" stuff. Just use whatever you want... ok?
As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier! While new users might be confused (I dont even have my new computer yet, and I've already downloaded 4 varieties of GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and now I'm getting Debian...), they'll find that they want in a distro if they just look long enough. What needs to quit is this "haha, that gentoo zealot would reply, but he's too busy compiling his response!" or "FreeBSDZ R DYING!". I know that *BSD has little to do with GNU/Linux, but its still Free Software, and we have common goals.

Which is why google doesn't show much lynx action from me, some BAD HTTP REQUEST deal. :(

Nope, the new PS3 launch date of March 2005 is *before* E3, or even by the end of this year!
Why is this important? Sony had, until recently, said that it would release the PS3 in 2006. No, he means people who run everything in CLI using emacs.
:P
Did you ever think of the graphically challenged? I didn't think so.
Wow, it actually exists? I got it from here No, I dont mean to plagiarize... why would I take credit for using Ed? I'm not some sorta sadist... :(

Helpful tip: If you have a dead iPod, do the rebate offer, and sell the Jukebox on eBay.
Why, thats dishonest!
PS: Anyone have a dead iPod they want to send to me?
Sex toys, explicit cartoons, and slashdot!?
What kind of _PERVERTED GEEK_ are you trying to raise!?

I mean, how could you guys react to some game where you had to fight against (or play as) some Quebecois terrorist group?
Its already happened.

There was a story on NewsForge about the Splintering Linux Community.
